Excellent thread with your clear details!
I was there but only a day trip last September, before I started trying to take decent pictures. It was clear and sunny with NO 云海。Someone posted a week later and the scenery was completely different....

Thanks ed9119!

The english translation is on the plaque as well.

It says:

心旷神怡的感觉来自于人与自然的完美结合
A relaxed and happy feeling comes from the harmonious coexistence between human and nature.

Yes, huangshan weather is very unpredictable. My first day is sunny and 2nd day is cloudy as hell. I did not get to see Cloud Sea as well. Clouds were too high the 2 days I was there.

We did not take the steep 一线天 route as most people are coming up that way. Making 2 way traffic very difficult. Most of us going down went the other way (see below):

One day for Huangshan is definitely not enough. To finish most of the major trails, at least 3 full days are needed.

hi daredevil123,

i enjoyed your experience through these pictures, and i do like some of them, and yes, as i have been told before, that it is your choice to post many pictures since it is your thread.

just wanted to say, this thread is good, but it would be better with less repetition of the type of shots - i'm sure yes, there are subtle differences in these, and i understand the constraints of timing when travelling, it's just that i wanted a more all-rounded view of the area with the quantity of shots loading here, and it was just that style, over and over again. this made the thread slightly less enjoyable to view than it could have been..

hope you catch my drift. anyways, thanks for sharing the information. greatly appreciated.

Jthian,

Please note that there are some discrepencies on the schematic map.
The parts on Small Dreamscape 小梦幻 and 始信峰 is not too accurate. Either they changed the routes slightly or the map is not right.

Should be like this:

黑虎松<-----始信峰<-----坚琴松------->小梦幻(观音峰)

新白鹅站 connects to 坚琴松 only.

The junction is 坚琴松. To the East of 坚琴松 is 小梦幻(which is on 观音峰). West of 坚琴松 go towards 黑虎松 and you will pass 石笋峰, then 始信峰.

Hi night86mare ,

I do understand where you are coming from. I debated with myself on the quantity of similar shots as well. In the end I just put them in so the people who are planning to go there themselves will know what to expect along the way. If this is just a pure gallery, I would definitely post a lot less pictures. However, I have not seen any sort of a guide on Huangshan on CS and was trying to approach it this way. Thus, the inclusion of the schematic map and shots of the major attractions along the way.

That being said, I am glad you liked some of the shots and I apologize if the repetitive feeling soured your viewing experience somewhat. I will remember not to do it again in my future posts.

yes, i get what you mean by having the photos to show and share.. very different from describing by word.

my suggestion is to have a starting introductory post in land/cityscapes and travel, post the "nice" photos that you think are the cream of the crop, then have a link to the "quantity" approach ones, maybe start a separate thread in travel section. i am sure no one will begrudge the so-called "double posting" since it is done with sharing spirit and keeping the forum clean.. then you get the best of both worlds!

anyways, just a suggestion. cheers!

BTW fellower CSers, I have more maps if you need them. And if you have any questions and/or need tips/advice for Huangshan, please post them here or drop me a PM. I'll do my best to help out.

Very nice shot!! It's makes me recall the winter trip early this year... Will be sharing mine to yours later.

Thanks skygtr. Please do share yours. Huangshan weather is so unpredictable that almost everyone's shots are very different. I await eagerly.

As per night86mare's suggestion, I've streamlined the thread, cut down the pictures, reduced the picture sizes and swap out some pics in favor of artistic quality. Still, there are 20+ pictures in this thread. Enjoy!

If you want to see bigger or more pics please feel free to check out my Flickr site:

More pics are added as they get processed. Tons of backlog.

A couple of pics to add, seeing that there are no pics on Page 2 and some brothers are asking for more.

A. View of Lotus Peak (莲花峰) from Turtle Peak (鳌鱼峰). Lotus peak has the highest elevation in Huangshan (1864m) and is accessible by foot. However, it is currently closed for conservation. I am not sure how long it will be closed. The stone railings were just built last year after numerous accidents over the years.

B. Ladder on the clouds (百步云梯) is the bottleneck that connects the front mountain (前山) and back mountain (后山). It is made up of over a hundred steps carved into a crack of a huge steep rock.

Nice series, thanks for sharing daredevil123

Your pictures reminded me of my trip to Huangshan in 2005 where my friend and I were stopped by 公安 claiming that our driver wasn't registered. They treated us well and explained to us that only registered drivers can ferry tourists into Huangshan scenic area. We were immediately transferred to our hotel (at the foot of huangshan) after we signed the testimony.

We spent a good 3 hours walking up, think we took the qian shan route. Saw a lot of porters carrying all sorts of supplies up and down the hill. One of them even carried a BATHTUB. I salute them!!! And they climb real fast...:embrass:

thanks for the memories, daredevil123

You're welcome iamracoon!

We did not see many porters this trip. I saw 2 workmen carrying replacement stone slabs for walkway repair. They tied it to a bamboo and each had an end of that bamboo on their sholder. That thing must weigh at least 70-80 kg. I also saw a couple of dudes carrying mineral water up but they are actually selling them to tourists on the way up. It seems actual porters have disappeared from view. Most of the routes we are walking on are fairly new, making me think that the authorities separated the routes between tourists and porters. I've heard that even trash were first steamed then compressed and finally carried down the mountain via the same porters who delivered the supplies up the mountain.

For folks planning to go, please note that only local or registered drivers can drive their vehicles through the main Huangshan Scenic Area gate. So the only way up into the Cable Car stations is via public bus, taxi or local private cars for hire. Or you can walk, which I do not recommend as it was a 30 minute drive up. Save your strength for the actual mountain hike itself. The cost up to Yungu or Ci-an-ge stations are now 50-60 rmb each way via taxi or private car. Bus is 13 rmb per pax each way. So parties of 4 or more it makes more sense to take a cab or car up or down. Thing is, when coming down, taxis are scarce. We waited for around 20 minutes before we got one. Best is if you kept numbers of drivers you hired when going up. Our driver was otherwise engaged so we had to wait for a cab coming down.

Hi Daredevil, these are awesome pics. Must imagined the pains you went through. I also did my first tour of China 2 weeks ago and it was an eye opener. Changed my perception of China immediately and now I am very eager to do more China trips. Unfortunately, mine was a packaged tour so we were pampered all the way. :D PLease post more. Thanks for sharing.
