I'm thinking of Dumping Canon for Pentax!

Hahaha..
Pancake lenses?
Manual focus only?

no lah.. not Manual focus only.. Pentax has been making pancake lenses for a long time. Their earlier M40/2.8 is the manual focus one back in the 80s. Today in 2007, Pentax make fast AF pancake lenses like DA21, DA40 and DA70. Real niche piece of glass!

cheerss..

Pentax had better come up with he SDM lenses fast or risk losing its existing users .............. :)

and the lenses had better perform or else .............

Most of the current Pentax users bought into the make understanding accepting its strengths and weaknesses. They are generally happy with the flash performance, lens range and depth, etc. i.e. these people know what they are buying into. Hence any improvement by introduction of SDM lenses, faster focus, etc are bonus and nothing more. And the spate of enhancements since last year has been appreciated.

So those who complained about the weaknesses are more likely those who were all along sitting on the fence, attracted by the low price and expecting to get C or N stuff at P prices. They will never be happy. I remember this newbie that popped in here not too long ago saying how great the pentax is. then he started to hype on the slow af, lack of hsm and before long, he has jumped to another make. That guy was definitely not meant to be a Pentaxian. For me, I am quite happy with my K100D, so there is no "perform or else" issues for me...does that make me a true Pentaxian?? ;p (I can't tell one Limited lens from the next!) ;)

I have a question to the pentax users...

I heard that Pentax DSLRs can accept K mount lenses, no matter how vintage.

Thus, if I use an old, MF K mount lens, can I still meter with the lens? Is programme mode still useable? Or do I have to swtich to manual?

What's SDM? Sorry for noobness, frankly I'm happy with everything I can get with Pentax, and if I had money, that is.

As for lens performance, I think the quality of most Pentax lenses trounces most other brands, including first party; even the retailers state so happily, even though they aren't really Pentax friendly.

Work around it, certainly there are limitations, like the likelihood that the limited fps might deter sports photographers/action photographers.

Yes, that is one good thing about Pentax, it is backward compatibility with all their K mount lenses. Even the old M42 lenses with a suitable adaptor.

To use, you have to change the custom setting for 'Using aperture ring' to permitted. Meter by pressing the AE-LOCK button. You can use other modes, but they'll all shoot with the aperture wide open regardless of aperture ring setting. So it is best to switch to M mode for manual.

SDM = Supersonic Drive Motor. That means the motor driving the AF is built within the lens (ala Canon's Ultrasonic, Nikon's AF-S). Traditional AF operation uses an AF motor built within the camera body and engages a slotted gear on a normal AF lens that turns the focusing ring. The advantage of SDM would be quicker and quieter focusing.

The worry that I hope will never ever happen is if Pentax abandons the in-body AF motor in their future cameras, then it will be the same situation as the Nikon D40/D40X with it's "crippled" AF operation for non-AF-S lenses, in other words, if the lens is the regular AF but non-AF-S type, focusing is done manually. A bad deal if ever I saw one.

Secondly, if you look at Canon's case, all their old FD mount lenses became obsolete overnight when they went AF with the ultrasonic motors, with no FD to EOS adapter available (perhaps because they wanted everyone to move to the EOS system, so no old lens support). Plus older 3rd party AF lenses, principally Sigma, encountered problems with newer Canon EOS bodies due to chip incompatibility - no ultrasonic AF focusing available because of chip error, necessitating a re-chipping of the lens. A strong incentive to use only Canon's range of ultrasonic lenses.

but sometimes Pentax users can be a bit "religious" over why they choose Pentax! macam damn elite like that. :bsmilie:

The camera works. It take photos and its got its own little quirks. If its range of lenses and specs fits you then get it lor. I'm still using the K100D but at the back of my head, a voice keep telling me to buy the K10D. :dunno:

Most importantly work on the guy stabbing the button and upgrade his photoshop skills.

I don't see any reasons for them to abandon the in-body AF motor. They already have K10D and K100D Super that can support both type of lens, why not continue. If they decided to abondon, it's not gonna be a near future thing also as they need to built up enough SDM lens .

Anyone knows who's the distributor of Mertz in Singapore? Very interested in this flash:bsmilie:
