HTC Desire problem

I've had my Desire for 7 months now and the issue started around March. I'm using 2.2, unrooted. The phone would just turn off by itself and wouldn't turn on unless you open the back cover and remove and place the battery back. I don't think its related to usage as the it happens even when the phone is idle. It's more horrible when you're using it. I browse often, not much into games. By the way, I haven't reset my phone to dafault factory settings, cos it didn't helped anyway according to some forums.

I've been reading forums and most likely the culprit is the motherboard. But some still confirms that replacing the MB didn't helped much. From the forums I've read, HTC on the average repairs a unit for about a 2 weeks to a month (includes shipping). I don't think I can wait that long, as I don't have a backup phone :(

I would like to know if any fellow CSers are having problem or had their MB replaced? How long did it take?

My Samsung Galaxy Spica occasionally has this exact same problem, but it usually occurs after I install a custom ROM, in which case either re-rooting the phone or installing another custom ROM would fix the problem. Not sure if it's the MB problem, but I've never sent my phone to the service centre and it's still working fine. Doesn't have the problem now.

It's happened to me before when I was on a call (luckily it was only with a friend), but whatever you do, do it quick. You don't want your phone to shut off on you while you're on the phone with your boss.

i believe the screen freeze in its sleeping stage, not really turned off, that why you need to remove and reinsert the battery. Yes spica has this problem, especially so if one try to undervolt it.

Im using the Desire HD since dec 2010 and twice encountered restarts...other than that,no probs...

luckily, I never had a problem while having a call. some desire owners had their MB replaced. unfortunately for some who had the MB replaced, they are still having the same problem but not too often

when a screen freezes, you can't even scroll nor use any buttons but you can still see the desktop right? mine's completely off :(

HTC should take this seriously, else they will lose the market :nono:

Nop, you can't if the phone froze during sleep mode aka screen off state

HTC normally takes a week to fix things and they deliver right to your house/office. Bring it there for a fix.

ok thanks! hopefully they can permanently fix my phone *fingers crossed*

Same thing happened to my friend's desire. Sent to fix as still under warranty but the problem came back after 1-2 weeks. Sent in to repair again. This time the customer service officer said that if they can't fix it within 3 times they will replace with a new one. After it was fixed the 2nd time all was well.

HTC does door to door collection and delivery for free so its quite convenient. You can ask for a temporary phone from them if you need 1.

My HTC desire keeps giving me problems as well. I would suddenly get mis call alerts (Singtel) SMS and quite frequently, but my screen still says full reception. Also, my screen tends to freeze and programs hang. My brother's have programs hang and screen freeze problem as well. My colleague's is the no reception problem. All 3 units are launch sets so they are about 11 months old.

My conclusion is there shd be some sort of manufacturing problem with the HTC unit. So, I couldnt be bothered to repair it and changed to Xperia Arc

Try iphone fast and stable :)

A desire user as well. Unrooted. Never had the issue.

But I had a minor sound glitch earlier n HTC serviced it wonderfully. Picked up my phone at my convenience, n delivered back to me.

Nope and nope.

I prefer not to be locked in to the Apple environment, and I don't want my phone tracking and recording my location every second and storing the data in an unsecured location accessible to all applications.

And the concept of needing to connect a phone to a PC just so you can use it is beyond ridiculous.

so all I have to do is call them and arrange a pickup? Sounds convenient. Looks like the service here in SG in quite good unlike the one's I've read (mostly US)

I have no reception problem (Starhub). But I also read about the reception issue. Since warranty is about to expire, why don't you send it to HTC asap? Ahh you also thinking about Experia arc, very tempting indeed hehe ;)

can you tell me what was repaired? If they can provide a temporary phone, then that'll be great!

To everyone who has this problem:
One reason would be because the screen was off for a long period, so did Android, and thus the power controller within the phone cut power to the RAM (in an effort to save battery life?). However the power to internal mem still isn't cut off. When there is no power going to the RAM, all data will be lost (at least on the RAM). When you turn on the screen again, the reaction time is very slow to re-copy all the required Android system files to the RAM. Thus you seem to get the hanged screen.

i don't think so, coz it happens frequently when the phone is in use. but it also happens when the phone is idle.

Update: I sent my phone to HTC last 4/28 and I just got the phone today although I was told that it may take a week to repair. The service here in SG is good :) anyway, the main board was replaced per report. I am re-installing my apps now and the phone will undergo stress test ;)
