I would get a 2nd hand D80, with a 18-70kit + a 60mm Micro lens

slightly over 2k but will serve your need for macro really well. and a SB-800 should your boss decides to increase ur budget a little hehehe

Based on your budget of $2k and the interest for shooting macro. It is wiser to go for D80 or D70 with Tamron 90mm, Nikon 50mm f1/8 and SB600.

Hmmmm it seems like the D80 is a contender then, unfortunately, my "boss" doesn't know about my upgrade, so the budget is really fixed. lol

What will be the price for the D80 with a kit lens?

Flash wise I'm safe, can use back my SB600 from my old set up. (That's why I'm sticking to Nikon);)

Memory card wise, not a big issue, i can always give me old ones to my frens who still use CF cards.

One other thing, does the D80 have a battery grip? :embrass:

yes it does, MB-D80

The battery grip not that necessary to get it now. It allows use to shoot comfortably in portrait-wise and extra battery power. However, D80's battery life is IMHO one of the best in the market... I've heard ppl claim that D80 battery life = D200 + batt grip.

Unless you die die shoot portrait most of the time or want to look "pro", there is little use of a battery grip. And if you just need the extra backup juice, just get a 3rd party battery eg,Eastgear (got mine there). It lasts longer than the original Nikon batt.
