Hello everyone.

This is my first post. My name is Pete Russell. I live in the UK, north of London, near the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.

I am a longtime Minolta user. My first experience with Minolta was with the 9000 (which I bought in 1986).

It has been a trusty workhorse for sometime now. Love it. In 2000 I bought a Dynax 9, which I believe is the best SLR I've ever used.

I worked for a photo agency for some time and was using Nikon F4 in the 90s. I found them to be an overated camera. The Nikon lenses did not provide the same colour rendition and saturation the equivalent Minolta lenses provide.

I've really enjoyed reading your posts. This is a wonderful board full of enthusiastic photographers.

Now, fellow enthusiasts, tell me...do you think the 7D is something I should purchase. I have the cash and the desire, but is this a "keeper" or not?

Let me know what you think.

Very best

Pete

Hi There Pete....

Welcome to Clubsnap Minolta User section.

Glad that we share the same reason still being with KM. Based on your profile, as a professional i guess, to have a right tool for your job is crucial.

If you would ask me if the 7D is worth the investment......i would say go ahead. I was personally happy as a new user too as i am still shooting film/slides and the D7 color is truly real and very good straight off the camera.

From the past week, i had not done any touch up on any image ....except for 1 which i boost some saturation. Shot about ~400 pics....the hit rate on focus and color was great.

As a pro, i think you would benefit this ....

In shooting style i guess....it perfroms as well like any other camera.

Oh yah.....the noise handling is great til ISO 3200 which is very usable....

Well, try one out at your local store......i 'm sure you will like it...
Have a nice day ahead...

rgds,
sulhan

Thanks you for your reply. If anyone else wants to share their views, please post.

Yes, I do shoot professionally. It's quite funny sometimes as over here in the UK, I'm one of a handful of Minolta shooters who use Minolta to make a full-time living. Everyone else is Canon or Nikon.

I often get quite strange looks from "pros". Invariably the conversations are polite. Often they're so impressed when they see a Dynax 9 with VC grip and prime lenses.

"I didn't think Minolta made 'real' cameras", they often say.

And my 9 is especially real when they feel the weight! :)

Do you think the 7D is sturdy enough for pro, everyday use?

Do you think Minolta has a 9D in the wings?

Cheers,
Pete

with digital revolution, i think 9D is just a matter of time. If the sales of 7D is bad, the company might not release it that soon. or mayb concentrate on the prosumer or consumer cameras... so you should not buy... you MUST BUY!

to a newbie like me, i often think that minolta cameras are rather inferior to the Canon or Nikon systems... but now after looking into minolta, i think the other 2 systems are more like overpriced, the good part about them is their broad range of lens and a good resale market. its easier to buy & sell a canon & nikon lens, rather than a minolta...

Okay, I get it. I must buy... :) ... over here in the UK the initial stocks have largely sold out. So there's a good sign.

Your point about resale is not an issue with me. All of my Minolta purchases are still with me. I've never sold any of my gear, with one exception my Nikon kit.

Minolta actually has a broader range of lenses than most people think. And, the resale issue for me is a bonus. I can buy second-hand prime lenses that I know have only been used by enthusiasts and be confident they haven't been hammered by pros.

So there are quite a few benefits to Minolta. In some ways Minolta is a bit of a hidden secret, like comparing Apple OS to Windows. Most everyone uses Windows and get by but people who use Macs have an edge.

I hope the 7D, combined with
PhotoRetouchPro will give me that edge!

Thanks for your comments.

Hi! Welcome Pete, and great decision. Go shoot some stuff and show us yeah?

I'm sure Yorkshire has lots of beautiful landscapes to shoot although it's a little wet and cold at this time of the year still... :D

Congratulations!

I think I may have to wait 2 more years to plunge into DSLR.
But I'll certainly get a 7D or 9D by then.

shucks, when i am about to exit my door, down came the big pouring rain... now stuck at home...

There is no poor weather,
There is only weak minds

Ok just kidding, rain also can shoot mah, just need to be creative, different perspectives, and hope your camera don't get too much of the rain... ;p

Buy! Buy! Buy!...

I'm a Nikon user ... but I started with Minolta during my school days... Minolta in term of technology and innovation is a better player than the N and C.... but because of poor marketing and low Pro sector penatration cause them to be falling behind N and C... :what:

7D is technology is something that everyone are looking for.
