It's synergized, so it must be good... hehhe... man, haven't seen that word used since some old management consultants presentations or some old dot com business plans.

Interesting development. Looking a the back of it - http://a.img-dpreview.com/news/0809/Leica/LEICA_S2_back_001.jpg - it's shape reminds me of my toaster, except my toaster is shiny stainless steel.

S1 is 36MM X 36MM, use R lens and visolex lens, 24mp at 1997, ugly, now only 3K-4K USD

S2 is 30MM X 45MM, use new S lens (also can use R lens and Visoflex lens) 37.5mp at 2008, 30-40K USD


R lens can cover 48mm x 48mm
visoflex can support 92mm x 92mm

The entry level Mamiya ZD with body and lens will set you back by about US$10K. For Phase One back 22MP, with body and standard lens, this combo will cost just over US$20K. Therefore, given it is a Leica, US$20K+ sounds reasonable. If you need 39MP, the Phase One will cost over US$30K. A week ago I received an email from the local Hasselblad's agent offering the HDII-31 Kit for SG$30K. This was very tempting, but I can buy the same kit for US$17K in the US.

Since I am a R user as well, I will be anxiously waiting for the launch of the R10.

but its a new system therefore how stable it is, how far Leica will maintain this line or even if it will take off is questionable. I will very much like to see the performance and the lens offered and the price of course. but at 37mp, Very soon the Japanese will catch up and at a freakish affordable price. Its a matter of time. :dunno: The mp "barrier" is breaking as we can see.... Medium format Canon anyone?

highly unlikely canon will come out with a medium format. firstly, they have never ventured into it since film days. secondly, during an interview with the head honcho here, they seem pretty happy with how the 35mm digital format has drawn users away from medium format.
 

btw the s2 uses a kodak sensor right?

Very interesting that Leica is taking this route. However, at the estimated price point (likely to be somewhere in the medium format territory) many users will be demanding the type of service from Leica (such as loaner bodies in 24 hours when the one they have is problematic) that will quite a chellenge
