i just got my K-x!

well i've met someone like that before..

he was using a canon camera, and he couldn't find out where to set his timer on his 400d or 450d.. i wanted to pengz. and he had been shooting for.. at least 6 or 7 months.

Okay... i better find out where's the self-timer is on the k10d. ;p

Must say Canon & Nikon has marketing power.... can't understand why ppl choose those brands especially when Pentax packed so much more features (features that I need) in one neat package and the reasonable legacy lenses and getting not so reasonable current digital ones. :dunno:

well, some people in newbies corner like to urge new users to take canon and nikon "because your friends are likely to have lenses for you to try".. i suppose it is attractive when you look at that statement.

what i don't understand is the lack of logic behind such. maybe if you live in say, indonesia , where cameras are present but less common and more scattered around across a large area.. and hence that logic would make sense - singapore is so small, and it probably isn't a problem meeting up with friends, scattered across the island or not.

i guess it's more of a herd mentality, really.. i think whatever people (or we) want to say about pentax users, it won't be far from the truth to make the statement that pentaxians tend to be discerning consumers.

p.s. k10d timer should be same operation as most other pentax cameras, just press the function button, and press up. ;)

err.. happen to me when i was using my fuji S5... :bsmilie: i never forget that moment... telling my wife i dunno how to set the timer...:bsmilie:

better still, at punngol beach setup everthing ready, arm with a trigger cord, calculate the exposure for 10 stop, stop watch ready, want to shoot bulb mode, i just couldn't find the way to change to bulb mode... :kok:

there will always be brands that are more popular, and certains brand that are like dark horse, very good but not many ppl knows about it...

i was also ignorance about pentax when i got my first dslr... my impression of pentax at that time was CMI... but i end up spending most on pentax... :bsmilie:

anyway i go shoot XMM, always same question, what cam are u using, whoa pentax ah... can see, what lens is that blah blah blah... why ur lens so small... then i say, no matter big lens or small lens, can shoot pretty XMM is good lens.... :bsmilie:

The line "because your friends are likely to have lenses for you to try" is the biggest lie ever for canon and nikon users. I've a very good friend and when i asked "Can i borrow your nikon 50mm/1.4?" Not once but like 4-5 times on separate ocassions. He sidetracked and wiggled himself out of it. Some friend, huh? :bsmilie:

Definitely herd mentality, and ours are... we are discerning consumers with LBA Syndromes. :sweatsm:

Canon and Nikon has very strong marketing presence. Their ads fill the papers constantly. When the big electronics chain take ads...mostly is their DSLR that is showcased. I recently saw a Sony brochure that was sent to my house. Looks like there are also becoming increasingly agressive with their marketing promotions. This mass appeal that is helping to move consumers to their brands.

Pentax seems to have a more "guerilla" presence. Do not recalled even seeing an ad on the release of the K-X. The popularity of this must be amazing based on the marketing budget spend on this. The Pentax brand (given its quality pdts) seems to have niche appeal. But this is probably why ths gives Pentax users here its unique identity. :D

One would only come to Pentax given enough research. But as newbies who are struggling to even know the basics of photography, not many would do a comprehensive brand comparison. And once you go deeper into photography, most probably, you would want to stay with the brand you chose for your first camera, especially if you got a couple of investments in their lenses.

Seriously, when I first started photography (or more specifically venture into the realm of dslr) some 1 and 1/2 years back, I almost set my mind on a Nikon D40x after comparing it with the then Canon400D. That was the world to first-timers in general. Somehow by some twist of fate, I decided to back-off from the D40X purchase and started to spend a few months doing more thorough research of different brands (perhaps a occupational habit). I was then dead sure on going into Pentax! - You know, it was like why isn't people giving attention to such a great brand?!! In fact, I've always view people using entry Canikons (ok, the pro series camera is another story altogether) as people who did not conduct proper research and succumb to mass marketing influence. The ergonomics for k10d back then was wow to me. I also love the design and size of the Pentax DA limited primes. I have to admit I had no liking for the FA limiteds then but I had since grew to fell deeply in love with them.

Seriously, I would most likely have stopped with a 18-55 kit lens and probably a 50 f1.8 had I chosen Canikon. But my whole photography career and investments had been largely different because of Pentax - their primes are more than lenses, more like works of arts and engineering marvels. To end with a cliche, the rest was history... Ha.

This sudden spike of new Pentax user is really quite encouraging but I still prefer to be a cult brand user. d:

Hello,

I am totally new and noob to Dslr......currently still using my Cannon S5is prosumer to learn basic photography.....

I read and heard so many good review on the Kx that i am very temped to upgrade to dslr....

Can i ask if there is like a basic duo lens package? sorry that i sound noobs cos i see like most other band have duo lens package for beginner like me?

or can someone guide me on how to get a Kx body with two lens kits that is good for a beginner if there si no duo lens package?

Hi poseur, welcome aboard :)

The K-x has a two lens kit (18-55mm and 50-200mm), but for the first shipment of K-x, Emjay (the Pentax distributor) did not make the 2 lens kit available, only the basic 18-55mm lens kit. There's been some demand for that though, so hopefully the next shipment will bring in 2 lens kits.

In any case, nothing is stopping you from getting the basic kit and then buying a second lens later. In fact many of us here would advice you to start with the basic lens first and start shooting things and discover yourself what you like shooting best, then use that to decide what lens best suit you... it may not necessarily be a basic telephoto zoom lens.

apperciate your advise.....chirstmas shopping time is near......start with basic lens first......just hope still in stock.......

Pentax is truely value for money. though im not a user of pentax their price compare to canon and nikon is much better. for the price of k-x, one can only get canon 1000d or nikon d3000. yet the functions of k-x and sensor is much better.

I probably will changed to pentax or even oly sony should they still provide same level value for money products. But then not so soon. The camera industry have to first obsolete my CMOS senor before i even start think about changing system. Good thing for me all the stuff bought 2nd hand - sell also can sell back almost same price (for lens). Body sure depreicate at least 200-400 bucks.

k-x is so tempting to buy. when it start appearing more on the bns market i will probably get 1 ...maybe for my gf hahah

Agree!

I read and read and researched the heck out of the internet, before settling on the K100Ds as my first DSLR. Was one of the best entry-level models then, and still holds its own even now.

have stick liao...just go and buy my single len Kx......so excited now.

saw the dual lens kit too 50-200mm at around 1150.....

Just got my very first dslr - a blue Pentax Kx 18-55 lens kit. damage $950.
Will be exploring the various features. Think this will be a good complement with my LX3.
Can share the UV/Polarisers and close up filters with the LX3 for now. Like macros.
Will not invest in other lens for now.

Well I gotta relate this incident at Brisbane airport. Walked into one of the airport shops selling cameras and was carrying my K-7. While looking at the camera display, up comes a sales supervisor and makes pitch for Canikon and tries to pooh-pooh my Pentax (which they didn't have, just like in Changi Airport - Emjay are you reading this... I can't find any Pentax DSLR on sale in Changi Airport).

I just nodded politely with his sales pitch. Then I said try this and passed him my K-7...
His jaw literally dropped when he picked up the body fired the shutter. He was speechless when I told him what it could do and showed him a HD video clip I had taken earlier. Poor fellow just mumbled away something and hurried to another shopper. :bsmilie:
