How to Stop an Elderly from Feeding Pets

yanyewkay: I understand how you feel. But I guess I won't back down towards this attitude. The mom used to feed her mountains of food when my dog barks, she told the maid that dog hungry that's why bark. I nearly wanted to tell the mom off saying when baby cry all the time its not always hungry but maybe they wet their pants? Don't understand elderly at times.
Once I caught the mom feeding my dog after the maid fed the dog dinner, I rushed in and she just told me she haven't eat. I took the food away from her hand and tell her straight that you saw the maid feeding don't you and now you claimed you didn't know. She knows I'm mad but she just kept quiet then went to watch tv.
At times she can't stand the dog being close to me cos wherever I go my dog will follow even when I bathe, she will walk into the room and ask mydog to keep going out when my dog don't want at times.

She's very healthy and hyper now but the main issue is my bf's mom has been feeding her human food when I am not around. The maid told the mom the consequences of the dog eating those, she just smiled and continued feeding.

This has happened a few times already. Was away on a trip for the past few days, and my dog ballooned when I saw her. Asked the maid what happen and realised that my bf's mom has been feeding her curry and spicy chips. I was so angry last night and I thought of putting her at groomers' place over the weekend and tell the mom that the dog is in hospital due to all the food poisoning with the x-ray that found undigested curry and chips. See what she has got to say.

What can I do?

You have to harden your heart this time and tell his mom to feed it properly lor. I have a cat at home, but luckily he is quite picky on food. He only eats fish and drinks milk and occasionally eats some prawn crackers. Old people need usually need some persuasion because during their time they have been feeding stray dogs and cats human foods and it is usually a way of life during the kampong days.

why nobody suggest training the dog to reject curry and titbits . u shld use hard tactics like cane her if she eat. a little pain now is better than a trip to the vet rite?

Furthermore, it won't strain your family ties and your bf's mum just recovered from stroke...

as i know that guard dog are train to reject food given by stranger!

Sent my gal to the groomers place over the weekend and she will be back tomorrow evening. Spoken to the mother about the matter and she say sorry like a lil kid. Then tell me it won't happen again (which I doubt is true).
We made a pact not to feed the dog again and tell her in front of the maid too that if ever she were to feed the dog, the maid has got the right to take the dog away from her till she learns.
Hope it really helps, told the mom that last time 3 days in hospital is 1k plus this time 5-6 days not sure how much then tell her all the horro things lo.
Then she shed tears say the dog very ke lian.

hmm.. another way that a friend tried.. he printed an official looking letter and place into an envelope went home, pretend to open up the letter and told his mum he got a letter of inquiry from SPCA saying the pet hospital informed them about repeated sickness of his dog
since his mum couldnt read english he managed to get away with it

his mum usually likes to feed the dog junk food, then end up his dog at times keep burping and.. weird poo =.=

The next time the dog is about to puke or crap... just bring the dog to her room... and leave the mess there... She'll learn very quickly after than....

The reason she doesn't get it... is because there is no disruption or inconveniences to her life. Leave that puke right in the middle of the room... let her step in it. They need gentle reminders like that and nothing is as effective as cold puke between your toes...

Since getting the dog is his idea, get the dog to puke in his shoes too... If it's his mother it's time to step up to the plate and be the man.

Just Stop over overfeeding the dog.

Alternatively... feed the mother... Yup keep feeding her everything and when she is full, buy her KFC.

Of course... my methods are extreme so please think twice... you could be kicked out of the house...

in my previous job, there was a old lady operator who feed the cats in the industrial flats which the company i work for is housed. the entire department tried talking to her, but she just wouldnt listen. even when her boss threaten to issue warning letter, she still feed the cats.

some in her house, keep feeding the stray cats until they practically went to live near her house, until her daughter refuse to bring the grand-children to visit her during SARS, which, she still feeds the stray cats.

in the end, everybody gave up.:sweat:

Sometimes, there are reasons why they do that. One of the reasons is that they rather feed animals than humans cos their own children betrayed them after they grew up. They roam on the streets and do weird things.

Also, they feel happy when the animals come brush against them. It brings a nice warmth feel of appreciation which they cannot receive from humans of modern generations.

When have we thanked our parents for bringing us up?

Genuine strays (as opposed to abandoned pets) tend to be street smart and eke out a meagre living somehow. Of course it is nice to feed them, but if you're not careful the result of that is more breeding, and more strays, and more suffering.

An easy thing that almost everyone can do is to adopt a stray (commiting to an animal is definitely a more charitable act than just throwing some food at it) and have it sterilised. Plenty of dogs/cats around there looking for a home, and thousands being put down anually because there are not enough people willing to adopt, plus those weirdos that believe S'pore should belong to humans/cars only, and all animals have to be either kept in the zoo or extincted. (And despite this, people are still insisting on commercial "branded/pedigreed" pets, resulting in commercial breeders pumping out more of them, a certain number of which are going to be abandoned...)

If for whatever reason you cannot keep a pet, you can always support groups that sterilise and release strays. Or volunteer for the animal rescue organisation of your choice.

Fetched my dog back home and am happy that she's back to her lean and fit size. The mother spoke to the maid yesterday that she will not feed baby again cos "medical bills v expensive." Yesterday me and my bf told her its $2k so better don't play play.

yea they walked her everyday and let her play around with other dogs. Am happy that she's back to her normal size actually.

evidently not alot of csers here...what over feed the mother and all that? everyone is talking about this old lady as if she's just some thing, not a person...basket you're talking about someone's mother! show some respect... what if i ill treat your mom/dad? surely you would be angry too..unless you don't give a damn about them...if they were alcoholic/chronic gamblers or abusive parents then i have nothing to say, but generally most are not! years of sacrifice and love to bring you up...at least talk some sense instead of rubbish like suggesting to someone to ill treat another human!

while yes, i'm sad to hear of the dog's condition..how can you put it above a human life, especially one that has brought you up..is beyond me...a human life is more precious than any animal could be... how can singaporeans be so damn heartless and forget that? even if some of the posters meant that in jest, it's in bad taste....

it seems like she wants attention and love..and the ability to show love in return..which is why she's over feeding the dog...her way of affection...and naturally she's jealous that the dog doesn't seem to return it when ts is around...

how about the TS and the bf spend more time and show more love towards the mother instead?

I would like to say that the mother did not bring me up. I can see where you're coming from but a dog's life is also precious just like human.
I seldom head out and are home mostly to acompany both the mother and my dog after work or even aft class. Even cancelled my trainings and all and I only arrange for certain trainings to be done when the mom and the maid went house on a Sunday morn.
