Intern/photography assistant needed for COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO

We deal mostly with fashion, product, corporate & commercial.
We do not do event.

Duration of work: From April 2014(minimum 2-3 months, those who can work longer will be favoured)
Wage: $400-$800 per month, depending on experience
Working hours: 5 days week(but may require overtime & occasional weekend work without monetary reimbursement)
Allowance: If work ends late, taxi claimable & food will be provided of course

Basic knowledge of handling professional lighting strobes will be a plus.
Will be a plus if assistant has experience in freelancie assistant work before & is
looking for opportunity to learn & develope the craft of commercial photography.
We use mainly medium formats & shoot on tethered mode mostly with various
shooting softwares such as Leaf capture, Capture 1, Phocus etc....
It's not a requirement to know all these softwares as I feel having the interest, passion
& hardwork is more important.

It's a rough road ahead & not advisable for someone who does not know
what he is going for. It is physically demanding in the commercial field &
I believe that one should have the 'basics', or be humble to learn from scratch.
Pay is base on experience. Primary job role is more of an assistant to our in-house photographers.
But opportunity may be given depending on experience & attitude.

Good photographers but poor businessmen. The entry level for cleaners is $1k and they also get to learn while on job. Overtime pay also reimbursed.

Part-time crews $800 (less than 5 days a week), full time twice the amount per month. Also learn on job + reimbursement & other benefits.

You may want try project basis assignment where u can offer better instead of 3 months and 5 days per week

Good luck!

A word of advise to TS, some of what you expect your intern to do may contravene Singapore Labor laws. I strongly suggest you read the employment act.

TS, are you joking? Intern with such experience paid such a payment .. I start off as a intern and I work 5 days.. And I m taught how to use and work along aside the main PG ... You expect those who have such experience to not to get paid for their level of experience?

Even the intern need $$ to travel to work and eat their meals. You think those amount can cover?

Thanks for highlighting this. Good for all employers and employees to brush up their knowledge

I'd give Lumina the benefit of the doubt unless we know they had the deliberate intention to flout the law. It's quite possible for companies to be unaware of the actual laws, and just do things how they've always been done, perhaps when they first entered the industry. E.g., Before reading up, I also had no idea the extent to which interns, or even part-time employees are covered under the Employment Act.
- Part-time employees are entitled to one rest day per week if he/she is required to work for at least five days in a week.
- Part-time employees should be paid for overtime work.
- Part-time employees are entitled to paid public holidays.
http://www.mom.gov.sg/employment-practices/part-time-employment/Pages/default.aspx

Overtime allowance is payable if the employee is required by the employer to work above the limit of working hours specified above.

All work in excess of the normal hours of work (excluding break time) is considered as overtime work. An employee must be paid no less than 1.5 times his/her hourly basic rate of pay for overtime. Payment for overtime work must be made within 14 days after the last day of the salary period.

MOM had a media reply which stated that interns are covered, so that's pretty clear cut. Not too late to make things right, Lumina. :)

The Employment Act covers every employee who is engaged under a contract of service, including interns. This means an employer is obliged to accord statutory benefits prescribed under the Act to an intern, as long as the intern performs work and has work arrangements similar to that of a regular employee in the organisation.

For example, interns who enter into a contract of service should not be required to work for more than 8 hours in one day or more than 44 hours in a week. However, he may be required to work overtime if he consents to do so, subject to the limit of 12 working hours per day. Total overtime hours should also not exceed 72 hours per month. The employer must pay the intern for the extra hours of work or for working on his rest days or public holidays. The rate for overtime work should be no less than one and a half times his hourly basic rate of pay. The employer must grant the intern one rest day (which is not paid) in a week, which may be on a Sunday or any other day.

There are more... to the act. Need to read more.

On who is covered under schedule IV of the act. and who is not. and what Schedule IV covers.

And there are also guidelines on what is considered part-time, and what is considered intern.

But there is no minimum wage in Singapore at this point. We can only hope that the hiring companies has the conscience to pay properly.

I would stop here. I am not a lawyer or officer of MOM. I am in no way qualified to give advice in these matters. TS need to find the right people/lawyers to get the correct advice and proceed from there.

Yup, what I posted was just a snippet of some of the things that were new to me, didn't want to paste a wall-of-text and reveal the full extent of my ignorance. Haha.

MOM has a page with links to the complete legislations:

That is why I encourage TS to find out the info on their own. If they have questions, should direct them at MOM or a labor attorney.

Thanks all on the advice & links to mom guidelines.
Didn't realized by posting more details, I might have angered a few or put off many.
Btw. I have paid the similar amount in getting interns from local tertiary instituition
for internship programs, so please no worries, I do not intend to flout the law
or take advantage of any novice.

Thanks but my company has been abiding by the law & has not had a brush with the law before
and we are definitely not underpaying by market standard.
Those speaking about market rates, perhaps if you are a commercial photographer/photography operator,
you would understand better to comment.

And there is a more detailed contract to be agreed by mutual party
before we proceed to employer-employee relationship, all fulfilling MOM guideline.
Otherwise how else would my company have operate for 8 years, groomed many
juniors that has went on to higher grounds.

I would not paint a glossy picture for photographers wannabe,
and is definitely not a work-horse also. Regarding working hours, you can be quick to comment,
but maybe as I have not elaborate, Those working hours are sometimes erratic, but most of
my interns has enjoyed many off days, more than what mom has suggest.
I also reimburse transportation & food if you guys have read clearly.

I do not pay for overtime, but I do compensate by off days & hours off and other benefits.
But do I need to paint such a beautiful picture for all wannabes?
I could have a whole load of people calling me, but hope you guys respect my take
and tone of voice. There would surely not be many who would apply.
"But i'll rather employ someone who has the right mind & interest to take up the job and learn".

I just want to highlight that the tone of my post is for me to screen off any
wannabes who are not serious enough to handle the erratic commercial photography world.
I have my fair share of interviewing interns who came to me for the wrong reason.
Thanks!

I can vouch for Lumina employment act as I had worked for them for 3 months, they were fair when it comes to work and gave me a chance to learn and grow as well. Sadly I cannot continue as I had a bike accident. Lumina had been a fun and great experience for me.

This is the era of people with high levels of entitlement mentality, yet with little or zero experience, no skills, no work ethics, no nothing. Few are those with the traditional mindset of working hard early one for delayed gratification later in their career or life. So I can understand where you are coming from.

But it may be also good to put yourself in the shoes of your employee. How do you expect someone to work for you full time on a salary of $400-$800 and survive in the world's most expensive city currently, when many could easily earn the same or more in just a few assignments if they do their own freelancing. A rich kid may join for the learning or play play, but for someone looking for a real job, that kind of pay its hard.

Much has been spoken about this. Some perspective to add to this. In the film days, apprentices where paid either very low and some did the work for nothing (most notable person who did it this was Clang). Most things were not taught, but the little you got to see, you have to work backwards to figure out the what, why and how. You learned in the process a lot more than if you were told. Remember I had to figure out how to light hair with just a cryptic statement it is all about lighting plus I was not even apprenticed then; just a causal throw away remark by a master photographer mentioning about how he had to pick up shooting hair as a subject . Fast forward to today, yes it's more expensive but the low pay is still a sorting device if you want to learn you need to be prepared to invest if not you ail be just there for long enough to pick up what you think you need to know (which is always less than what you need). The hunger must be there to stay at long enough to build the basics up to support skill sets for the future ; as well a learning those skills that you do not have. If you are feeling to satisfied it is unlikely you will learn much.

Maybe it is now wrong to expect sacrifice to master skills may be it is better to pay for a workshop and learn everything there. Again there are also a lot of 1/2 past six photographers out the ho can bearly do the work, from whom it would be learn off from so sacrifice of low pay will be wasted.
