Safest is to buy from reputable shop with receipt.

my friend bought one from overseas .. shows 4GB when i check using PC, but after i format .. it shows 61MB!!

Had a bad experience buying a Sandisk III 1 Gb sd card from a shop in Lo Hu, Shenzhen. The item came in all its packaging, even tested once on the computer there and its ok then. Flew back to singapore with the purchase and tested the card again, shot 2 pics and then it read error. Thereafter canot work any more.

Moral of the story- buy local and fr a reputable shop. insist on a 1 for 1 exchange policy. (most shops will agree to this condition for a short period of time unless its a fake card)

for a few brands, you can go to their website and do a verification. I know kingston have such service, not sure about the other brands tho.

I purchased one 2GB flash drive from someone in Singapore who brought in from China. It shows 2GB after format and after transfer 2 files, it became dead. Thereafter the PC cannot recognize the drive.

This is why I have no confident on purchase memory cards/drive imported by individuals from China. I would purchase from the shop I frequently purchase. The cost may be a higher but at least I can return the faulty goods than to have them written off.

:)

i agree.. all these media cards, you cant tell what u get.. what u want is reliability.. better to buy local, pay a teeny weeny bit more $$$, and get one that doesn't corrupt just after you shot that once-in-a-lifetime pix.. :D

The only way to assure you are getting the real mccoy is to buy from a reputable retailer. When a deal is too good to be true, it generally is.

I have yet to hear someone getting a deeply discounted memory card not regretting it. Worse, some of them fake ones are not even that deeply discounted.

If you don't know the store, do not trust the store, pass.

Those cards that are selling for a song on ebay are 101% fake. Just from any reputable shop in Singapore that offers one-for-one exchange, and you will be fine. From what I read, most pirates will pirate the more popular brands like Sandisk and Kingston. So, I have heard of fake Sandisk (all the time) and Kingston (sometimes) cards. But I have never heard of fake Lexar and some other brands.

Saw alot when i was there as well.
I never buy cos.. come on
Even in SG there is an influx of fake cards..
do u expect to buy real ones in china :bsmilie:

But on a serious note, pay careful attention you can see that the Kingston or scandisk fonts on the card label usually looks funny. If you are lucky enough, you might even get a spelling mistake ;)

Do a search on the web, there's usually guides on how to tell a fake from real

But of course take everything with a pinch of salt, and don't go berserk because someone wrote a scam article to sabo you to punch the shopowner when it's original anw. =D

anything can be fake in china, including eggs ;p
