Impressions of the K100D in Hong Kong

You mean the K10D has none of the features you highlight above? :dunno:
The ability to control remote flashes wirelessly from the body is a big advantage, if K10D don't have, that makes my decision simpler.. the K10D is less responsive?

Maybe i should wait for Phil Askey to make his review.

I'm quite sure that wireless flash control was pulled from the K10D's internal flash.

(but it can still control slave flashes (everthing can) and with a 360 or 540 it can control wirelessly.)

Phil's review will take at least 1.5 months, given the current cameras he has "committed" to review.

Yes, K10D doesn't have wireless flash feature, you'll need two external flashes to achieve that. While w/ N D80 (as well as P *istD), the built-in pop up flash can serve as a trigger to control/fire an external flash wirelessly. If you need that, you'd better go with the D80, or get two flashes for the K10D ;)

And yes, D80 feels more responsive (less shuttle close or mirror flip time, faster AF under low light, instant preview and etc...).

I don't think you'd see Phil's K10D review in another a couple of months, and hope you can wait that long :)

If I were you, I'd just get the N D80, and forget about Pentax

Next time I go to Sentosa ocean park, I'm going to try the 50mm f/1.4 and set the iso to 200-3200 and see what happens.

Only other problem is my Sanyo rechargeables failed me (charged full at departure but less than half strength after 2 days even when not used) and I ended up with 12 depleted batteries. Luckily can easily buy alkalines to replace..another PLUS point. Now changing to Sanyo Eneloop. Lesser capacity but assured longer charges.

Anyone else has tips to share with their camera?

Sentosa got Ocean Park meh... :dunno:

Your Sanyo batt can change.. no need to buy. search for the thread about sanyo batt and give them a call.

Forgot to add another sad story here...
I was at the their "SLS" when I came across the Slik Sprint Pro tripod complete with ball head:

http://www.thkphoto.com/products/slik/slik-ss2.html

It was listed as S$100. I thought it was reasonable since it had a ball head and bought it without bargaining. As I bought other stuff there, I realised I could actually bargain stuff down 40% ! When I came back to Singapore, I realised it was only selling around $70 here....now have to kick myself. Had to clear room in my luggage to squeeze it in, all to pay $30 more!

how's that working out? I actually just got a ppcp pro tripod v2, for it's quick release and higher rated weight (5kg).

Loving the 70-300 on it, btw :p

Hi dnaxe, how much did u get ur tripod for? Any link/website that i can view to get the specification? :sweatsm:

specs - see: http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=234130

I got it from mscolour for $150 with the bag. (the bag is pretty good, btw. Love the handle. It's unfortunately a little too large for the tripod - but - oh wel.)

I bought it because I wanted something with a quick release and a ballhead.

Impressions:

It seems to be pretty stable, but the heaviest combination I have is the K100D + 70-300 sigma = pretty light.

I prefer the levers on this tripod to the "twist/tighten" variety, much faster. Possibly less stable, but this hasn't been a problem. I haven't had a chance to use it with spikes yet, but indoors on granite/marble/wood with the rubber it seems solidly stable. (it has rubber or spikes, depending on how it's twisted.)

I haven't played with any other ballhead (perhaps I should) but this one doesn't really seem to be that great. It tends to "sag" a little even after being tightened, and there's basically no ability to set it at a nice tension which allows you pan nicely. I suspect it's possibly still better than a pan/tilt or a 3 way head, but i'm really not impressed - more because of the "sag" than the tension. (My first tripod, so i didn't check this.)

It's tall enough for me that I dont' have to use the center column, which is good.

Anything else you want to know?

glad you put the 70-300 to more productive use. the 18-200 has image issues but they are acceptable and I love the 18mm wide view..heh heh
No chance to use the tripod so far but I did test it in my room. Without the centre column extended, the tripod reaches my height which is good. its light, so the stability is an issue. I wonder if I use it to take fireworks on the bridge next to Esplanade will the wind cause alot of vibration? In such a case, will the SR take care of this vibration?
I was using those cheaper branded tripods with my istDL during the Singapore Fireworks Festival and it shook alot.

BTW, a small compensation : Cathay is selling that exact same tripod at $185...hah hah, so I guess I should not be complaining so much.

don't like that lah...always catch me...heh heh.
next time drop by my office for breakfast and we can talk more about this.
I intend to bring the sanyo batt in for replacement. wonder if they will entertain.
Was hoping to change all 8 x 2500 for 4 x Eneloop...what's the chance they will agree?

yeah. I'm still waiting for the 18-250 though ;)

As i posted elsewhere, SR will help, but what you really want to do is to add weights to the tripod.

I'm wondering if i should try to return mine and get a slik. The "sag" is really irritating.

the slik I have actually has a relatively low weight rating, so not sure if putting more weights is a good idea. btw, an old trick I learnt from astronomy, you can use a chain to absorb vibration also.

use a chain how?

and..

where is your office? (sms is fine :p)

Hi guys
Finally had some time (and bandwidth from the damaged cables) to upload some examples of my pictures fro Hong Kong. Unlike the others here who are showcasing their best efforts, mine are more of a point and shoot sample of what this camera is capable (or not capable) of doing. All shots are taken using the Sigam 18-200 lens.
Of interest are the ones in the dark aquarium in which the camera by default selected 3-4 seconds exposure, meaning even the AS would not be able to help. I chose the best ones from the list.
Do give your comments.
cheers!

My kid wanted this one!

Slik sprint pro should be at 75-90S$ range even at CP. no way 185

Wow, u r in HK now, buying any lens?
I esp like the 1st pic, rather cute, no wonder ur kid wants it.
The Sigma seems like a nice walkaround lens.

thanks..actually back from HK a few weeks already. As I mentioned, the 18-200 is a really flexible lens although it is a little slow at times.
