I have just updated this shopping guide. Here are the highlight on the changes:
- update Canon's change of International Warranty policy
- added Google map to some of the popular stores
- update on store addresses

Does anyone know if Wing Shing / Man Shing and Tin Cheung are authorised dealers for Sigma lenses? I want to buy the Sigma 30mm, but I'm worried about international warranty. Thanks in advance. ;)

Just wondering did anyone try shipping the lens back from HK before?

According to Sigma HK, both local set and gray set carries Sigma warranty card. The only way to tell it is a local set is the additional circular laser label that is on the card which is issued by Sigma HK.

Local warranty is one year parts and labor but there is an additional 2-year calibration service included. A lot of people mistook that as the 3-year warranty which is not true.

Wing Shing, Man Shing and Tin Cheung will carry both local and gray set so you need to note about the laser label mentioned above to distinguish them.

In order to claim SG Sigma warranty, you might need to give Sigma SG a call and ask them if you buy the lens from HK, what proof will they need in order to claim warranty service in SG. e.g. company chop, original receipt, etc...

thanks

just a quick qn: may be getting lenses in HK this weekend - will have to check the actual stock but presumably most lenses are still manufactured before 1 Oct and hence are issued with the old green intl warranty?

which lens(es) are you looking for? Unfortunately, the more popular ones are already on new stock. Most shops restock their lens inventory every two weeks but of course, the slow moving ones are still with the international warranty card. You might have to check with a few shops when you are in HK.

thank you so much for updating new and updated information on this thread CS Tan !

Google Map..... drool !!!! Thank you again

You are welcome. I am glad this guide is able to help fellow CSers.

Thanks !

Have a friend in HK now so just keeping fingers crossed

Cheers

So far, most lenses still on international warranty, for a 24-105 from TC for winter holiday this year (don't want to risk my 17-55). Prices do seem to be a little higher, maybe adjusting to the low HKD. And weather was hot hot hot ... strange.

Hi CS, thanks for this helpful thread. I was looking through the prick.hk prices and I was wondering if the prices there are close enough to the prices that the reputable stores in HK are selling at. I'm still trying to decide whether to purchase my 60D or 7D with 18-135 or 15-85mm lens in HK. I tried to email those reputable stores but no one replied. Also, usually, when we haggle with the seller, how much can we get? What kind of a range would be considered too good to be true? I want to save $$$ but also don't want to get cheated of course just for a 50-100 SGD.

There is a freudian slip in your post somewhere. :bsmilie:

Anyway, for the price in www.price.com.hk, sometimes you might have to look hard in order to get to that price level but overall it is pretty close provided the quote is a recent one (take note of the date of the post). Do take note of the price difference between local (
hong_16.gif
) and gray (
water_16.gif
) sets. If you go to places such as Mongkok, you will notice the price difference on a HK$5,000 lens will be about $100-200 at most. If you really want to play it safe, go with the more reputable stores or those electronic chain stores even if it is slightly more expensive.

Shops in HK normally do not reply to email quotation requests nor phone calls asking for quotes. This is because the price is quite competitive in HK and they are afraid their competitors will use the info to undercut them. As for bargaining, my advice is that there is no need for that provided you have ask enough shops for their best quotes. Just go with the best quote from the reputable shops. Nowadays, a lot of shops (such as Wing Shing) will quote you the same price either your payment mode is cash or credit card but you can still find some shops (such as Citicall) that are willing to give you a slight discount if you pay cash instead of credit card.

Hi everyone

Just wondering if anyone has bought lenses from Tin Cheung? I'm
pretty concerned about online shops' creditibility, no doubt prices are pretty competitive.

Tin Cheung in HK is the equivalent of Cathay Photo in SG. I guess that answered your question.

Actually their online price is slightly higher than their shop price. One thing you need to take note is that Tin Cheung sells both local & gray set. Make sure you know which is which before committing to the purchase.

Thanks CS Tan for the clarification. I didn't know about their equivalence with Cathay Photo in SG. That helped!

Thanks for your help! That's really useful information. Does anyone happen to have Sigma Singapore's phone number? I tried searching for it online, but failed.

so the 100-200 u mentioned is SGD or HKD? if HKD then really not much diff huh...

Credit card or cash, i'm a bit tored ... pretty worried about my savings being eroded by the freaking 2.5% that visa charges and the lousy exchange rate.

It is HK$100-200. Well, the current exchange rate is quite favorable to S$ at around S$1=HK$5.95. I would suggest you do the exchange in SG since HK moneychangers' rate is usually not too great.
