Internal Cut filters... do you throw yours away?

Hi folks! Just wondering, how many of you who modded their dSLRs to dedicated IR throw away their internal infrared cut filters? And how many of you keep it? If you're keeping it, why? Does it serve you any purpose in the future?

I kept mine, in case I ever wanna turn it back to normal... but I highly doubt it. Mine's a compact though. ;)

i think people would have considered that the change will be permanent

most of the time you don't see them modding the expensivem odels anyways.. always a d70 or d40 or compact

so if spend money to convert then actually try to convert back again.. a bit waste $$$

might as well get new one :)

That's why I asking if anyone keeps their IIRC filters, especially those who modified their D70 themselves... haha!

I'm keeping mine for whatever purpose... I'm someone who likes to keep and keep and keep things... so much so that my bedroom looks more like a warehouse now. Haha!

So! Anyone keeps theirs? Throws theirs? Sells theirs even? Hahaha!

I still have mine for the D70.

So why do u keep it? Any use for it? =)

Good Question ... :dunno:

For old time sake, I guess.

Haha! Yes! For old time's sake... I'm someone like that too...

Anyone else?

Anyway, just a side question... did anyone try to modify their own camera and spoil it in the process? Like, proper working camera, wanna mod to IR only, dismantle, something screwed up, cannot assemble or sensor crushed or lens came out or something... Anyone? =)

why must modify if can screw on a IR filter which is convenient and cost saving?
Can anyone enlighten me? because of the pic quality?
wats the difference?

Modified cameras can take better IR pics. How so?

Every CCD or CMOS sensor is sensitive to IR, but because the internal filter cuts out (hence infrared cut) most of the IR that reaches it, you need very long exposures if you simply put on an IR filter. And long exposures = more noise. Shorter exposures with higher ISO also = more noise.

An IR filter is almost black. So u imagine if you stack like 5 ND8 filters together, how long exposure you need to take a visible light shot, it's the same with IR. The IR cut filter acts like a stack of ND8s to infrared light... haha! If I may put it this way. =)

So to answer your question on why must modify, in my own context and I'm sure for many others as well, because you can take normal visible light speed exposures, which means u can handhold your IR shots, and noise won't be much of a problem!

Wanna modify yours? :bsmilie:

Yes feel like modifying, u got lobang?
How much will it cost and it is done locally?
But i only got 2 cameras, F31fd and FZ18 both have 2yrs+ warranty left.

Since FZ18 is my main camera, i dun think i want to modify it.
But F31fd is rare and has 2 yrs warranty, i can't bear to sacrifice it too.
Will the conversion void the warranty (even if i convert back to normal before sending in for repair)?
Dilemma....

Why dont anyone just sell me a cheap IR modified camera?

Haha! Sorry ah... no lobang. =) I did mine myself, and I won't say it's too hard... but neither will I say it's too easy. I mean, to me it's easy la... just dismantle carefully then fit back mah. But different cameras different layout, so I can't say I'd be successful with all cameras.

I think your F31fd & FZ18, don't modify la. If I were you (but I'm not), I would look for cheap 2nd hand cameras with good functions too... so that even in IR, I can manipulate my picture at the time of exposure. If I had the money, I would go for reasonable MP, long zoom, IS, good performance at high ISO, hotshoe... that kind of thing. But I had money constraints and couldn't justify buying another camera to modify. Since my mju:800 has been sitting around for so long without use, I decided to use it lor. 8MP, 3x zoom, A & S mode... pretty usable high ISO for 4R prints, weatherproof (which now that remains to be tested)... good enough for me for my first IR cam. If I fall head over heels in love with IR, I'll consider getting a Lumix or Fuji prosumer to mod.

So... what're your thoughts? Haha! Various Cash Convertors have quite a selection. U just have to make sure you get one reasonably priced coz their prices are usually crazy high. Or just Yahoo! Auctions or eBay! B&S also has a good selection... =)

Damn... I'm super lor soh...

Anyone else has their IIRC filter removed from their dSLRs? =)

I keep mine, same like you, just in case I wanna turn it back to normal.

Haha...sad to say, I did snapped some cables in one of my prosumer cams during one of the "operations". But that was long ago when I was first playing around with cam-modding. :embrass:

Yah...I do keep my hot mirrors with me. There had been times where I need to "reconvert" the IR cameras back to normal....

Oh no! Then what happened to your unsuccessful operations? The cameras bo bian must throw away? Aiseh...

And how come you need to reconvert back? Haha! So what camera(s) are you using now for normal photos and for IR?

Just need to replace the cables. Sent back to service center to do that.

Mine I keep. Incase I sold the camera the guy can have the option to turn it into normal DSLR. But I never sold mine and love it everytime I take IR shots.
D100 is still the best camera around. 10 years down the road I think still can make it.
