Hi Mod

i've been looking at the threads in the forum, esp Portraits and Poses.
initially, i was like looking for threads that has more replies, hoping to gain more from there. More replies could be that there are alot of constructive advices and comments. Right?

but i was WRONG. 9 out of 10 threads that has high view counts and numerous replies are due to some 'unwanted' comments made to the pics posted. Everything seems to be going on fine until some XXXXXXXX guy (hereafter, i will call this guy, the D guy) posted his view on the pic. From that moment onwards, 90% of the subsequent replies were targeted at this D guy.

At first, i was quite entertained by the comments.. it's like watching a TV drama.. hahaha..
but then, after watching a few episode, i realised that i'm here to learn, not to watch drama!
i couldn't find anything helpful or constructive from all this flaming.

I was surprised that nothing was done to stop this..
So, here i am, to offer u guys a solution.

For anyone who wish to start a thread, he/she can add a line on the 1st post.
he/she can add something like this
'XXXXXXXX is NOT WELCOMED to post any comments and remark in this thread.'
If the thread starter didn't put anything, it's free for all to comment.

So, if the unwelcomed party still insist in posting a comment in a thread with the line added, moderator shld come in to delete it, as well as to issue a warning to that guy.

I hoped that u guys could take a look at my suggestion and make this forum a better place to learn photography

Hi,

Welcome to CS, and thank you for your suggestion, even though I don't believe it is a solution.

We will not encourage members to specified who they do not want to participate in their threads.

Every one has the right to post in any open discussions as long as they abide by CS terms of use. If your suggestion is adopted then more than half the time the person whom was identified as not welcomed will intentionally post to prove that he/she has the right to post even if not welcomed.

The moderators' job is not to help members filter out posts from his/her enemies; and shouldn't we all be friends?

It is OK if the thread starter wants to post pictures just for sharing and state that comments are not necessary, but still, it is up to the rest to respect that request.

There are many other discussions in CS that are informative and helpful. No one forces you to read the ones that are meaningless to you. You have to be selective in what you read base on what you hope to get in return from CS to make your time spent here as fruitful as possible for yourself.

Finally, there is an ignore function. You can put another member onto your own ignore list if you choose not to read any posts from that member.

Thanks!

- Roy

Wheee, I cannot agree more.

Are you not contradicting yourself?

Encourage making friends by giving options of ignoring certain people?

No. I am not contradicting myself.

I encourage everyone to be friends, but that does not mean I believe that everyone can be friends. If 2 person simply cannot see eye to eye, then I suggest the the ignore list as an alternative. Also, I did not suggest the ignore list as the ONLY alternative.

With all due respect, I think you have quoted me out of context.

Do you have anything to comment about chelseafc's suggestion? If yes, I would like to hear from you.

Matter of perspective and ways of doing things

If I were to encourage "friendship", I will not put in an "ignore list".

I do have an "ignore list" for those people whom I do not care a damn for. I just do not respond to such.

And honestly, I should have set up an "ignore list" earlier!

There is no question that the TS's observations are valid.

But there is little that can done. Disagreements are relative. What is acceptable to one is not acceptable to another. And no one has whatever authority to tell the other what to do.

The situation is to accept what is happening, or ignore, or leave.

For me, I have decided to stop commentting on images in the open forum. Not worth it. The quality of comments is really pathetic, and the number of people with fragile egos is really quite amazing!.

I am not alone on this. Recently a member had written to me lamenting the deterioration of the exchanges in the forums.

What can be done? It depends on the rules that CS sets. Within what you had set, there is little that can be altered to change the status quo.

Unless there is a major mindset change on the part of CS as to the direction you want to go.

For example, there are forums that insist on the real name of members. That itself, I believe, has a great effect on how people writes. Are you willing to do that?

CS has one of the most easily off-topic forum posters around.
Live with it.

D... wonder which D here... me nick also got D...

Just being realistic here. Just like I would encourage people around me to quite smoking, but would also suggest that they do so in an open space if they really have to. I don't see that as contradicting myself if I were to say both things in the same conversation.

Then I take this (and some earlier conversations we've had) as an indication that I am not on that list of yours. Whatever the reason for that may be, I take it as a compliment.

While his observations are valid, the solution he offerred is not practical. In fact if implemented it has the potential of creating more unhappy arguments and grudges.

Personally I will deleted comments like "xxxx is not welcomed to post in my thread" if I come across any.

Any other examples besides the fact that we do not require members to use their real name on the forums that would demonstrate that "within what we have set there is little that can be done to change the status quo"?

Also, are there really nothing that can be done from a member's perspective other than to accept, ignore or leave? We need members who believe in upholding the standard of CS (in all aspects) to help us out by not giving up.

As I said, just different ways of seeing and doing things

Ha! Nonononono!

There are very few on this list of mine. The people I ignore are not those who disagree with me. I can take a lot disagreement, just as I would dish out disagreement when I think appropriate.

Those who made to my list are those whom I do not respect at all as persons at all. I have absolutely no desire to even make acquaintance with such types, let alone friendship.

I agree with that. I do not think the solutions are really practical. But I have no practical solutions for his observations. Hence my decision to do what I decided for myself.

I think there are. But it would amount to a "police state" which I think CS is not prepared to be.

Accept, ignore, or leave, are in my opinion, very sensible approaches to any relationship that for whatever reasons, less than ideal, and had to remain in status quo.

But if you want to improve the status quo, may I suggest, if it were possible, contact "former/inactive" CS members and ask them why they are not active anymore.

Joining a forum like CS must be a give and take affair. For those who have "little to gain", but are prepared to share in the community, there is only so much nonsense they can tolerate before they feel it a waste of their time, and therefore quit.

An inactive member told me his wife asked "why are you wasting your time on people who do not appreciate and value your contributions? What do you gain, anyway?". I have not seen him wrote for a long time.

Another inactive member also told me it was a waste of his time on the forum.

The latest member in a PM, told me that it is getting harder and harder to enjoy CS, because of nonsensical and aggressive exchanges. People are not here for soap operas. But some just made it that way.

kinda agree with student on the degrading 'critiques'... too many informal groups inside... then some really protective, to the point either its mother & child, or maybe lovers... u say something about tis pic from a poster, the 'brudders' will go all out to protect & blast the hell out of the honest commentator... even thou the commentator only do a 1 liner, no offense kinda post... btw not talking about D***P*** as the honest guy here yet...

Someone talking about me?

chelseafc, live with it, enjoy what you can get from CS, and if you don't, don't come. We won't be missing you, yet.

People come peolple go, so, to those who found this forum not to their taste, don't come, don't post, don't comment as student swears not to, it's your choice. I am still having fun. So, I ma here. Just wait till the day, I no longer have fun here on CS, I will be gone in a blink of the eye.

Meanwhile, is there a class on how to comment being formed??? Can I teach???

honestly, i love your comments... straight to the point...

blunt like a butter knife stabbing right thru the flesh of a aristocrat... butter excluded...

Actually, I find that most of these complains are lodged by users who are only interested in information and has no interest in sharing their own thoughts/comments at all.

It's interesting to see that we actually have to humour those who 'leech' information and respond to their whims and whines because they cannot 'leech' in peace. Whereas those that are active (be it constructive or not) are constantly targetted for OT etc blah blah.

most of the time lurkers then come in with one power post, hit & run.

It's ok, even the lurkers have the right to speak their mind, we just simply ignore them. :bsmilie:

Agree with you. Even if the original guy is in the wrong, his "brudders" will blast and blast or try to OT in an attempt to drown out the correct guy.

Welcome to my thread!

didn't expect such a crowd..
first of all, i learnt something new today. it's call Accept, Ignore or Leave it. in short, AIL.

initially, i wanted to use the AIL for this thread, but i started it so i guess i can't just AIL.

1. my post count is low that's because i don't play a part in the soap operas. I'm not a lurker and i do try to give my comments whenever i can. AIL
2. the reason why i posted this is hoping that the moderator can do something abt it. my suggestion might not work and i didn't said it will and must work. However, i'm disappointed with the reply. wht u are trying to tell me is 'mind your own business'? yes, no one forced me to read those meaningless thread. yes, CS is full of OT and tht's the way it is. BUT, Singapore won't be what it is now if MM Lee applied the AIL 30 years back. u quoted 'We need members who believe in upholding the standard of CS (in all aspects) to help us out by not giving up'. This is precisely what i'm trying to DO! i sensed that this might be a problem and i'm trying to help. i won't even bother to type all these if i have given up. AIL
3. Deadpoet, i'm not saying that what u posted are WRONG. but u shld know what's the side effect, don't you? anyway, it's fine because i could apply AIL.. oh yah, i'm just a nobody so my presence is not important. u got that ALL RIGHT! :) AIL

Last but not least, i find this thread is going nowhere. so, may i ask 1 LAST favor from u, the moderator?
Could you close or lock this thread so that it stops here?

Thanks

I went past your posts, not the number of post counts. If yours are called comments, DeadPoet's comments are what? Do you really even know what comments are, there's constructive and unconstructive one. Before running, learn how to walk.

Do what? People just lurk and expect the best, no contribution nothing and trying to change the world. Like what my RSM used to say "You trying to improve SAF issit?".
