high iso and reduce noise or dark photo

What are your settings for NR at high ISO in-camera?

Do you use a noise reduction program? If so, what is it?

i set to strong for noise reduction for my in built KX.

no noise reduction program yet... thinking of ninja. using paint.net to reduce noise now.

Fengwei's picture noise is consider very GOOD to me, i cant achieve that at all...

Sadly, most of the free programs can't make it when it comes to noise reduction.

If anyone has used something that works as well as Noise Ninja, please share.

I never use noise ninja but i use camera raw in photoshop cs5 and it works well too;)

i think the price is quite alright for noise ninja, thanks for the link. tonight i need to sneak into my wife's safe and get my CC out!

do you think it will be better to do noise reduction with pc and off the inbuilt cam NR control?

noise reduction software most of the time are better at retaining details...

Not sure how tolerant are you on noise. but this is taken with k-x at ISO 800

I cannot see noise though...

And This is taken by k7 at 1600 ISO

both are good!

can u share the settings?

I think the exif is still intact. You can check the setting from there

But the keypoint is do it on raw nd make sure exposure is good.

I used LR3 for processing and noise reduction also.

exif gone, its quite common after photo editing?

Honestly, IMO, its a personal expectation problem.
The Kx is already one of the best high ISO performing DSLRs. Its just impossible to have noise free images comparable to ISO100-200 with detail preservation.

Ok. Back to the fact that you cannot accept ISO800. :)
I suggest you use a flash (preferably bounced). It will allow the ISO to remain low.
If that is not acceptable as well, then shoot high ISO, use a NR program (usually sacrificing details) and resize the photo if necessary.
Paint.net NR is very rudimentary and its hard to use it to clean up above ISO1600 on a K7. You probably have a bit more mileage on a Kx. Its a very 'lossy' NR implementation as well.
Try the newer version of neat image, Noise Ninja or the recently well received topaz Denoise.
Take note that using all these will be time consuming.

I suggest u to take some photos with high iso and post them here for us to see.

I actually agree with ohok1973. I also use a K-x and compared the different iso levels and found 800 border line okay and 1600 not acceptable. Think I was using default noise reduction settings (strong?) and jpg output then (have learnt enough to change those, but never retested).
I personally don't like flash, instead I prefer to use better equipment such as upgrading to the K-5 (definitely better than K-x, although K-x is gd for its class) or getting lenses as fast as possible :)

The jpeg output from the K-x for high iso is not fantastic, but the RAW files are pretty good to work with - i.e. they respond well to good de-noising software and you can get very good results from them.

You have to realise that its not just about removing noise - you need to watch the color, the white balance, and the contrast levels carefully to make it look good. Contrast especially will help to hide the softness from aggressive de-noising.

Also, a lot of noise will simply disappear when you resize it for web size viewing - so take advantage of that.

Of course, K-5 high iso is even better. The low shadow noise is breathtaking, even compared with the K-x.

Example of K-x @ 12800 iso

Check the monitor also. some monitors shows a lot of noise than others. mine does have this kind of issue... view is really different from my notebook against my office desktop.
