what you mean is,if you bring your gear out at least once a week, and into direct strong sunlight, then it'll be fine, cause the direct sunlight will kill the spores. BUT if you leave your camera/lens in your camera bag at home for months without using it, fungus will probably start growing. so it depends on your level of usage.

Me, put an xtra hydrometer in the dry cabinet, got it from the dry box that comes free with Digicabi...;p
The answer is a resounding 'YES'.
I've got an old fav. lens which is now an expensive paperweight. It serves to remind me of my 6 months of laziness and procrastination from buying a proper drybox. Remember...mould grows once it starts to 'inhabit' your lens. Don't take any chances.
Getting a Drybox with an RH meter is good cos you do not want to make it too dry too, else it dries and cracks the seals and affect the gears in the lenses.
Also...Hungry Hippo is out of the question cos when it has finish 'sucking' the moisture....it turns into a small pool of water. Imagine this in your Dry Box! :bigeyes: Besides....honestly the only thing Hungry Hippo is hungry for is your $$$ cos its not cheap.

I can use my setup often and even sun them, but i would still get a dry cabinet.
Doesn't take up a huge fraction of your setup cost in the long run. But certainly gives you more insurance on the items you treasure.

but yeah, they do cost more. if u got about 100 bucks to spare why not get a digicabi, its a nice piece of furniture too!;p

Yes you should definitely invest in a dry cabinet (electronic). I googled on this a couple of years back. There was a research done on electricity bills versus the cost of buying the silica gels and also the constant heating and frying of the gel.
End up, electricity bills is still way cheaper than the cost of silica gel.
Just take the initial $100+ dollars for the cabinet as a permanent investment.

but what if the camera stays in the bag that will be used?
I mean most newbies (MOST) will only have one lens first. can we start off by just keeping it in the bag? (buy 1 thing at a time..camera so ex liao must save up again first:bsmilie: )

that could be even worse. if the strap is wet with pesperation or there is a little bit of moisture in the bag, it'll increase the rate of fungal growth. Some people say put silica gel in the bag. Thats pointless cause the bag is not airtight so diffusion will occur anyway and the humidity in the bag will be the same as the atmosphere arnd it.
any answer to the strap thing?
do we need to remove it before placing the body in the try box? quite cumbersome...

unless its very wet with perspiration, no. there is no set answer, if you happy you take off, not happy don't take off.
No need unless your strap is soaking wet (either with sweat or rain/snow).
If its wet, let it dry before putting it into the dry cabinet. Else, just put everything in, the dehumidifier will take care of it.

buy one thing at a time is right.
so, buy the dry cabi first before buying your camera.
cus, since the money is so tight, means the camera is a major investment for u. makes sense to ensure it has a long fruitful life.
say, u wan to buy arowana, sure must get tank set up, water stabilise first, then take your precious fish home.
imagine, buy fish liao, put in pail.
then go look for money buy fish tank and filter.
