Interest check: Reverse mount adapter for Canon cameras - Cheap macro up to 4:1!!

Hi fellow CSnapper!

After reading the following thread in CS and also this thread, I decided to make my own reverse adapter so that I can reverse mount my Cosina 28-70mm lens onto my 300D together with a 25mm extension tube to achieve around 3:1 magnification ratio. Now that its done, everything seems to be working fine.

I am aware that many of the CSnappers here are keen in performing the reverse mount method to achieve high magnification for macro shots. Hence, I would like to check if you guys will be keen in getting the reverse mount adapter should I decide to mass produce them. One end of it will be fitted onto ur camera/extension tube, while the other end will be a 55/52mm male screw thread so you can screw a 50 or 35-70mm lens (reverse) onto it.

Such adapter cannot be found in Singapore as far as I know. The price for each adapter will be approx $20. For those who are interested, feel free to indicate your interest in this thread. I will then base on the number of interested people decide if I will go on with this mass production.

With the default setup, it will be

EF mount <----> 55mm screw thread

You can purchase a 55 to 58mm step up to reverse your kit lens. That can of course be done.

ray, where do you get ur manual lens and extension tube?
new to reverse mount... actually no experience, just read about it only.
does more ext tube + wide lens = more magnification?

What is your setup's working distance? Was considering kenko ext tube, do u think that is a good idea?

btw, can EFS 18-55mm be used for reverse mount? Without manual apperture control, how will the apperture be controlled (if it can work)?

Yeah do source around thanks. 52mm and 58mm are the thread sizes for EF 50mm primes, and EFS 18-55mm. So that'll be really helpful!

Hi guys, I will be sourcing out for the 52 and 58mm thread for you guys in this few days time. Will keep you all updated once I get those material to start making.

hptay: I myself is also a newbie in such area, hence cant really answer ur question. But I believe that extension tube will effectively reduce your working distance between lens and subject, hence creating greater magnification. EF or EF-S lens will work for such setup too but will suffer from lack of dof as the lens' apeture cannot be control when reversed mount, hence all shots will be taken wide open. The better alternative will be to get a cheapo FD 50mm or other old lens with apeture control. This way you can stop down to increase dof. Such lens are available cheaply @ under 100. The working distance for such a set up (ext. tube + reverse lens) is under 10cm. But you get very high magnification which even a true macro tube will find it hard getting.

behyx: I believe that there is such an reverse mount adapter from Nikon itself. I want to do this for Canon mount because of its scarcity in the region. But if I see a demand for Nikon based reverse adapter, I may consider doing it too..
