i just got an used mitsubishi elect window air-con unit. i plan to install it in one of the bedroom. anyone familiar with the technicalities of installing it safely. it weighs about 29kg. thanks.

i know, but want to save $$, where it can be saved. i want to mount it inside, with the window grille in place, so the risk of it falling out is almost none.

Get a qualify person better so he can advise, need to check your Circuit Breaker rating also.

Hmmmm, not too sure about window units, but if not mistaken you will need a qualified air-con installer to do the job.
Also u need check where u wan put your drain pipe. Else those ppl staying below you will complain if they get dripping water onto their aircons.

Killer Litter come to mind. If you are not the mechanically inclined and have never installed a window unit before, it is best to get some one qualify to get it fixed up, make sure the water outlet for excess drains properly not just to prevent antagonising your neighbour(s) below your unit but if the installation is not done correctly, the aircon will end up working harder then it should or wear off parts quicker. And as I mentioned at the begining...you have to ensure it is securely afixed to your window frame work and in some cases, you might actually have to remove the window panel before you can install the mounting braket to hold the aircon in place. I am not sure how much it will cost to have someone do it but....I doubt it will cost more then what you have to pay for a new one if the installation damages it or it falls on someone below *touch wood* I know someone from my reservist who does this professionally. If you really want to know some rough pricing I can contact him to a quote so you know where to start on your hunt for a good price to get it done.

May i ask which block/street your are staying? i am going to avoid that block... only superman can stop a falling object like an...... aircon.
Seriously, thrift on makan for a month and with money saved, have it installed by right the guy. If it goes wrong, you still got someone's head to hammer on.
As for such aircon, i was told it is not that energy efficient compared to a split unit system. the smaller it is, the harder it works. (YMMV though).
If its due to constraint of space/cash, and if its just for an occassional use, then, it makes sense to get a make shift solution.

well its quite safe to DIY (have one sitting on my grill for 20 years).
Just have to ensure that the window bracket is PROPERLY installed onto the window's ledge (not on the grill), the bracket is very wide which allows the window aircon unit to rest on it comfortably.
however a second person is needed to assist you to lift the aircon unit onto the bracket.

Eh, gd qn... actually i oso dun take alook at my aircon unit, but well i did aft reading this post of yours....
Mine looks like part of the window leh, got a frame just specially for the aircon. So its like my window frame is purposely cut short, then got this additional window frame without the glass panes to fit the aircon. But this additional window frame dun look like it can by DIYed in anyway.....
But i somehow rmb, that last time(coincidentally) the aircon service guy and the window changing guy were both at my place, so yea, let them discuss on whats the best way to mount that aircon. Then they came up with the above solution....

Not sure which window aircon you are referring, if it is the casement type then you can diy. For sliding window it will be simpler. You just need to mount the casement to one end of the sliding window (near power point). Make sure the window is tall enough for the casement. After that you just need to mount the aircon unit onto the casement. Once mounted, your window will not be able to lock but still can close so that NO rain will come in.
If it those swing out window, it will be more troublesome as you need to block up the extra spaces left behind after mounting the casement.
You don't have to worry too much about water drainage, there is a self evaporator to dry the water.
I did install the casement aircon in my old place by myself in the past, not that difficult.

No prob. Actually DIY is not impossible; with the right tools and wit, it can be mounted. Anyway, its a plug and play unit. Just make sure it does not fall off the window during mounting. It can happen, ok. :bsmilie:
