I need advice from the IR gurus in converting my point&shoot canon s3 to infrared.ok ,I understand that there is risk of shock from the flash capacitor and the procedure void the camera guarantee. so approached my local repairing shop and the owner agreed to undertake the work At present use a R72 filter with my canon s3...what I need is to shoot handheld in ir light so here are my questions.
1.After removing the ir block filter can I use the camera for infrared shooting with a R72 filter screwed on cameras adapter? will any focussing issues occur!
2.Is it necessary to replace a piece of clear glass if the ir block filter is removed?
There are lot of discussions all over the net and I think this is right place to ask.We propose to do it next week after getting favourable answers. Thanks everyone

hi niikon,

1. not sure, it depends, i have not used s3 before, so i cannot say for sure. but my old p&s hardly had any trouble with focusing, only trouble with hot spot from the lens.. the reason is of course, usually when you shoot ir, you will use high dof.. and the sensor of p&s so small, the depth is very good, so hardly will have trouble even if misfocus

2. probably, i remember every description of conversion i have mentioned that you need to replace with clear glass. but i'm not sure about this.

I would imagine that you would have to place something there of the same thickness.

For mounting issues, apart from having the raw sensor exposed and no protection.

Just my view (I have not had experience in doing this, but thinking of how these things are made I would presume it to be so).

Cheers :)

Well,Thank you very much for the quick respones. My s3 was able to achive brown skies and white foliage after setting a custom wB. but when swapping channels for colour there is a lot of noise,I think may be due to slower shutter speeds,so seriously thought of a conversion.

Here are some pictures without channel swapping,So what u think ....this canon model is sensitive eough for infrared capture??

Removed the ir block filter, its really a small piece of coated glass.now the camera is able to use all shutter speeds with the filter on.what I lost is the ability to focus, even the manual focus function is not available!! auto focus works in tele end though.
