How to fight mosquitos?

Lately, there's been too many mosquitos flying around sucking me dry. Do you guys have any good recipe to fight them?

I bought the electrical Mortien insect repellent but it didn't work. Help!

You bought the liquid bottle one??? that works for me.
But will have to plug in 10mins to be effective.

There's a couple of ways as mentioned by fellow CSers. Perhaps you can consider natural alternatives. Try using citronella, it exisits naturally in some plants and is well known to be an organic insect repellent. Having a bunch of lemon grass can help or you can use commercially available citronella sprays or candles. For the boys who serve NS or reservist, and hate SAF insect repellent and spray ons, consider getting a citronella patch. You can get it at any pharmacy. The patch will be effective for 12 ~ 24 hours.

Having a UV insect repellent lamp doesn't help with mosquitoes as they are not attracted to UV. They're are attracted to carbon dioxide emissions, eg, your breath, your body heat and other chemicals emissions from your body thru your skin.

well said.. insect repllents aren't really "repllents" they just hide your body heat or 'chemical' emmissions so the mossies can't detect you.

My best weapon against mossies? My 2 palms, keen eyesights and a good ear...bZzzzzzzZZ..*PIAK*

Just keep your room clean. Don't have any dark clothes ard and mosquito wouldn't be having any place to hide and attack u. Curtain n clothes hanging on the hook is the best place for them to hide. Try to spray insectiside at the curtain n also, "disturb" the clothes and the mosquito will be out for you to kill.

Here's a tip, given by my colleague (when I was working in Maldives). Put some water in a white dinner plate and add a few drops of Lemon Fresh dish detergent. I normally squeeze a little bit more. Set the dish wherever you want. The mosquitoes will flock to it and die soon after drinking the detergent/water mixture.

It works in the Maldives & Sri Lanka, haven't try in Singapore yet though. You can give it a try and let me know if it works.

I believe the idea behind it..

Is that when the mosquito approach the dish of water to lay eggs, the detergent in the water will somehow kill it, either by contact or by consumption.

Keeping the house clean and getting rid of still water ard the house, drains, potted plants..etc is one of the steps.
If you suspect a nearby drain or construction site is the cause of your problems, contact the Town Council people to fog the area.
(We complained to them and lately the fogging frequency increased)

I'm definitely going to try all of the solutions tonight. The mosquitos in my area are giving me sleepless nights.

For example, I was going to sleep at approx. 2am, when I heard a mosquito buss past my ear (do they just purposely do that to piss you off?). I woke up, applied repellent on a piece of paper, and fanned it in the obsecure corners.

When it came out, I smacked it right there.

Just when I was about to go back to sleep.... Another one buzzed past again. And the air-con was on all the while... :angry:

I just killed 3 of them and still can see another one flying pass right in front of me! :angry: I've placed the water + detergent since morning. seems like they don't drink them.

i'm not sure they drink from it... i think they get enough liquid from the blood they take out of you already..

maybe the dish is there in the event they want to breed, and lay eggs in there. and the babies then doesn't make it...
