Newb to DSLR.

1670 + 30 + 60 + 70 + 30...

Now i knw why photography is an expensive pastime.
Used to disagree with everyone else that said that....

Let me have the honour. But, must have lots of cash in it. :bsmilie:

Well, if you can earn back whatever you've spend for your equipments. That's OK...;p

I think the amount spent of photography must be proportional to one's income. It's alright to BBB as long as you can afford it! Just don't go borrow from "Ah Long" can already!

lol! must hurry hor. if not all money gone into feeding the virus liou. lol.
btw, everytime my fren and i went to mscolor, we would joke with florence that the water she served us got "poison". lol. drink that water sure want to buy something de. hhahah.

I started by telling myself I can do it, then i go on to recording the gears I have, I continue on to writing how much each gear cost.
In the end I just deleted away notepad file... I CANNOT TAKE IT!!! ITS TOOOOOO MUCH!!!!! If this goes on, I might not be even able to afford rat poison :bheart:

Well, I'm glad I took out some money to buy equipment while the market was still ok last year... The equipment I've bought and sold over the last year broke me even whilst those in the stock market gave me a negative return...

This thread is way overdue. Those that voted earlier (2002) would have spent a lot more into the hobby.

Ya quite true, I voted when I just join the forum. that time, my spending is like 3k... now....

Pls donate rat poison to me, I might not be able to afford it

better get more rat poison or detergent...
somemore SITEX '08 coming at the end of the months...
sure thing BBB virus spread like hell.. :p

don't count.
it is your hobby.
at one time, your passion.
for some of us, cool already.

look at it this way, if you did not spend the time on this hobby, maybe you will go into other hobbies....
like going to Genting casino often, Kranji turf club, or other expensive hobbies
the worst one is the so called addiction to harmful substances aka party drugs...

these will destroy you.

photography is harmless.
it is not that expensive.

what about people who change cars often.

Lastly, don't anyhow "invest" in dubious financial instruments

Hmm.. seeing all the list of equipment that the fellow CSers... have purchased... always make me ponder if I have make the right choice to start with a prosumer camera (Panasonic DMC-FZ50) instead of a dslr.... :)

its expensive.. esp for the start where probably u have a kit lens.. then u might want a fast lens... then UWA and other assortment of lens.... tripod.. bag... controller.. cards... suddenly the dry cabinet need to change also as the inventory grows... i'm only doing it as a hobby... but i guess it helps me to have something to look forward to everytime when i step out with camera... it takes my mind off things and probably as a healthy past time... i feel that its worth it... when someone came to u to say, 'hey thats a nice shot!'... probably u will think.. thats like yah... 1 out of 500 shots probably.. but still its worth it.. some people say its not the equipment that makes a person skilled... but for me.. unfortunately i am not a born photographer with a great eye for composition... so no choice have to need some assortments of stuff in order to know which type of photography i can do best... hopefully one day i will only need 1 lens and 1 body to do the style i like... haha.. (think 'tang ku ku')

:bsmilie: that's right. Many of my colleagues n myself have lost quite a bit in these markets, even if its on paper value. To think the money could have been better spent to buy that "dream lens"

I suppose at the end of every year when the bonuses start coming, there is the urge to reward ourselves with something we like. And if photography is our hobby, it becomes natural that some of that money will be spent each year buying new gear.

Its like never enough. I thought I would be happy once I have that do-all "zoom" lens, or that flash light. But I go on realising that there are better stufff that can have better image quality, range, feel etc... If I ask myself, there would be at least 6-7 more gears that I would like to have (not need, like to have). Each will cost a few $k. And if i still stick on to buying one piece per year with each bonus, in less than 10 years i will join the $15k rank:o

May this never happen:sweat:

IF, supposing I have a set amount of funds of up to $150,000.00
will I be able to pucrhase as follows:

Based on Canon
> 2 pcs EOS 1Ds MkIII bodies
> 2 high end canon speedlights
> entire canon lens range
> comprehensive studio lightings & accesories with backdrops
> large dry cabinet for all bodies and lenses

Based on Nikon
>> as above but which highest body? <<

any advice on the above much appeciated.

Well, if you have no problem spending the entire amount mentioned above that makes you happy. Why not. But, the comprehensive studio lightings & accesories with backdrops will set you back around 30k - 50k depending on which lighting system you will be purchasing. Not to mention, you will also need a floor space no less than 10mx14m & 5m high ceiling in order to set up a studio.
Anyway, have fun & cheers.:)
