Is it true that SLR/DSLR users dun use full auto mode?

Do you use the full auto mode in your SLR/DSLR?

Take a look at the newbies corner. 99% of DSLR buyers tend to be the "oh it makes me look so cooooool" crowd that then ask questions showing they have no concept of exposure.

Having fun with camera mah. Isn't photography a hobby fun and cool to begin with? :dunno:

For such a case with HDR, either the subject will the under exposed or the BG will be over exposed. Normally the camera will expose for the subject or center region, depending on the metering mode. If the PG wants a silhouette effect, then the camera would likely to have got it totally wrong in full auto.

For subject with backlight, if I want the subject properly exposed, most likely I'll pop the flash and shoot in M mode with Max aperture and reasonable shutter speed (A seasoned PG would more or less have a feel of what shutter speed to use. May not be spot on, but the picture is likely to be salvageable via PP) or Av with evaluative metering. If the camera decide for itself in full auto, it might use a small aperture to get everything in within the DoF and use a slower shutter speed resulting in blurred subject and blown background. But then, different thing work for different pple, so some may prefer to do it other ways that works for them.

Normally, at the site, I'll start with a few test shot, find a reasonable exposure parameter, set to M and keep the setting if the lighting condition doesn't change much. If any situation arises, just point and shoot. It is faster then taking the second shot with adjusted parameter if the camera get it wrong the first time.

If the lighting condition changes rapidly, I'll prefer to use M also as leaving it to the camera might result in properly exposed but blurred picture due to slow shutter, and I prefer to get a sharp but under exposed picture.

Whatever the case, it depends on what the PG wants. Different setting works for different pple.

subject with a strong backlight.

lets see how fast u need to get it right from the moment u decide to shoot.

trust me, my little green window usually beats me.

well, i didn't know the AF point is part of the parameters,
thought this is an exercise on the metering mode.
but i'll hv to say, if the cams i own (40D, 5D & 5DII) has cross type throughout the points,
i'd trust it to the green window all the time.

Not quite true as it depends on the DSLR. Nikon's professional bodies have since the F4 have used Matrix metering where the entire image is read and evaluated. With the F4 (film camera) it was a 25 segment grayscale system and with the F5 this was increased to 1005 segments meting in full colour (RGB). Other metering modes used include spot and center-weighted all of which are selectable as required. The Nikon professional DSLR's (D1x, D2X, D3, D3X and the DxH series all use upgraded metering systems based on the F5.

On the F5 and all Nikon professional DSLR's the center weighted metering spot can be user adjusted in size.

I think a lot of aspiring professional wannabes are wishing for a "W" mode. "Wedding" mode. :bsmilie:

And another thread that goes "To Auto or Not To Auto"

Anyway, to tar all (D)SLR users with the same brush isn't really a fair comparison. There are times where full manual control is needed, there are times where speed is of the essence and a full automatic mode is very much appreciated.

Use as it is.

And maybe every photographer (enthusiast or professional) will remember that the first words out of people's mouth when they see your best work would be, "Nice photo!". You don't really hear people saying, "Nice Lens!", "Nice Settings!" or even "Nice Camera!" whenever they see a photo right?

agreed. in my sch i have retards who go asking me what camera shld i buy. i want a dslr tat is easy to use. and to quote them, "i just need press pictures come out can very nice already"

i'll just roll eye and ask say. u wanna buy cause its cool right? cause i look cool while taking right? (damn bhb)

the purpose of dslr is to give u more control over ur camera and wad u can take right? wads the point of going full auto when u can get a pns to do tat?

and wad else. i got jokesters who go after me telling. hey i put auto mode. dun have zoom button.

i wanna strangle them
note i do not refer to the technology such as metering and auto focus. those 2 are life savers.
wad i meant is like. i need fast shutter speed to freeze moments. but my dslr auto mode isnt tat smart to think tat way.
and hence the usual aperture priority. its like driving a semi auto ats al
Well, whatever floats THEIR boat my friends. Why get pissed off and earn another few pops of acne or frown lines? :bsmilie:

Our economy needs some serious adrenaline shot in the arm. Huge domestic spending will give a much needed boost to our economy in the years ahead and when people lose interest, they'll dump their gears for cheap. Now, who's up for some brand new gear that has a shutter count less than 5000 (cos in most newbie cases, the first 3000 shots won't make the cut)? :D

how to convince u that i do leave it to my cam most of the time?

if u r a canon user,
try this scene.

dude, i could do the same in aperture priority or shutter priority.
the only difference i might see? it might just be a simple *oh crap shoot i left it at f2.8* and a quick shift to f8.0 would do the trick.

now my turn to counter offer u a scene. imagine ur at a soccer match. and u wanna freeze a certain moment. or u wanna follow a person's movements (aka those moving subject sharp. background blur due to camera panning)

beat tat ~~

*edit: what i'm trying to say is we all rely on the camera for metering. i think tat is the crux of ur argument. tat ur camera evaluates and meters correctly. wad we meant by auto is we leave the aperture and shutter speed and iso all to the camera. tat is a big difference ~~

well. cause they give me a bad name ~~ i hate being grouped with them.

now ppl see u have dslr? all think u come from rich family like some rich kid and just wanna showoff.

oh please. life is unfair.

and a bad impression is bad for photographers.
tats like being labeled as a construction worker cause ur darker skinned. its quite irritating if u get wad i mean.
(no offence to anyone. i'm jsut raising an example. sorry if it sounded offensive:x)

Actually what I wanna say is, whatever a situation, there will always be variation of results depending on the setting used.

The same scene, there may be properly exposed subject with over-exposed BG, or under exposed subject with properly exposed BG, or both subject & BG is properly exposed ( With D-lighting or whatever technology).. The thing is, does the camera's decision always happens to be what the PG wants?

If one doesn't bother about the outcome, or is quite sure that the camera would do better (or faster), then the auto mode is the way to go.

If I'm shooting something like fireworks, obviously I wouldn't want the camera to up the ISO, open up the aperture and such.

Well, fashion fads die off after a while.

Juveniles can always want a camera, but its how long their interests last. A year? Two? Three the most?

You have 10, 20, 30 years to outlast them 10 times. Time will prove everything anyway. :D Rather than getting angry and whatnots, why not expend that energy on shooting and thinking of your next shot? :D

Interest of boys with cameras faded after few years, another batch of boys with cameras take over. There will always be boys with cameras on Auto mode

thumbs up. anyways. prays hard those idiots get really expensive cameras. as a fellow cser said. "cheap second hand 5dmk2s anyone?"

still haha. photography. i purposely learnt it cause i started since p1, its different and its something i love. now i have idiots coming up to me telling me their photo blur, just to realise they on manual focus and dunno how to focus ~~ kinda sucks lol.

anyways back to topic, agreed. camera dunno wad u want. i'll take semi auto with a aperture priority than take my chances with a full auto.

These are the patriotic folks that drive our economy and domestic spending which in a way, isn't such a bad idea after all.

Being all the control freaks we are, I think its always better to have an element of control rather than to let that chip take full control and let that computer decide what YOU want right? :D

I goto work everyday, getting controlled and ordered by bosses. The last thing I'd want in my spare time and hobby is to have a computer controlling what I ought to shoot instead of what I WANT to shoot. ;p

(y)

u get a single lense reflex for wad?

one: its a single,

2: its a lense

3: its a reflex.

aka u wanna see wad u shoot at that moment. why u want taht? cause u want moe control. u dun wanna peek through cheapo viewfinders or lcd screens.

means: u dun wanna be a nooblet running ike a headless chicken going on full auto ~~

aperture priority ok. manual ok. auto?

get a pns :D

oh man. i keep on forgetting the correct spelling

lens= 1 piece of glass
lenses= man pieces of glass~~

SORY BROS

1) It's a LENS, not a @!#@! Lense. Back to a kodak instamatic for you

Don't worry, they added lense to a dictionary. I suspect that so many people misspell it that they just added it so it would be easier. :bsmilie:

Remember also that some people here think lens is plural.

Yeah but it's only found as a varient in the Mirriam Webster book of American Horrors.

It's not listed in the definitive Oxford or Collins dictionaries.
