list the features that you need (not want) that 50D cant deliver and you think 7D or 5D Mark II give... video perhaps?...

Well technically, I am just an amateur, I don't really need anything.

I wasn't very keen on video.

I just thought the 7d has a more advanced system and hence the will be better.

If I am not wrong, you are currently using 17-40L on the 50D most of the time.
17-40L on 1.6x body is like 27-64mm, which makes a very usable range for a walkabout lens.

If you do go for full frame body, you might need another lens to fill in that gap.
24-105L is a good choice to pair with. But that means another purchase.

No doubt, 5D mkII produces better IQ pictures, 7D is a very good camera as well. Based on
your shooting style, 7D might be a better choice of the two. Option to purchase battery grip at $139. =)
Think you can sell off the 50D and save for the next purchase

Ha ha, I'm beginning to realize the dangers of posting in this forum. It's so balanced and u guys make such convincing arguments.

U make a good point about the lens gap. But I do have a 50 and a 70-200.

Is the batt grip only $139? My 50d batt grip cost me more than that if I recall rightly.

Any reason why?
I thought it can adopt all the kickass stuff of the 7d

The 7D has 2 DIGIC4 chips to keep up with processing eight 18mp files being generated every second when you shoot in burst. The 5D2 has only one chip.

Haha... Just in case you are wondering what camera I am using, I am still using 10D. And I do
have 17-40L, 70-200L and 50 prime too.. Found myself using 17-40L most of the time.
Almost bought 5D MKII, but realise that I would need another lens to fill in the gap.

I am just sharing the dilemma that I was going through. Grip is $139 as a purchase w purchase
promotion. Check it out from Canon website.

I thought iq on 7d is quite superior to 50d?

yes, imo the 7D is at least 1 stop better than the 50D but you get more with the 5D. it's just a different feeling.

Actually I meant to say, I know there are a lot of fantastic photogs out there using 400d, 10d with kit lenses and their photos are breathtaking. Let's just say I'm not that clever and am looking for equipment to cover up my uh inability. :)

Wow ur lenses are same as mine!!

When u planning to decide. Ideally is to have a 7d and a 5d, but my wife will defn have none of that. Ha ha

This is a useful comment. I haven't tested so going with the comments here.

ideally you would want both 5D and 7D. next best thing would be to own 5D n 50D

5d brudda =v=

50d's got a good fps already, just that 7d's got higher fps, unless ya really really need that and the video >_>

There is no lens that covers all situations; likewise there is no camera for all events..
Allow me to post some pictures to illustrate my point.

Was taking pictures in a huge cave.

This is one situation where I wish I have full frame.. =P

A bit of macro-photography and nice bokeh is still possible too..

Taken with F4 wide open. =)

Here I was taking pictures in a parade.

Boy, am I glad that I have extra reach with the cropped body!!
But then I wish my camera have faster AF and larger buffer.

With all that, all pictures were taken with 10D + 17-40L. Imagine what you
can get with 7D or 5D mk II?! I am more of a "Portrait + action" person. I would
find 7D more suitable for me.

Ok forgive me if I sound silly but can I clarify

For cave picture, isn't 7d and 5d ability to handle high iso similar? I understand how full frame creates better bokeh but does it handle low light better?

2nd pic - I was just shooting the same yesterday. I really struggle with manual focus (I'm assuming u didn't use tripod) I focus and the damn insect moves. So how do u do it. I had 2 keepers out of like 30 shots.

3rd pic. Ya I agree that extra reach is necessary. And I keep reading and hearing the 5d doesn't auto focus fast.

So I'm now at the point, the 7d seems to meet 70% of my needs, but if I get it then I'll miss the full frame wonders of the 5d
The 5d is special and like some comments say, that plus my existing 50d should be a kick ass combination. Then I ask myself will I ever carry two cams!!!!!

So mebbe it's the 7d and wait patiently for the 5d mkiii .
But I'm far from reaching a conclusion.

if i were you, confirm plus chop get 5D.

1) since you are using crop sensor now, might as well try out FF. its good for landscape and portraits.
2) the classic 5D is worth buying, given its older technology. its the most value for money 2nd hand FF body nowadays! plus you wen burn a big big hole in your pocket. :P
3) now you can make full use of your precious range of lenes. Eg 17-40 is good for FF, try your prime lens on 5D, you will get amazing results! :)

However, i think if you major in sports, 7D might be your choice, can make use of the 7fps (duno if i am right, you can check it out)

17-40 would become as it was intended on the 5D, an ultra wide angle

7D bursts up to 8fps, not 7.

Sound silly? Feel free to ask questions. This is the purpose of this forum, isn't it?

For cave picture, isn't 7d and 5d ability to handle high iso similar? I understand how full frame creates better bokeh but does it handle low light better?
Looking at my picture, we are talking about 1st generation of DIGIC. Noise is
acceptable at ISO400. Anyhow, both 7D and 5D mkII can handle noise very well at high ISO.

2nd pic - I was just shooting the same yesterday. I really struggle with manual focus (I'm assuming u didn't use tripod) I focus and the damn insect moves. So how do u do it. I had 2 keepers out of like 30 shots.
I am lucky that it is pretty sunny that day. Set ISO to 200. Auto AF.
Got pretty good speed at F4, 1/4000 to freeze the motion.
If I haven't tell you, would you have thought this shot is taken perfectly with a single try?
It is actually taken with multiple shots (3 fps) =P
Discarded most of the shots with only a handful as keepers. But who cares?
I am not shooting with film.. =)

3rd pic. Ya I agree that extra reach is necessary. And I keep reading and hearing the 5d doesn't auto focus fast.
You think that my 10D focus faster than 5D mkII? =)
No offence, but practice makes perfect.
But generally speaking , 7D is a better choice if you do need speed. Pretty similar to the
professional series: 1D and 1Ds, different tools for different requirements.

So I'm now at the point, the 7d seems to meet 70% of my needs, but if I get it then I'll miss the full frame wonders of the 5d

70% of your needs is good enough lah.. Can't be to greedy. =P
But think about it.. If you do sell away your 50D+grip, you can top up a bit more
for a used 5D mk I.

I do come across situations where I wished that I have a full frame body. But that
is like 10-20% of the time.

At the end of the day, buy what you need. And start shooting..
Mai Tu Liao... BUY BUY BUY... Muhahaha... ;)

Ha ha ha thanks!

Its not the camera or the recent technology that make the photo better. It's the photographer!!!

brudder brudder....why get a mkii when u know they r coming out with mkiii?by that time u will regret why dun wait for mkiii...imo is better to buy a 7D to ease your hunger now and sell away the 50D(save the money for mkiii) then ask your wife if u can top up to buy a mkiii,if she dun allow then wait for next year jan then buy mkiii la....like that u got a 7D(crop sensor)+mkiii(full frame).best of both world...

Bro not trying to be crude but seriously watever you're shooting, i dont tink u even need to upgrade. The gear that you have if good enough to do the job. I doubt so buying a 5D or 7D will change the quality of your shots. Seriously save the $$ and get more lens or even save it to bring your family on overseas holidays so u can capture more of their photos.

I know someone would say this. But I defn don't think I'm in the same class of photographers as some of you are. I said somewhere before, I see great photos of folks using 10d or even iPhone. But me? I think equipment helps me.
