Is d40 still a good buy?

Wow, price dropped about $100-$150 since I got mine in Oct last year.

It has served my needs well, especially for travelling.
I think even if I get a D300, I may keep this as a backup/travel body.

actually, how long will the d40 stock last? i'm now waitin for enlistment (3 - 4 weeks time) plannin to save up when servin NS.. haha..
i find that canon bodies are too ex.. oh yea i went to ms color to try d60 be4.. it felt good.. the d40 & d60 share the same housing rite?

I dunno how much NS has changed, but from my experience, I will rather spend time sleeping, pig-out, checking out the female personnel. Photography was very far down the list of my priorities. A lot of your time is not yours, what's left is probably better spent doing with family and friends because they miss you so much. Or to stop them from nagging. IMHO, a point and shoot is best for NS days.

I suggest you put your purchase on hold until u get a taste of what your NS is going to be about. If you gonna be a cook, clerk or storeman or any other vocation with lots of time on hand, then you buy your DSLR. If you gonna be running around with your FBO/SBO/backpack a lot, I suggest you keep saving the money for the DSLR, keep reading the forum but delay your purchase until nearer the end of your fulltime service. You will probably have a bigger budget and be able to buy a better DSLR 2 years or so down the road. What's important is that at that time you can spend quality time with your DSLR rather than envisioning the great time your will have with a D40 while doing your 5th pull-up before you are allowed to have lunch....

Almost all military bases will not allow camera phones, less so a DSLR. Where are u going to keep your DSLR? At home? what good is a DSLR at home when you are in camp?
my 2 cents

haha yea yea i tot of the factors before.. cuz the d40 is too good to be missed thats why i wanted to rush as it is being discontinued already.. and also i will be buyin the lens much later.. however after readin your thoughts, i think i will just save all the money and one shot buy a better setup near ord. LOL. but i really hope to be assigned a task thats 8-5 after posted to unit..

oh yea thats dat shop! alot of old slrs inside there.. now i know what they do. haha! thx;)

I second that. During NS, all I wanted to do really, after booking out, is head home and sleep! What little time I had left after resting is spent with friends. Very little time to pursue on hobbies unless you're pes C and below, posted to a really lobo vocation.

It might be good, but there'll always be better. If it's discontinued by then, you'll probably be able to get a 2nd hand pc for even cheaper! I almost got a DSLR just before I enlisted too, I'm glad I waited till after. If I had gotten something, it would have spent more than 90% of the time sitting at home depreciating. Not a good way to spend your money. Leave the money in a good savings plan, at least you'll earn some interest.

yea man quite true.. i heard from alot of people that they really wana slack when booked out.. thinkin of depreciation.. yea quite true huh.. after hearing from u who is almost goin thru what i'm goin thru now, i think i'm gonna save up much.. might get the latest entry level dslr of the time when the time is right! ;)

aye ask u all ah, will a little degree in short sight will pose a problem to manual focusing? jus a lil curious.

Two more year before going to NS. Do u think i should get D40/D40x/D60/D80, beginner in photography or i should wait two more year before getting one better Cam like what "1megapixel" intend to do. However even looking through the forum threads, i still don't really understand a lot of things (AF len ??? , MF ??? , VF ??? etc...), should i stick with my old film SLR? Current in ITE college central (Macpherson) in Digital Animation courses, a lot of spare time but if there is a assignment on then i will be very busy. Wanted to go to join photography club in school but the club is (bishan ITE) -__-'''
So do you think i should get a DSLR Camera?

No.. you just need to get it corrected.

hey bro u mean corrected in what way? optically correct my eye, compensate for my eye in the camera or what??

Either will do. You will need to be able to see the focusing screen clearly.

hmm.. how do i compensate for my eye on the camera???

Isn't there a dioptre adjustment on the viewfinder? It should be able to correct for a slight short sightedness. If got astigmatism then cannot, you'll need glasses.
