is b + W filter good?

thanks dude. seriously this should be made into a sticky.

just a note on the colour tone of the higher grade b+w filters:
i have 6 b+w filters, all of which have the gold wordings on the front of the filter rim. yet, they all display different colour tones - some are yellow, some are green, and some are purple. therefore, i am led to believe that judging based on the colour tone is inaccurate to determine if a filter is of the higher or lower grade filter.

Anyone here uses a B+W 010 UV-Haze x1 MRC filter?

The photo below shows the fluorescent (daylight temperature) light's reflection on two filters.

...

Thanks for your thorough comparison and photos. But as far as I know, you can't confirm which one has aluminum ring or brass ring simply base on the different markings and reflection colors. I've seen and bought both types (w/ markings on front and on the side) B+W MRC filters from CP. When I asked them about the difference between the two type of filters (they had both in stock when I asked them), I was told they were just different batches :dunno:

As to the reflection colors of lenses, I've seen yellow, blue, green, red, purple and etc. from my Pentax lenses, and they are all Super-Multi-Coated :)

I guess no one wants to pay so much for a filter and get a lemon. I was at CP and they warned about those B+W that were made in China. For those who know about such things, is it safe to say that so long as the filter has a "Made in Germany" printed on it somewhere (front or side), it is the REAL thing? I mean, those B+W that are made in China would not be labeled as made in Germany, would they?

I believe the made in china ones are also marked with Made in Germany...

Thought so too. I got 2 different versions from CP and OP and both are made in germany...

I guess CP just want us buying from them ONLY! That's why. Actually I bought one 58mm B+W filter from them which is exactly the same as those sold in OP: no letter/word marked inside the ring but all out side. And it's made in Germany too.

I don't think those b+w filters sold in OP were made in China. They are all made in Germany, only either in different batches (was told so by CP when I questioned them in the shop) or different materials for the rim. Glass is exactly the same. I've used both types, and I don't see any difference at all. Haven't got any problem w/ either one.

Whatever it is, I still prefer the brass ring variants ;)

can someone do a shot to shot comparison with B+W and normal filter? to convince the results?

yes i think u should, B+W somehow crack. which is very unlikely. anyone knows what should i do?

What to do? buy another one :D

I've broken one before :D I didn't buy another one.

I have a Nikon NC on the front of a Canon lens. Will I burn in camera-hell? :bsmilie:

i was actually contemplating that myself with my oly... but i've always loved nikon when i was using flim... Its just the D3 is way out of reach... and their entry level dsl aren't as attractive... lol

As an ex-film user, I actually suggest that you shoot slides ands have them scanned digitally. The results you get exceed those from a D3 or 1Ds MkIII.

talking abt filters and reading thru this threads, i find that i have similar situation with hoya filters. the metal strip on the interior of the ring holding the glass pops out, n the glass is very lose. I dont quite believe in Hoya filters. I think B+W is good n is worth.

I have been using Hoya filters for 30+ years and I never had this problem. Another issue about Hoya filters being hard to clean..... Not me. I use a Lenspen and problem solved. If it gets too dirty to clean, I just replace it with a new one. Unlike B+W filters, I don't feel my bank account drained.

Image quality between both brands of filter.... I am a 'tan chiak' photographer and I can't tell their differences. Neither can my clients.
