You have to check whether your focus to infinity really focus on infinity or not (with the M42 adapter on).

I can only get good centre sharpness on f/5.6. If lighting is possible, always shoot at f/16.

 the photo you show is at aperture f/5.6, but you need to "lock" it down to actually become f/5.6.

regarding the "unlock < . > lock thingie"

A typical workflow for using the lens may be as follows:
  1. select either manual or aperture priority mode on the camera
  2. guess the focus distance via the focus ring on the lens
  3. set the preferred aperture via the standard aperture ring, close the LOCK/UNLOCK ring and adjust the metering
  4. use the LOCK/UNLOCK ring to open the aperture again and compose your scene in detail
  5. close aperture via the LOCK/UNLOCK ring again (it stops at the initially selected aperture) and take your image
LOCK actually mean close down the aperture to the stated f/number, UNLOCK it actually let the lens to have more light through the lens and view finder, easier to compose the photo.

You have to check whether your focus to infinity really focus on infinity or not (with the M42 adapter on).
Is another issue, sometime the M42 adapter is too thick that, the lens cannot focus to infinity (even you turn the lens to infinity)

Also, have you screw the filter at the back on, it's part of the lens component, need it for proper focusing.

hmm, i think i need a video/live demo. lol!
nmd. i'll try again. thx. :)

yup, just try it out, turn to f/16, then try lock and unlock, and you will understand :) .

Bishan..:D

anyway...is the yellow line on the lens supposedly be in line with the red dot when attached on the camera?

Not needed, depend on the adaptor screw really.
