Hi! all. may i know is there a way to check whether the lense i'm interested is compatible with my camera? Mine is Nikon D5000. i read online about full frame & cropped frame & there may be vignetting issues if its not compatible. is this true? i'm interested in Tamron's 18-270mm or Sigma's 28-300mm wondering if both will fit my cam.

Hi Wolvie, is the question, I believe that this is your question. Whether full frame lenses will fit your Nikon D5000(which is a crop body). Right?
Ok, there isn't exactly a 'full frame lens' but a lens that fits on a cropped body may not be compatible with the full frame bodies due to some stuff which I myself am not tooooo sure. Vignetting will most probably occur on the full frame body but not yours as the wide end of the lens would most probably be 'eaten up' by the crop factor of your body. Also, let's say, 18mm on the tamron on a 1.5 crop factor body it will have a final 27mm. So it's not as wide. Hmmm I guess that's it. If you want to know whether it will fit or is it compatible ask before buying. I can't comment on the the 2 lenses that you are about to buy because I am a Canon user, but basicalllly that's about it.
Vignette will onli occur when you fit a dx (cropped) lens on a full frame camera. Nikon d5k isn't a full frame so neh. It's definitely compatible. However, i'm not sure if af will work with it since i'm too lazy to google whether the 2 lenses you mentioned has built-in motor.:dunno:
So in short, yes they are compatible(UNLESS THEY ARE NOT NIKON MOUNT) but whether it will af, you have to research yourself.

to which I answer: If they are with the Nikon-mount, YES, they will fit your camera.
I'm not gonna go into auto-focus, etc...

I don't use this model, but I believe the main thing to watch out for is that not all lenses that are made for Nikon cameras can be used with full functionality. Because the D5000 does not have an AF motor in the body, to autofocus, you must use lenses with AF motor built into the lens. Check your manual.

Since u already locked down to few interested lens, go & google their specs or read up their brochures online.. it usually state the camera compatibility, mount & whether the lens comes w/ a motor by itself..

The only modern Nikon F mount lenses that won't "fit" are the PC-E lenses which cost several more times than your D5000 already.
And yes, both lenses you have mentioned will "fit" your camera if they are made for Nikon cameras. Also, you will not have any serious vignetting issues (unless it's a terrible lens) with full-frame lenses nor DX lenses.

hehhee yes of course auto-focus seems to be the main concern when buying lenses for a Nikon body like D40/60/3000/5000...
i was just getting straight to the point. TS asked if the lenses will fit, to which I answered: YES.
There was no question about whether they will work with full functionality...

D5K can fit all nikon mount including F-mount if I'm not wrong...pls correct me if wrong
when you see the lens starts from say 28-300mm..immediately u shd know this lens is meant for a full frame..when mount onto your crop sensor, ur field of view becomes 1.5X28mm at minimum...vignetting will nt be a prob unless the lens is super super lousily built..haha...
i guess if you are unsure, it's better to buy the 18-270mm coz you might get so frustrated using 28-300 when you wana focus something at 1m away...
and yup, the biggest concern when buying lens for D5k shd always be - "is there built in motor in the lens?":think:

Your Nikon D5000 uses a cropped frame sensor (aka DX format). To auto-focus, the D5000 will need lenses that has a built-in motor.
The Tamron 18-270 was designed for DX/APS-C format in mind. Ask for Nikon mount version with built-in motor.
The Sigma 28-300 was designed for full frame format in mind but will also work with DX/APS-C format cameras. However, from the website, Sigma states that it will not auto-focus on the D5000.
