actually, with the insert in, the format is somewhat close to 6 x 4.5.

with the insert REMOVED, the format becomes 6 x 6.

when you have the insert removed, be sure to file away/tape down the sharp edges that the film plane will pass through, or they will definitelyscratch away your film emulsion.

a funny quirk associated with the 6 x 4.5 insert is, when you hold the camera in horizontal position ... the framing is actually vertical, and vice versa.

so meaning to say, if you want to take a HORIZONTAL composition, you have to hold the camera in a VERTICAL position.

Oh I see, thanks for the clarification. So the 6*45 is actually the stock insert that comes with the camera and by removing it, you're converting it with to 6*6? So the one perly's selling http://perlyinc.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=44 is something optional? :sweatsm:

Thanks. :D

There are 6x6 and 6x45 inserts. the advantage of using an insert is that is protects the film from being scratched as you advance it and that it helps to flatten the film so you have a greater chance of getting a sharp image. If you aren't using 645 much, you can just cut away the 645 insert to get a 6x6 insert.

to get a 6x6 frame from the 6x4.5 insert, i just cut out the baffles (the sides) of the 6x4.5 insert which just leaves the top section frame. this goes back into the camera and it's rounded edges protect the film from scratching. if you want, you can make up new baffles using black construction paper.

Thanks for the tips guys, I think I'll just play around with the 6*45 inserts first before I do modify the camera. The first thing though, is to draw designs on the camera!

Woohoo! I got my Holga from perly just now. Went all over with my buddies to take shots. :D

woooot ~~~!!!!

have fun and don't forget to show us some pics !!!

so the insert is just to protect the film from being scratched?

i use smooth black tape (those electrical tape kind) to smooth out the edges~
