how to get sun light bokeh?

wah thanks guys

i finally know what that is called liao~
cos was looking high and low for the correct word for it.

so cheap lens and dirty filter helps got it~! :bsmilie:
saw edutilos mentioning lomo, anyone know if lensbaby is consider a lens that will provide such effect?

another silly question (since nowadays is always cloudy.. so cant really do testing myself)
you most likely can't see the lens flare through the view finder right?

Yes, you can see it through the viewfinder.

almost every half-decent lens review out there will test for lens flare. Just do a search. You could even google "what lens has the best flare"

Hi. I do this a lot. Here's a couple of pointers for you.

1. Shoot in the late afternoon and without the lens hood.
2. Point towards the sun.
3. AF would work sometimes, but best bet would be anticipating where your subject will be and going MF.
4. Squint while looking through the VF. Not doing so will hurt your eyes if the sun's too bright.
5. Hide the sunlight behind your subject first. This is so you can protect your eyes and to try if AF would work. You can also hide it in the edges of your frame or building structures for a different approach.
6. Move your cam around slowly until you can almost see nothing but bright light on your VF.
7. I use A-Mode so that I get different exposures and then pick which one's best afterwards. Going burst mode would also help. Never tried other methods but this one works for me.
8. The lens doesn't have to be cheap to get this kind of effect.

Now if you want aperture orbing it'll help if you use cheap filters to have as much reflection bouncing around inside your lens. The orbs that you will see in your VF is more often than not the output you will get. You can actually see the orbs moving as you sway your camera around, it's cute. This follows the same steps as above.

I'll post some examples later when I get home.

Hope this helps. :)

You can also get the same effects in Adobe Photoshop
or Corel Photopaint.

actually the light trail effect is more pronounce when u have an object partially blocking the sun. eg, the head of your model, shooting the sun thru the leaves of a plant.

I love this thread! Always wanted to know how it's done

hi there,

I would like to ask.
may i know wat is this sunlight reflection call? is it call sunlight bokeh or sunlight trail? :dunno:

Not thati t's more pronounced la...

Just that if you don't do that you will usually blow everything out..

"what lens has the best flare":bsmilie:

It should be 'WORST' lens flare :bsmilie:

Very nice. I remember the iPhone guys on flickr doing the same thing. Goes to show that you can do it with any cam or lens.

any low quality lens that flares easily:bsmilie:

but u need sunset/rise. the sun angle is lowest then. easiest to shoot
