Have you thought who built your house? Who built your office? No doubt, there are good and bad people, but you only the good Singaporeans, and the bad foreigners only......thats being half blind,

yes, they built the houses, the offices, the markets, the toilets, the resorts, the skyscrapers ... but they are paid. basically no concern to how our country civilization will progress.

once their contract is up, they will pack bag and enjoy life with S$ in their bank.

'they' are referred not any specific group of ppl, please

Recently i went to Japan for a trip. And i have been very shocked by their sense of national pride and their level of excellence. The country is not without litters but if you observe the crowds they are mostly very orderly.

It put me to think that in Singapore we have been taught to think we are good or no 1 but are we really?

When i came back,i see crowds squeezing into train before the ppl can actually come out, neighbours hanging out dripping wet laundry, noisy handphone rings and ppl talking out loudly.

I saw in japan train station they have no lines to tell the ppl to queue here so that alighting passengers can get off but ppl just go into orderly manner on their own. They can eat on their train while we can't. Someone ask me why do we need those yellow lines at our MRT.

I hate to say this but i replied. It is a symbol or a sign to show the failure of our moral education,of our society standards and it is a reflection that singaporean just can't be considerate. Mostly suffered from colourblindness and are illiterate despite the years of education they may have. No one can read signs...no can can read what's written on the board...no one knows what is basic courtesy.

I know there are some good ones around still...but really...is the majority good or bad? i prefer to think most are bad.

With this i thought we shld start a thread to show ugly singaporeans action. to put these ppl to shame.
maybe, years ago, there are signs n rule to tell japanese to obey rules such as the above. over the years, it 's slowly been removed as the ppl began to cultivate a good attitude. Be patience, give singaporean some time, and the rules and laws will fade away

saying that 90% of the people who cause civic "inconsiderable" acts of kindness does not negate the fact that there's still to account for 10%.

that's as good as saying "until they improve themselves, I don't see why I should improve myself."

come on people. is it that hard to be a bit more polite? mind your Ps and Qs, smile when smiled at, flash a smile when somebody says something nice, or just being the good citizen? nobody's asking you to donate your kidney, or to consider cutting off your genitals for the general well being of a fellow human being. a simple giving up of seats to people who need it more than you, a simple using of your car's signal lights to signal your intention, a simple slowing down to allow traffic to merge into your lanes, a simple slowing down to allow AN EMERGENCY VEHICLE WITH LIGHTS AND SIRENS BLARING through.

in many ways, Singapore is an awesome country. but that doesn't give us the excuse to rest on our laurels and not strive to improve ourselves, regardless of who is the one acting against common sense and logic.

I want to first clarify that i'm not with the intention to start a personal attack with this thread on anyone.

I agree with the fact that in every country and places there are bound to be good and bad side. I'm not saying all of us are bad. But one thing i feel strongly is that i think we have been brought up with the thinking that we are no.1 or the best. And this often gives us the idea we are never wrong. In fact i think many are living in self denial if you don't see the problems.(i'm not saying i'm perfect, and definitely there are enough evidences around for us to start all these courtesy campaign)

There are many FT around. There are good ones and bad ones too. They created another set of problem but let's not move in the direction and just keep make very bias remark abt them(referring to them as groups or anything is rather demeaning.) Indeed they do the jobs SGP don't want. But even if they build our homes..it doesn't mean they are free to do anything. And please don't bring up abt forefathers...it is very sensitive to some ppl. it is not even relevant. we look at the society and we want to move forward not backward. if u even want to go in that line...come on..in the early days of china history there were many philosophy abt how ppl shld behave etc..but we lost it somewhere in the history. And to even talk draw a relationship btw China and Singapore Chinese... please..take a look at your passport.

I agree the Japs are very discipline ppl. and that it must be abt their past history. but surely family upbringing etc must have play a part. if everyone plays their part we would have set a fine example for our children. but if we go around just covering up the problem and live in self denial, i fear our kids will rise up and become a GFN in future. If our country men stand up for what they believe in and the good values they believe,i think even with influx of FT,they will have no choice but to follow. is like in Jap,if i had not follow the line in order..u will feel strange and alienated. But because we allow ourselves to move and compete with the rest,we follow their actions rather than to change.

For those who live in HDB. How many of you actually experience neighbours who hang out their wet Mops...dripping laundry..and the water from the mop or laundry just landed nicely on your clothes...you tell me is this sthg very hard to understand for a person.what does it shows?

I rest my case...i don't want to start a war here.

side track abit, do anyone of you think that Singapore now is alittle bit cheapo country? Foreign Talent? Isnt really talents or some cheap migrants that can be lelong so easily?

ugly or nice is in the mind of the judge.

people from diff nations just behaves differently.

what is the use of putting people to shame? how constructive (or destructive) is it going to be for this forum?

we have the stomp to do what u said. it's good (or bad) enough.

At least our people don't go to streets to protest, fight with police, runining public peace and destroying stuff. That's pretty ugly.

the yellow line thing, the next time u board the train, and if ppl squeese through the center, u know wat u should do?

you should open ur eyes bigger and see if they are the china and other FT ppl. look carefully. they might look like singaporeans, but open ur eyes bigger and observe carefully..

90% of the times, i realise those that squeeze through the centre are not local singaporeans, they are the china n FT ppl.

especially those china ppl, they look so much alike like singaporeans, and i dunno how to tell them apart from singaporeans. so how do i know its not singaporeans that is ungracious? after many pek chek times of being squeezed in the centre, i followed behind those ppl who squeeze thru to check out the person. Once the person open the mouth, from the smell of the breadth, the words they say, and their ugly behavior, i immediately knew they are not local singaporeans. and i was wrong to condemn singaporeans as being ungracious... dam it its these FT that are polluting our green singapore! :thumbsd:

my advise: next time, those tat squeese in the center, follow behind them, go and do a proper check on them to determine IF they are singaporeans. trust me 90% of times u will be surprised

this is an uncalled-for racial bashing. you have been warned.:nono:

Why not start a thread comparing Japanese to PRC Chinese if you are so free?

They walk mostly on the left, and walk away from you if you come, they queue on trains/buses.

HS

Are you sure they are so gracious? if you walk not fast enough they will push you and sent regard to your mother. They did this to some poor "Chan" from PRC, I see this with my own eye last month.

Actually, before I came to Singapore in the early 90's,
HS

No wonder you curse those youngsters who hang around PSA Tower when you first thought they are Singaporean. But when TS tell you they are from PRC you defend them as they do nothing wrong and no big deal.

You are very gracious.
:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:to you

Since most of us already know what is not working, wouldn’t it be more productive to work on placing the right stuff into practice?

But sometimes, I can’t help thinking that those who have not done so are waiting for someone else to make the first step or have a majority of people to do it first. When there are “not enough people” demonstrating the “correct way”, the rest would likely not follow. If there is only like 1 out of a 10 doing it, the rest would not follow for fear of looking odd or disadvantaged and they would just stick to their old routine.

For those bad habits to change, we need to get a lot of people motivated to make that change. When there is enough volume, the rest would follow. But how do we get “enough volume” to get going? I believe it is a mindset thing. All that is required is a thought of “it will begin with me”. By stepping up and doing it first regardless, it will slowly lead to a widespread change. But being in a not very perfect world that we live in, there will probably be some hardcore addicts that might be difficult to convert.

It’s not very efficient constantly talking/debating about the problem but yet produce no real solution to solve it. Everyone(almost) seems to be waiting for someone to do something, but nobody(almost) wants to be the first to start the change. Everyone is stuck in a vicious cycle of I look at you; you look at me, patiently waiting for someone out there to produce a solution or let it self-heal or an impossible miracle to happen.

Let’s focus on what you can control rather than what you can’t control. The change begins when everyone dare to lead their own first step of change(without waiting for others). :)

when I was in Jap, I observed a few times people never give up seats to pregnant women too. :bsmilie:

May I humbly suggest each take a step back, including the moderators.

There is no end comparing between countries. The grass is often greener on the other side.

Yes, some cultures may look good for us to admire and emulate. But like it or not, we are here on this island, in this country, in this society.

A gracious society takes centuries to build. The values are taught from homes and are best passed down from one generation to another. To assume we can change overnight is a farce. To compare is a challenge.

Let each of us be the example on the road towards a more gracious society. We dont need to look or compare. We just have to do the right things to make this a better place.

personally hearing from an ang mo who has moved to singapore..."many singaporeans migrate overseas thinking that life is better off there. however, having lived in different foreign countries and in singapore, i'd still say singapore is still the best place to live in"

the yellow line thing, the next time u board the train, and if ppl squeese through the center, u know wat u should do?

if i'm at the front of the queue, i never allow others behind me to board if there are still passengers alighting. i'd physically use my body to block their advance and verbally request that they queue up. so far, none have made attempts to squeeze after i've told them off. locals and foreigners alike

well it depends,

i won't say for sure that it is the best for anyone and everyone

but it isn't a half-bad place :dunno:
