may i know wat is grey set mean?

i heard tat alan is offering 700 d40 kits but not sure with other freebies... i'm going to get d40 too...

by the way, jsut get update from my friend, he saw d40x only sell at 740 somewhere in tiong bahru.... anyone can confirm this price?

grey set is without local warranty.

anyway, D40 is the best cheap digicam for beginners. if there's any "prob" with the D40, it's the need to MF with the brilliant 50/1.8.

'Grey set' is aka 'parallel import'.

YOu will need to be aware of Nikon's warranty policies.

D40 is always a good buy, I have one myself and my wife love it for it size. (much smaller than the D200 or D300). Get a used one for best value.

if u are getting a new kit, get the D60... it is 2 years ahead and in the digital world, that is like light-years.

if u want good price and have friends traveling to HK... here is a price list for ur review.

with the currently low USD. it is a good time to shop in HK. (HKD is peg to USD):)

So should i get a D40 or D60 ? "AF-S VR 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G" - what the "VR f3.5-5.6G" means? what must i get after i brought the body of the cam?

VR = Vibration Reduction.
f3.5-5.6 means aperture f3.5 at shortest focal length, and f5.6 at longest focal length.
G means lens has no aperture ring. Aperture is set by the camera body.

hope that helps.

then how about lens with DX, ED, ED II, etc...
so many types of lens (18-55mm)... which 1 is better in term of price/performace?

The stock lens is pretty good... 18-55mm 3 X zoom:thumbsup:

the reason to as why this new vr kit lens is good is due to the vr.
vr is a cheaper alternative to f2.8 in low light conditions.
helps to push the shutter faster by at least 1 or 2 f stops in night time hand held shots.

how about the other lens? for example this d40 kits len..

anyone can briefly explain 18-55mm (other other ranges) with lens with different 'model' DX, ED, ED II, etc.

A better explanation here.

hmm.. after reading thru the kenrockwell webbie and these posts..
i agree with most of the CS forummers that the newer cams have so much function that beginners dun even noe hw to use..
i did use a canon 400D for a period of time.. didnt really maximise its functions

being an amateur... i have more or less decided on the d40- or d60.
but i cant dec bet the both..
1) will the "metering" prob of the d40, be easier to overcome with the d60?
2) theres abit of talk abt "ais" n "ai" something.. dont really understd this part, would that affect wat type of lense i can get in future?

Quite a number of these Canon SLR spotted and "captured" by my Nikon in Sungei Road, Theives Market. Nikons not found.

Glad I bought a Nikon. Enough said. Hehehe...

Hi, is the current Nikon Sale for D40 @ $1188, with those "freebies" a good buy?
Or buy them seperately is cheaper....

Some bros here, bought their D40 @ $749, is it just one 18-55 lens without any freebies?
And anyone knows the price for D40x with stock lens?

Thanks :)

yes with kit lens. very good cam for beginners!

Bought a set last night at $749 from Challenger. The kit comes with the AF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G II lens, two 2GB SD cards, a screen protector, table-top tripod, camera bag and lens cleaning kit. Quite a good deal. You also have the option of buying the 55-200 lens at $400+, which will make it roughly the same price at the advertised $1188 at other places.

Personally, the reason I prefer the 40 over the 40x is because the flash-sync is 1/500 for D40 but only 1/200 for D40x. This is important as I do a lot of shooting outdoors.

Hope this helps.

Now undecided which to get.....
The standard one at $749 or,
the one on Nikon Sale, with one more VR 55-200mm lens?

Is VR 55-200mm a good lens to start, or another lens is better to match with the $749 package?

Thanks ;)

u have to see whether u need the range or not.. and if u need the range.. do u like to change lens everytime.. if not the 18- 200 VR2 is quite a good lens..

Hi, finally bought the $749 standard pack @ Challenger. But the mini tripod, see oso want to laugh, dun think can support DSLR camera.... :(
But saleman always bullshit, said the AF-S 18-55mm dun have AF, kept asking me to get AF-S 55-200mm then have AF.
Luckily i learnt a little from this forum before shopping, Cheers ClubSnap's kakis for sharing infos.... :)

Wth... Is it possible to lodge a complaint? I get incensed whenever I heard stories about dishonest salespeople.

Anyway enjoy using your new camera! The 18-55 is a great lens to start with. Just stick with it and try not to look at too many lens review sites/forums that try to poison you with bbb virus. :bsmilie:
