Let the western 'silent' weapons of Mass Destruction do it's jobs in bringing democracy to China Eg Coca Cola, McDonalds, Starbucks, MTV , KFC , BMW, Mercedes, Samsung, LV, Chanel, Apple , NBA

It is already done at the economic level. Allthough the party calls itself being 'communist' there is nothing left of the actual communist idea and the respective economic system (developed by Marx and Engels, finalized by Lenin). On the contrary, the economic system resembles the model of cold-blooded capitalistic England and many other countries in 19/20th century. What is left is the claim of absolute power by a political group. To me, the difference to the old emperor's family and their attitude is little.
To be honest, democracy would be a good idea for China. It would slow down the development in many ways :bsmilie:

Democracy is a western idea. If not we'll be happily living in imperialism.

Beijing knows the best play is the card of indifference by not doing anything at all. Soon the student protesters will grow restless as their demands are not heard and occupy key infrastructure and installations such as the Hong Kong International Airport (say for example) etc. etc.

Financial institutions will be affected with the HSI plunging away and you'll automatically see Hong Kong businessmen and women with their respective vested interested affected, engaging the triads to deal with protesters.

Win - Win for the Central Government either way by getting members in upper echelons of the Hong Kong social order to engage in direct or indirect (proxied) hostility with the Hong Kong commoners.

By 2 weeks , I guess everything would have died down now with thugs appearing and conspiracy theories floating around. One thing I really hope for is that the protests don't get out of control , giving authorities the reason to step in and tear everything up.

For China, the best move is to do nothing since the central govt wouldn't want to dirty their hands anyway.

Have a look at the various protests that happened in past years, be it Bangkok or any other place. They last because there are other people supporting them. Do not underestimate the sacrifices people can make for their ideals.

The arrangement in HK is the best she could ask for, how else would you think they could get? If China opens up like what HK wants, not only you see a collapse of China, even Singapore is going to suffer. Of course that is exactly what those people who have to return the territories would wish for because they could continue to be their master and play big brother.

Please... Suffering under China's influence? More like prospering due to China's influence. Without CEPA with China, you think HK can survive? The only reason why HK is doing well is because of China, and companies pumping money into HK as a hub going in and out of China.

Want to reap the economic benefits, must also take some of the negative side of things.

In comparison , HK is actually getting more autonomy as compared to under their ex colonial leaders.

The whole fiasco instead shows how easily the average citizen can be whipped into a frenzy and taken advantage of without a clear understanding of the situation.

It probably all stems from the general felt notion that most HK citizens feel negatively towards being associated with China and this is what China needs to work on.

Anyway, the protests should be dying down soon ; sadly - in HK the citizens have much more to lose at a personal level as compared to other countries where protesters can afford to camp at airports for months.
