Is dry cabinet a must?

You are right to ask such stuff to be placed into the fridge as the drycab is still to wet and the scallops will breakdown if not moldy. There is a distinct different between decomposition and lens fungus.:bsmilie:

the scallops are sun dried already. Not much moisture but still smells.

Pardon my innocence.

i bought an eos 50d and 15-85mm lens.
My colleague told me to get a dry cabinet.
my questions are:

how important to get one? is it really a must for all DSLR owners?
is the canon bag not enough?

for me the answer is yes... u dont want to ruin ur investments. the camera may get fungus..
yeah, try to put ur investments in dry cabinet, its not so ex ( around 100++)
if ur camera has fungus, the service for cleaning the fungus is around 400..

It is s a small price to pay compared to money you have paid for your equipment.

Fungus will definitely grow on your lens, flash covers, etc., unless you are using your equipment everyday. Otherwise in the humidity of Singapore, within a few months you will see something growing, especially so for those equipment that you do not use frequently.

BTW, dry cabinet seems to last for very long. I have mine for over 10 years, still working.

I only have one DSLR camera + one digital camera, i do not need a big one( i suppose).

Time being before I get a dry cabinet, Given that my room enter sunlight( but not strong ray), which is better option(s)?

1) Camera inside camera bag, put inside a wooden wardrobe?
2) Camera out of camera bag , and place it inside my wooden wardrobe?
2) Camera out of bag and Put inside a translucant plastic container with lit closed.
3) Camera in camera bag, just put on table or something, since mild sunlight-(as I define it as ray coming in, but my skin will not feel the warmness).

Or if u are 1 rich guy, let the lens grow fungus lor nvm, juz bring down for servicing

They do the same job, but Dry boxes require a substance to be placed inside called Silica Gel, these substances last for around a week or so and needs to be warmed up in the microwave to reuse. But be aware that during the process of warming up, an odourless-colourless cancerous gas will be produced that it will be poisonous for your family in the long run.

Dry cabinets, they run on electricity @ 5W, there won't be any drastic change in your electricity bills. The cabinets come in either Analog or Digital. Digital gives a more accurate reading unlike the analog which gives a +/-6%. You can also control the humidity level in dry cabinets unlike dry boxes.

If you mean are they for the same purpose? Then yes, they are used to prevent fungal growth. If you are asking if they work the same way? Then no, one uses a dehumidifier, and the other one uses less reliable drying agents be it silica gel or thirsty hippo and you have to constantly monitor the humidity.

I have been reading, IIRC, the HR% shall set to around 40-45%. After knowing that there is a +-6% in accuracy,

1) What HR% is more ideal for my case? ( It's placed inside non-air con room).

2) Since I have lots of space left after puting my camera, is it really okay that I put in other stuffs eg cables/USB cables, lens cleaning kits, DSLR batteries and even my 8G memory card. (Instructions did not state all those, pls enlighten me).
Considering putting so many things inside, we do take things out/in, will it eventually make the HR% level always in a very "unstable/not appropriate" range?

You are using your dry cabinet as a general storage cabinet. :sweat:

40-45 is ok. Not too low as you may dry out the rubber and/or lubricant.

As for storage of the other equipement, it's up to you, but not necessary. Only Lens and Camera(s) need to be stored inside.

I have the DB-036 and setup, sometime the reading can go as high as 45 and low as 38. Not sure what's affecting it also.

Btw, do where in the house you all usually keep it? Under the table?
