I really don’t know what I’m defending any more.

Small boy just rattling his mouth off. Sing is very small. There is no land mass for defence in depth, scorched earth and tactical withdrawal. Unlike Russia. So defence is how you want to define it. You still need soldiers and arms to keep others from getting ideas of sending in their troops and taking over. See what happened to ex-Portuguese East Timor when the Portuguese left.

Many people and PRs in Sing are very rich. When they are very rich, the world is their oyster.
They effectively become world citizens. They can go anywhere and easily get PR/green card or whatever. So these who are used to a life of luxury are unlikely to risk getting wounded or die fighting for Sing. Have to be realistic about this.

I think ALL Singaporean, PR, Work Permit holder and everybody whose working and living in singapore should defence Singapore ... defence Singapore does not mean = military service, but in the sense, helping Singapore Economy, Social, and Law.

Yes, totally agreed, I feel it is long overdue that women be drafted. If I have daughters I will not apply SG citizenship for them unless they serve NS.

My apolizy. They are

Did anybody ask him to defend in the first place?

if NS is abolished now, how many parents will still send their sons to the army voluntarily? People talk about defending a country like choosing between Nikon and Canon. "I dunno which is good anymore...". ya ya..

The guy has done nothing for his country yet. Not shed a drop of blood and now he questioned our ex -prime?

May I bring to your attention that guy HAS served his country, He is an officer....

I agree with you. Most of the global citizens can travel anywhere they want to, or at least to the countries which need them. To even have some of the talent here is already a privilege. Just one of my encounters recently, we badly need a talent, tried to get an employment pass for him here, but got delayed by MoM for months. I think it's probably due to the change in government policy, to tighten up immigration. And truth is, no local has his kind of capability.

The result, money is lost, crucial activities are delayed. I think the government has to relook into its recent tightening of the immigration policies.

Instead of complaining as if the world owes him a living, he should start looking at what skills he can improve on to make him more desirable in the job market.

You fight for your country and you fight to protect your family. Isn't that enough? Does it matter if there are 4 million foreigners and only one million local born Singaporeans?

Mr Lim can always try to clear plates at food court or be a domestic helper and snatch the jobs back from foreigners.

I've read and re-read but it seems to me he isn't entirely clear on what he wants, or at least what he wants to convey:

But he said the key difference between him and his foreign friends was, “I tell them, this is my country. I can’t just leave here whenever I want to. You can come and play and work here, but I have to stay here.”
"I don’t think it’s about integrating foreigners"
"he could not afford an HDB flat"
"I can tell you honestly that the sentiment on the ground is a bit different.”
I do like the question from SM:

"What do you want me to do to make you feel you belong?”

U mean he had a choice not to do NS?

Going through OCS is not "defending". Fighting a war is.

If your quote has been taken into consideration, should he be requoted as this?

"I really don't know what I'll be defending anymore"

Right.

he hasn't defended anything or anyone as a matter of fact. Probably defended against going to jail for not skipping NS.

“If this is happening, it is very serious,” said SM Goh.

“If the majority feel they don’t belong here, then we have a fundamental problem. Then I would ask myself: What am I doing here? Why should I be working for people who don’t feel they belong over here?” asked SM Goh.

This.... What on earth is he trying to say? That if the majority don't feel they belong, he doesn't work for them? Or not going to care?

Hopefully that's just a misquote, or it's going to get plastered all over the internet as his version of "elite uncaring face" :bsmilie:

Young kids in Singapore like to complain. They have never lived through any real hardship in their lives and act like the world owes them a living. If a foreigner gets a "glamorous" job that they wanted it is the government / employer / foreigner's fault nevermind that they don't have the skills or the education required. When the cleaner at the food court is a PRC they complain that it is so irritating that they can't speak english, if the cleaner is a Singaporean old aunty then it is the government's fault that old aunties have to clean tables, when someone asks them will they consider a job as a cleaner they say that it is below them. That means they are not happy whenever the cleaner is a foreigner / old Singaporean / young Singaporean. So who should be cleaning tables?

suggest you train some dogs and circus bears to do it.

then can't complain, or the circus bear will growl at them. :bsmilie:

Ok, it's TIME for Apple to bring out the iROBOT...the first mass produced robot that does the work of cleaners (and maybe even greeters). In the long run, there may even be fewer jobs for the greying population.

robots:thumbsup:

believe me, when you do robots, there will be more questions:

- were these robots made in china? why aren't we buying robots that are produced in singapore, since that would create jobs for singaporeans?

- why are these robots putting old people out of jobs?

- robots are competing with us young people for jobs, like that how to live???? :bsmilie:

well, it's easy to be an armchair critic and sit around and fling mud at others' solutions.

but thinking of a real alternative that makes everyone happy? nah, leave it to the people you complain about. is quite comfortable in the armchair.:bsmilie:

This discontent can be the perfect start for a Tea Party movement in Singapore. :bsmilie:
The Singapore Dream is shattered by the influx of foreigners competing...
