Is Mac or Windows a better choice?

the problem with macs is.....they're macs

:D

Houston, we have a problem.

Mac does not hang as compared to Windows system where it can get kind of frustrating.
Even when running big psd files, it does not hang in your face as compared to Windows where u feel like smashing the screen

MS office seems to run better in Windows. Seem faster.

Between Aperture and Adobe Lightroom (Mac and window version), I prefer LR.

For video editing, I prefer Windows. Less chances of conflict after video creation.

Remember that if you;re in SG, there's a SITEX coming along. so you can look see look see and then decide again. ;)

I chose Mac for this integrated design (system and outlook) as well as its stability (enuf of blue screen of death) and cleaner application setup.

Actually I would not say it will cost you that much lah. Hardware to hardware...it is true the Mac stuff will set you back alittle more but I would not say by twice the amount or anything like that. In fact, things like ram and some other peripherals you can get the upgrades yourself outside. Never take upgrades at a Mac store..you end up paying Apple prices for the same thing you can get at Sim Lim SQ run of the mill shops. heh.. You built your own system so you know lah.

The other things are the original softwares hehe... as you know you have to buy originals...they do tend to cost more the PC versions and if they are exclusive to Mac platform..it can cost even more. That is why I did not upgrade much on my aging mac. heheh...

When you go on holiday...why are you even thinking of editing your photos!!!??? Wait till you get back!... I use to just download them to my ipod or my notebook and then come home to Singapore to do anything to the photos... where got time to waste oversea to do that nonsense in my hotel room....so neither should you. hehe you are just making up reason to own a MAC!!!! hehehe... As I say...nothing wrong with getting a Mac. It is a good computer but really... you wanna be a true Mac user or a fan boy? Please be the former. I beg you. heheh...

Hi sammy888

Your replies are always insightful and balanced. I have a iPod Touch - I can download photos from my D700 to it? I received 6 iPod Touch (8GB i think) from clients as gifts. I don't use them so my wife took all of them for her own use and lend to her family so I do not have much chance to play with it. If I can connect it directly to my camera, I think it's time to "recall" my iPod Touches.:bsmilie:

I saw ads on Kojinsha UMPCs. Looking at the specs, they seem rather portable, light and functional too. You've any experience with them?

There are currently no compatible camera connector for the iPod Touch, as far as I know.

I hope some company comes up with one because it's going to be so useful. I've an iPod Touch as well.

Of course Windows.
Reason is the software.
Plentiful and relatively cheap. Even a lot of it is freeware.

What is the PC if not for the software? Only a box.

6 iPod Touch~!!!!!!! Damn!. heheh... I wish I have clients like that! I thought it was a typo you typed! heheheh

Alas Parka is right, apple seem to have abandon the "next generation" interface for their present line of iPods unlike before. The one and only version they did which I bought for my now old but going strong iPod Photo was in a way useful abeit it was a real slow coach at saving all my photos from my DSLR. But at least I can jack it in and let it do it's thing when I get back to my hotel and then come back from dinner and it is all done. This was at a time when memory cards were at prices that can curl your toes. I recalled back then a 1gig was about $350!!! Buying 2 pieces at one time when I first got my D70 was a real painful experience when you consider it cost about a 1/4 of my DLSR!!! heheh

Kojinsha UMPCs?? I read abit about it last year. Now you talking about something I have a weakness for heheh. Ultra Mobile computers heheh.. My fav being the Sony UX series heheh. The first one was out in 2006 and it was awesome looking. If anyone comes close to making really cool looking packaging design to Apple, Sony will be it. I love their UX and TX (with the real carbon fibre screen lid...*drool*)

Not to put a dent for the Apple folks but flash base HDD is not exclusive to the Mac Air. Sony UX, Kojinsha and a few others have got into the game in 2007. It is. I think the next wave for all notebooks (maybe med top high end) as it does cut down on the weight and power consumption in ultra lights.

Getting back to the Kojinsha.... the UMPC is again a niche market. If you are getting one, I hope you will be able to get one with XP as I just saw they offer Microsoft vista on them. To be fair, Vista has come a long way in the recent year, with the latest patch it has become a better OS then late last year. Alot of what people claim has some ring of truth to it being problematic...etc but alot of that has gone away six months ago and it has gotten alot more stable to my chagrin as I was tell alot of my friend not to get it. Well that's another story. So why not Vista...well Vista is a bloatware that is very hungry for CPU processing power and it eats RAMs faster then cookie monster could heheh. If you look at the specs of a Kojinsha flagship version and then you study what is the minimum specs required to run Vista...you will know why heheh.

Apart from that. Again..what are you using the UMPC for? For me, I was thinking of getting it not as a PC but as a over priced, glorified vain indulgence of a PDA!!! heheheh. I thought it would be a good successor to my Sony CLIE but with brute power and wow factor hahah.

UMPC are good for light weight application. Not even MS office type of s/w should be used...heavily. Serious photo editing is totally out. Storage wise ...the biggest HDD being 150 gig I think so for travelling and backing up it is great....unless you are a crazy snapper who only shoot RAW and on holiday for a month!. Then there is the keyboard. If you don't have dainty fingers then you will not like typing on it for long. The touch screen would be good for jotting down stuff but it will also not be productive in any sense of the word. Battery life is iffy as it last about 3 hours? There is also the price factor. I am not saying it is a rich man toy. What I meant is...function to price ratio you are really over paying heh.. but when you look at something like this... especially if you saw the Sony UX model.. price is the last thing on your mind. It is really cool but it functions just as good for it's specs. But in my case it is really the rich man portion that got me shrieking to a halt to buy I have no deep pockets...especially when the bossman say no bonus...again. :( Still looking for a new job as an upgrade from that boss virus heheheh...

But for what you can pay for, you can get alot of good stuff for them cramp in that tiny box. Read the specs and try to see where those features will suit your usage to buy it. Bluetooth, wireless, biometeric, touchscreen, s/w application that will not mind being run on a AMD or Intel older chipset with less memory ( I think no more then 1 gig in total with upgrade I think)..etc.

If I had a few thousands to spare with no other use for it, I would get it or the Sony TX at least. But that is just me. heheh.

Check out this concept design by Fujitsu. Is that not pretty or wat!!! And Fujitsu makes some pretty good small notebooks too. True, PC packaging design still have some way to get there. Problem is whether the bosses are willing to take a gamble on it like what Apple does. Thinking of a computer as more then just a functioning grey box.

By the way...I can't speak for all PC users but for me... I have not seen the Window Blue screen of death in like 2 yrs. What's up with that? If you setup your system properly, get the updates..not jsut for windows but for all the other s/ws you installed and practice proper usage,it hardly flash you the blue screen. A lot of times when it happens it was not windows that casued it but something from the game company's own coding, adobe that screw it for me ...etc. I am not a PC fan boy but I am telling it like it is. I have problem with my Macs too and just like the PC at times I feel like throwing it against the wall when it screws up at the worst possible time when it shouldn't. I treat my PC this way, if it is not failing...I am not pushing it or myself hard enough using it!

One thing about the 2 new Kohjinsha models is that, in my opinion, their screens, while larger, seem inferior in quality to the older ones which had much wider viewing angles... and they are glossy, and unlike sammy888, I prefer matt screens ;p:D
wait till you come to my school or any polytechnic / uni, u will see a lot of Mac users!
one prob with the Win laptops on offer, at least in NUS, is that their specs are not as attractive for higher end stuff as the Mac... who knows, even I might buy a MBP just so I can run Win, glossy screen or not... ;p
