I dont mind. No idea about others.

I don't know man, you may feel excluded when people start talking in Indonesian. Worse if they start talking in slang specific to a particular city or region. Even though they speak standard Indonesian I can sometimes tell which major city they are from. The way Medan people speaks is different from Jakarta, different from Surabaya, Bali, Makassar, Menado, Ambon ...

If you speak Hokkien & Mandarin (Chinese), they are widely spoken in Chinese community, even some of my Non-Chinese friends are able to speak with that language.

Bahasa Indonesia is similar to Malay language .......pretty easy.

I'm actually looking for a street directory / street map for Medan, can't seem to find it in all the big local bookstores.... anyone know where I can get 1?

Also, anyone knows if there's a GPS map for medan. My PDA have GPS but can't find a map for it.

Lastly, who is the Telco operator for Medan? I like to check their handphone and data package.

Sorry dunno about Maps. For telco, you may wanna check :
GSM operator : Telkomsel (own by SIngtel last time I check), Indosat, XL
CDMA operator : Fren, Esia, Telkom Flexi.

Other bro may wanna add the list of new telcos.

Hi for Medan street directory maybe you can buy it at Batam, or maybe at Medan it self. and for GPS, I dont think medan have it...

For Teleco operator I suggest you use Telkomsel product, Because its more clear and the coverage area is wider.

I'm not sure with street map, but i believe you can find it in Medan, a map from local publisher.

- Street directory, you may find it in book stores, not so complete though, but better than none.
- Regarding the GPS, Yuwono gave a clear answer... but don't expect too much on it. hehe...
- There are 3 big telcos : Telkomsel, Indosat and XL. But if you'll be all over Indonesia, then you may consider Telkomsel since they have the widest coverage and then followed by Indosat and XL. But obviously the choice is yours.

I don't know how Medan is, but I guess there will be something called "WARNET" for you to access internet. (With their pc), I believe Wireless Internet Connection is a rare thing there... for now.
