Hey guys, I will be relocating to Hong Kong this Wednesday. It has been an awesome 12 years stay and I will be missing quite a few friends and colleagues in Singapore.

As promised, I will keep this little shopping guide update now that I am even closer to the action. Feel free to ask questions, provide comments so the shopping guide will continue to benefit everyone here in Clubsnap.

Cheers,
CS TAN

Bon voyage bro. Maybe one day when I pass through HK in one of my trips to china, we might be able to meet up for a coffee and go shoot together.

Take care and thanks for the constant updates.

Thanks for the well wishes. I am now officially moved to HK (still waiting for my container to arrive). Drop me a PM if ever anyone have questions in buying camera gears in HK. I will try my best to help out. Cheers.

Hi, I'll be leaving for HKG on the 11 July. If you are leaving later than me. I can help you check the prices for the 2 items you are looking for. You can leave down your mobile nos and I'll send you a text message once I find the price for it. Most likely I'll will head down Tim Cheung as it's a more reputable store in HKG like our own Cathay Photo. They do carry a wide selections for Billingham bags.

Hope this help.

I love this thread. Excellent info by CS Tan. All the best!

Many thanks for this sensational guide :-)

I have never been to HK but regularly visit Tokyo and Osaka. My interest is now in buying a used super tele like a Canon or Nikon 500/600 f4. I see plenty of these in Japan but prices are quite high. WOuld you have any idea if the prices in HK for used super teles are less or more than that in Japan?

Thanks!

I have no idea on the price difference of a 2nd hand lens between Hong Kong and Japan. However, there are quite a few shops dealing with 2nd hand lenes in Hong Kong. You can check the shopping guide's Tsim Sha Tsui section, the bulk of the 2nd hand shops are in
Champagne Court, 44 Kimberley Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon (尖沙咀金巴利道 44 號香檳大廈商場).

As with all 2nd hand lenses, it really depends on the individual lenses' age and quality and you should at least have a basic understanding of the price of these lenses before embarking on visiting those 2nd hand shops. You should be able to bargain with them since the pricing are a lot more flexible than their brand new counterparts.

Looking for this one? http://www.price.com.hk/product.php?p=111998

If you are staying around Yau Ma Tei, you should have no problem finding Mongkok. Go to the Mongkok section in the shopping guide and look for the ones with stars next to the shop name. They are reputable shops and should be quite safe.

The price in the website are mostly contributed by members who has bought the item. Of course, there are shops that try to post their best price to attract business as well. You can tell from their different entries. So, there really are no fixed price, use the info as guideline only when doing purchases. In Hong Kong, there is always room for negotiation. It really depends on individual bargaining skill.

Sorry to hijack this thread, heard Canon no longer has international warranty after 1st August 2010, so i think might be useful for bros who are considering getting Canon gears from HK.

http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=739358
I checked with Canon Hong Kong this afternoon and they said no change to the International Warranty policy for the lenses and flashes. Not sure if Canon is implementing this in phases worldwide but at least officially, Canon HK is still providing International Warranty as of now.

I am going to HK next week to visit my GF. I am planing to buy 2nd hand teleprimes like 300mm f2.8 or sigma 500 f4.5. Would that be helpful to bring along a Chinese or Cantonese speaking person to bargain with the shops cuz I know neither? Thanks in advance :)

Hi, I have never been to HK before and I am hoping to go there before this year end. I would like to ask are all shops negotiable and if not, how would i be able to recognise which shops are clearly not negotiable? For example, I am assuming Sony shops/department stores are not negotiable? I dont want to look stupid by negotiating when its not possible.

Could you also advice when would be a good time to visit HK (I would like to avoid rainy and cold seasons if possible)? How about when are their sales/year end sales season?

Last question, I am looking for a sony 85mm f1.4z and sony hong kong website list the prices at hkd9990. Does anyone knows how much the street price is? (and would i be able to bring this lens to sony HK and to change for an tourist international warranty if i buy from any shops in HK)?

thanks a milion,
gp
