how high is high ISO?

Just joined this thread, sorry Gentlemen...
For my body, I feel 1600 is still ok, 3200 would be high already as the noise is more apparent to my.
My humble opinion.

I'm a D300 user. I'd say anything above 800 is considered high. But the highest ISO I can to go would be 1600, anything above that just gets too much noise.. And yes I usually do print up to 8RW size photos.

If speaking strictly on noise, ISO800 is high for me, because my D70 is horribly noisy by today's standards.

But i usually go for correct exposure, regardless of iso used.

I switched my in-cam noise reduction to high and shot ISO800 with my 500D. I think it's already too noisy for me.

sometimes noise does special effect on a photo.

A700 - anything higher than ISO 1600 (actually i can go above but must expose properly or noise will appear in the dark areas)
A850 - anything above ISO 3200

actually for A700 and A850, if i properly expose the pics, the noise are well-controlled too, especially after all the version upgrades and techniques...

As an earlier poster mentioned... depends on a few factors:

Sensor size / Megapixel
Lighting/ situation
Final viewing medium / audience.

A larger MP means you can push ISO a little higher with same quality. IE a 3.2 MP camera usually dies at 400 ISO but a 10MP usually is fine at 800.

If you have good light, higher ISO won't be as obvious... but then again the fact you're ramping up your ISO is to catch fast or low-light targets.

If you're printing on 4R, ISO 1600 noise might not be as obvious as one on A4, so the amount of scaling and zoom really is your main consideration.

With this, I'll let you all answer your own questions ;p

Personally, with my 1000D, ISO 800 is as high I would go for most shoots. I usually stick to 100-200 for daytime and 400 for the rest if possible.

Normally i will try to use ISO 800 and below, if possible as I have used 450D previously and learn to maximise the usage of low ISO as far as image quality is concerned.

If really in extreme low light situation, i will up the ISO to a max of 6400.

Nah, it's not the MP, it's the sensor size. A simple example, PnS like G10 with 14MP versus 350D with 8.2MP – 350D is way better as sensor size is way bigger too.

yup. i think they call it pixel density or something. Generally, for a similar number of MP, a bigger sensor size will outgun the smaller sensor size.

Using a crop, 1600 is way too high, even with latest processors. I feel too much definition is lost.
On a FF, 3200 would be high. I'd like to keep below that range

Based on experience on camera bodies that I had:
D80 - ISO800 max
D300 - ISO1600 max
D700 - ISO6400 max (usually ISO3200 is enough)

I think that if you have time to for a tripod or can use flash then use as low an ISO as possible.

If I'm shooting events, I would rather push my ISO up to the 6400 (for D700) and capture the moment with a bit of noise rather than get a blur or oof shot with low ISO and slow shutter/large aperture.

To me photography is about capturing the moment because once lost, it's never going to come back.

somehow i felt the noise are not jarring out for attention and therefore makes it really useable. did u follow the setting that has been discussed? some argobasta's setting or something?

on a sidenote, ACR5.5 can read 850 raw files? can LR 2.5 read them too?

didn't use any specific setting. just direct covert to jpg from craw.
