missing from my Vivitar 285 HV flash ....

2002.09.19.screw.missing.2.small.jpg

This is abt 1 cm long.

I realised one day that my flash was not straight when mounted to the camera ... then found that one of the screws was missing from the base of the hotshoe connector of the flash.

The screw head looks like those type of small screws used on the spectacles, except the body is much longer.

Can I go back to Fotoguide (where I bought it) for assistance? How abt CameraWorkshop? I have gone to many hardware shop but they don't have such small screws ....

THanks for any advice.

Check if the screw thread is imperial or matrix type. Then you can look for farnell or RS catalog for a matching screw dia and length.

:( hmmm ... jasonpgc, thanks for responding, but this totally new to me ... what is imperial thread and what is matrix thread? :dunno:

did a search on the web abd take a look at the farnell catalog but it was too overwhelming for me ...

is there a shop which I can walk in, show them the screw and they can sell me in small quantities? saw a sales counter for farnell at tai seng drive ... u think they will entertain such thing?

Imperial threads are measured in fraction of an inch. Sorry its Metric "not Metrix". Metric threads are measured in mm. They don't fit each other. If you use the wrong thread, you spoil the nut too. Can try the "five gold shop" in your neighbourhood. They should have it, but must bring your screw to test for the correct thread type and size :)

Try spectacles shops.

Hi HOCL,

You can try

So far when I've any missing screws or need to change to a higher quality (e.g. stainless steel screws which does not rust), I always go to

Yong Seng Screws Pte Ltd

1) Blk 3 AMK Tech 1 #01-04 Ang Mo Kio Ind Pk 2A S(568050
Tel : 6481 8484 Fax : 6481 7090

2) Blk 3026 Ubi Road 1 #01-186 S(408719)
Tel : 6744 8282 & 6744 8787 Fax : 6749 2855

3) Blk 6 Syed Alwi Rd #01-311 S(201006)
Tel : 6294 1866 Fax : 6294 1178

They do sell in small quantity like 2- 3 pcs.
They are very knowledgeable & helpful.
It'll be good to bring your screw sample & your flash to their shop, so that you can try it out immediately.
They got a huge inventory of screws from tiny to big, so I guess you should be able to get it.

If you still can't get the screw, maybe you should ask the shop or dealer who sold you the flash for assistance.

Good luck.

Thanks to all who responded.

I have tried the hardware shops but no luck. I also thought of the spectacle shops but the screw is much longer than the usual spectacle screws .... Maybe I will first try the Yong Seng Screws .... didn't know that there are "specialist screw shops" around ...

everyday I learn something new....:)
