How effective is VR?

IMO, VR is a double-edged sword. When the shutter button is half pressed (for focusing), even when you mount your VR lens on a tripod, it will be "tricked" into adjusting for "camera shake" when the object is disturbed.

Those who have used the AF-S 105mm f/2.8G VR will understand how frustrating it is. No to mentioned it drains your batt like a free-flowing tap.:)

SO whilst it may help to step 1-3 stops down for your shutter speed, object movements may result in SLIGHTLY longer focusing time to frame a shot.

My 2 cents

Err don't switch on VR when mounting on tripod? :p

However, for macro lenses, is it neccessary to have VR when you're not using a Tripod ? convention says Macro Photography -> Need tripod, but what about when you do not have one with you ? If say you wanna take flower macro's is it still possible without VR ?

Totally depends on the lighting right?

If you're shooting at 10am-2pm with bright sun or if you're relying on external flashes as your dominant light source, you can easily shoot above 1/250s (even at high F-numbers) thus negating the need for a tripod

but there a few factor your ahnd cannot be shaky ur shutter speed and most important the iso
