IMO, VR is a double-edged sword. When the shutter button is half pressed (for focusing), even when you mount your VR lens on a tripod, it will be "tricked" into adjusting for "camera shake" when the object is disturbed.
Those who have used the AF-S 105mm f/2.8G VR will understand how frustrating it is. No to mentioned it drains your batt like a free-flowing tap.
SO whilst it may help to step 1-3 stops down for your shutter speed, object movements may result in SLIGHTLY longer focusing time to frame a shot.
