How Models really feel about most of the photographers at It/Car Shows.

It's a usual bunch of twits going around every damned exhibition that indirectly stain the image of photographers.

You could make a rogues' gallery out of their grinning faces.

that's why sometimes i dunno whether to tell pple i'm a photographer or not... machiam we got bad name like that.

u know it's like:

"wat do you do?"

"i'm a photographer"

"oh u shoot girls at shows? that's cool... then your full time job leh?"

"..."

for me...

"heard you are a freelance cameraman"

"eh.. photographer actually"

*silence*

"shoot wedding got discount or not?"

"..."

I think to be fair, we can't make a sweeping statement about those photogs who loves to shoot models at shows or exhibition.

What I think the purpose of this thread serves, is to remind us that if and whenever we go out there and shoot these show/exhibition models, we have to be mindful of what we are doing and hence not to harm these girls in anyway, and tranish our hobby and our reputation as a result of our actions.

Is this a direct challenge to me? i know school holidays now so borne to have lots of nonsense from kids. Yr opinion is not related to photography, but the photographers in CS who shoot models in motor shows, BBT, Sitex, etc. Just becos a few of yr so called Female model friends said they hate those photographers, does it means every photographers who shoot in these events are Hum Sup lor?

And strangly non of the models who are also CSer came in here to support his claims.

DeSwitch can't you read? I said the ones who go to MotorShow/It Show to shoot the models in weird positions or with adsurb requests are the ones who are humsup and have a problem.

In what way is my question not related to photography when it involves errant photographers? I'm trying to point out a message here, not waste bandwidth.

And whats your issue of the school holidays. I'm still having school now. Do not assume all students are like what you assume.

Models have not come out to support me, mainly bacause they can't due to contractual obligations to their companies. But many in this thread has already come out to state clearly that their female model friends often have had comments like that. So whats your problem? You can't read right?

Nah, now my concern is not about reaching the wonderful era of knights in shining armour with the fair maidens of distress, now, I'm just voicing an opinion here relating to photography, and a rightful one in my honest opinion after careful consideration, and some bum come and say I'm wasting bandwidth. As if asking about RAM, a housing thread aint wasting bandwidth. And seems like he's not replying anymore, what a bum, wasteful of bandwidth indeed!

If this statement did not directly challenge me, den i offer my apologies, else i demand an apology from you. Yeah, if you think i cant read den i really think you cant write either. I was trying not to reply to this tread but you opened a challenge asking me to reply. I cant find any word or meaning related to this line "I said the ones who go to MotorShow/It Show to shoot the models in weird positions" in your above reply.

Heh these stories would slowly get circulated - even if the bunch think they are well liked by models cos they know who and who, its still the same - stories continue to be spread.

I posted somewhere else about a story I heard where a model observed how come a photographer (with his friends) monopolise her for 10 minutes during an event, effectively turning it into his own private mini model shoot.

Androo's comment sounds suspiciously like the same gang I heard about. :)

sad to say, i observed this when i was there shooting the recent motorshow.
one guy was so demanding and was asking the model to do lots of poses which i can tell she's not willing to do so.
:(

i always believe in shooting them 'as is'.
they are not engaged to pose specially for you.

work at the recent commex at one of the camera booth, and was one of the few guys that are standing near the models to do product explanation, and when we saw a famous group of dslr owners (i wouldnt call them photographers) guess what they said? : "wah... it's them again, dont know wanna come here how many times, request this and that, then wanna take photo with us never mind, still stand so close.."

these dslr owners really need to reflect on their behaviour, further more if the models are not very pretty, they'll grumble why the standard drop so much and stuff. if you really find them unattractive, then why take their pics in the first place?

Unfortunately 'some' photographers out there had already done that. :(

In general most of the photogs at these kinda shows are well behaved and do not have ill intentions...its just a few "black sheep" in wolf's clothing (i.e. wielding (D)SLRs masquerading as photogs) who have brought down the reputation of photogs in general. Different people have different reasons for shooting models so its hard to prove if one is shooting merely out of interest or passion in photography or because of a more sinister agenda. When you approach a model with a camera at such events, regardless of who you are, you become one with the 'faceless' crowd of photographers, so its easier to get away with anonymity, hence such 'perverts' become bolder in asking the model to pose in lewd positions or to 'zoom in' on certain areas etc.

I think its important to observe the unwritten rules of photographers' etiquette when you are out shooting regardless of whether its a paid shoot or at a motorshow/exhibition. i.e show some basic courtesy and respect to your subjects, e.g asking for permission to shoot, remain at a respectable distance from the subject and not shove the camera up the face, or go too close, or even touch or put your arm around the model while your friend shoots a pic for you (yes I've seen this happen before quite a few times!) etc. A lot of photographers tend to blatantly forget these basic rules and just fire away etc. without giving a thought. :sweatsm:

old idea have to flow out, new ones hav to flown in. lets have a more open and better understanding society;)

Yeah.. think we're talking about the same group. To them it's okie to ask the model cause they know the models well (or they think they know the models well??), had model friends who told me they dont like them at all but no choice since they're in this business and those dslr owners were telling everyone that "Oh, they're my friends, i know them well.."

As such i've hear some ppl from some credit card booth talking out loud when they saw what's happening to the booth beside them :"see those idiots ppl always bring dslr to this knida of show to take girls only!" Really hurtful words to hear and feel sorry for those ppl who are shooting the models for event coverage for job purpose..

yea..I hate it when people call me a cameraman....

Haha... why? The girls at the show are called showgirls... the guy behind the camera is called the cameraman lor...

Pay be $5 and you can call me whatever you want. :bsmilie:

well.. cameraman is a very layman term and dont sound nice at all, how you'll feel if you're a photographer, and ppl call you a camera man, or a professional racer and ppl call you driver?

on this topic of camera man, i was ever asked by an ex boss of mine what title i wanted on my name card, and as a joke i said, u can put janitor there for all i care, as long as u pay me properly and on time!

but of course business associates would not wanna talk to a janitor, so i had to settle for finance manager....

i get referred to as cameraman many times, but i mean, the customer is paying me quite alot to shoot the wedding, and the images warrant that kind of price, couple is happy, it doesn't really matter that they didn't get the term right....

and.. er anyone correct me if i'm wrong... cameramen are those than handle film rite? as in film video... in production sets.. then alongside them they have cam assistant 1 2 and 3...? my FSV friend told me all the different "designations" on a production set once.. sounded confusing to me. but i never thot that "cameraman" was derogratory. it's just a term....

i'd say most pple just use the wrong word sometimes, no harm meant....

my personal opinons. I bought my DSLR to an IT show ONCE but was too embarassed to take it out to shoot the models :)

dunno leh, feel kind of weird shooting models in IT show, especially since I was alone. Maybe if I was in a group I will feel more courageuos. Anyway I only shoot my wife only lah... see no point in getting/paying for another model when I have a very willing one at home :) free somemore
