Hi CS,

First of all, thanks for putting together such a comprehensive guide to buying camera equipment in HK.

I will be going to HK in 2 weeks time, i am intending to buy a Canon 70-200mm F4L IS USM lens and probably a battery grip for canon 50D. I have checked with price.com.hk, price is about HKD9750 for a one with HKD warranty... does ECHO, tin shing, DCfever carry grey sets as i do not need HK warranty? For battery grip, any recommended places to get it?

Thanks in advance

Bro CS, your guide is really informative. I will be dropping by HK next sat to buy some lens(es). Just like what others have mentioned, you are really fantastic. Need to treat you to kopi if get the chance. You want anything from SG? Kaya? Bah Kwa?
I am glad you found the guide useful. As for Kaya and Bah Kwa, I still have plenty with me since my daughter still lives in SG and I also visit SG once in a while. Thanks for your kind offer.

Tin Cheung might have gray sets but for Wing Shing/Man Shing, they usually sell local sets only. As for battery grip, if you are going for Canon grip, then most of the stores will carry them. If you have time, you can ask around on the price and go for the lowest quote. Test the lens/grip extensively and get them early during your visit as you still might be able to come back for exchange should something goes wrong.

If you have time and really want to find the lowest price, look at the price.com.hk and go for those quoted the lowest price, usually those are smaller shops with a store that are located in places that are a bit hard to reach. Some don't even has a shop front and only do COD delivery. The ones advertised on price.com.hk usually are honest shops but take note of the terms and conditions before you hand over the money. They usually have a 7 days 1 for 1 exchange policy if the item is faulty.

Hi I want to buy a Nikon lens 24mm 1.4G. Any recommendations where to buy in HK? Aside from the price, I need it to be brand new and have international warranty. For now my only reference is http://www.ygdragon.net/. Many thanks in advance!

hi.. thanks n thumps up for the effort to create such a useful and informative thread.. have been looking high n low for 1..
anyway i dont quite understand this portion..

U mention Sony does not have international warranty information on their website. However, I have communicated with them via email and was told Sony Hong Kong does provide “Tourist Limited Warranty” which applies to all overseas customers except mainland China (mainland China has a separate overseas warranty scheme). The “Tourist Limited Warranty” covers Sony compact cameras, DSLR camera bodies and lenses (but not flash). Customer will need to apply for the "Tourist Limited Warranty" in person or by mail in order to enjoy Sony warranty service outside of Hong Kong. Their customer Service Centres are located at:
[1] 16/F East Point Centre, 555 Hennessy Road, Causeway Bay in Hong Kong Island and
[2] 9/F Wai Fung Plaza, 664 Nathan Road, Mongkok, Kowloon

so.. do u mean i can buy from any other shop (need not Sony style or Sony centre) then bring the recipe and product to them n register with them at the customer Service Centres???

Yes, you can buy the Sony HK local sets from any shop and convert that HK local warranty to the "Tourist Limited Warranty". Unlike Nikon and Canon (until last year) actually offer International warranty cards that you can bring back to SG with you and use it to claim warranty service in SG Nikon/Canon without needing to "convert".

Note: Canon stopped their international warranty practice last year.

hmm alright..hopefully Sony dosent change this policy at least until i get my lens.
Thanks!

Hi CS,

Would you know if lightmeters will be cheaper to purchase in hongkong? For example sekonic L308 series and where can i find it? Does all the shop carries them?

just back from HK

bought canon s95 from wing shin.
quoted hk$3180 (sg$513 based on 6.2 exchange rate) with 8gb sd card, extra 3rd party batt and neoprene casing.
walked over to the next street to man shing and was quoted hk$100 more therefore went back to wing shin & closed the deal without further bargaining.
registered for tourist 6 mths warranty at canon servicing center at tsim sha tsui.

completed the deal at wing shin less than 1/2hr and in-out of the servicing center less than 15min.
a happy s95 user in less than 2hrs when i'm in hk.

*mod: pls shift this post to the appropriate thread if its not suitable here. thanks

Thanks for this guide! Is there anyway to contact Man Shing or Wing Shing? I see the Voigtlander lens I want on price.com.hk but it has been discontinued in pentax mount and I would like to enquire on price and availability. Thanks!

There are quite a few shops inside the Mongkok computer centre. I won't say they are not trust worthy but you need to know the current market price in order not to over pay. I have bought stuff from a couple of the shops there because they offered lower price than the others.

For people not sure about the current HK market price or have no time to compare price between shops, I will always suggest Wing Shing as they have a fixed price quote and won't change the quote base on who you are or who you ask that quote from. Their price might not be the lowest but you are sure you won't get cheated either.

Thanks alot!

when buying lens, can i ask to test a few copies and then select 1 or are they stricter and will only allow me to test 1 copy?
