HD PENTAX-DA 20-40mm F2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR

After 20-40, I think 10-20 next !

Thanks.

Hard to choose.
On the one hand, I've got 24,31,35,40,43mm covered with primes and I get DA21ltd to close the whole thing.
On the other, this lens potentially can 'live' on the camera for most of the daylight hours when I'm on a tour.

eeyy...your lenses FL are really too close to each other liao...think you just need the 21, 31 and 43...i can trade my 21 with your 24...hehe

If I were you I would keep it & save up to buy the 20-40. The wide opening of the FA 31 could give you the edge in low light, further this is

by far the most praised lens in IQ & built +++. I've been drooling to have the FA 31 but would not want to part my hard earned money for an

expensive prime lens. If you can sell it to me cheap cheap then I would advice you to go for the 20-40 drop the FA 31.

maybe you can try FA35? i had both the FA35 and FA31 before..sold away the FA35 and still regret it..seriously if i wasnt so insistent on having all 3 princess, i think i would sell the FA31 and keep the FA35 instead because its smaller and IQ as good on digital sensor..(on film, i think the FA31 is much better than FA35 but i dun shoot film enough now..

try to get the FA35 2nd hand..the price is so much more reasonable..when i last checked about 2 years ago..the FA35 cost $800+ new..which dun make sense considering FA31 is about $1300 then...not sure about the prices now tho...

Hope I don't kena blast for stating this:

Just get the DA35/2.4 if considering the FA35/2.. Essentially, it's almost the same lens only with a slightly "smaller" package and with modern coating but more affordable!

As for FA31/1.8 price, it's worse now.. More sexpensive! Haha!

Will there be a big difference in PQ between the FA and the new DA Limited lenses?

21 is actually too close to 15mm.
My prefered lens would be a DA24/2.8.

FA*24 is a wonderful lens, but I like smaller lenses.
K24 is what I like about Pentax lenses. Small, flare resistant, sharp and pretty good bokeh for a WA, but too bad no AF when I am lazy.

Thats why this DA20-40 is attractive.
But I will wait for clarity on price and possibility of FF before deciding.

iMO FA35f2 IQ not same as DA3f2.4. Although I remember some time back some forums says the optical design the same blah blah blah. But I tested and compare and feel FA35 seems much sharper.

Agreed with you Poseur!

I also agreed with Yamasaki! I've owned the FA35/2 and sold it to fund for the FA Limited Silver Trio! Although the FA31 is a fantastic lens but I missed my FA35/2 a lot. When switching to GXR, I sold my K-5 with DA 21, 40, 70, DFA100WR Macro. None of them make me feel regret as when I sold my FA35/2. To me FA31Ltd and FA35/2 is different character lens and both of them are excellent lens.

Hahaha! It could be.. But we're helping a new guy here.. Let's make his Pentax adoption smoother and more enticing.. After that, let them poison flow slowly into his bloodstream..
;)

maybe they will start calling DA35 f2.4 a poor man's FA35..seriously..i think Da35 f2.4 is a value for money lens and a good start if you want to use primes...

I am not disputing the fact the DA35f2.4 and DA50f1.8 are nice lens, they are really value for money, recnelty BNS price are insanely cheap as well. perhaps you should have both ;)

I own the DA 70 limited & FA 50 f1.4. I love both lenses but my preference incline towards the limited. The reason being it is better in IQ & built, the color rendering is also much better if comparing it with the FA 50. I found that comparing the IQ of which lens is better in a computer screen can be tricky & difficult to tell much difference. When in print I found that the image produce by the limited lens is much better.
I am not saying that the FA 50 is a lousy performance. It can be quite a useful lens in many shooting situation. But in today digital age, it is weak in resisting flare & there is always the heavy purple fringing issue when shooting into the light. Due to this reason, I would not even consider the FA 35, unless it is a limited. For your info, the FA 35 is selling at more than $500 in japan Amazon. As for the FA 31 ltd, the price is still at the upper scale. Hope that when DA 20-40 is out, the respond will be overwhelming & somehow the FA 31 price will start to drop.

You meant PQ = print quality?

imo, The DA limited lenses are built for the digital. they are built specifically for the digital to produce

better & superior image quality, with a coat of HD they are even better. The FA lenses are not very good in

digital as in resisting CA, PF or flare. since they are built for film camera.

waiting eagerly for comments especially with regards to IQ & bokeh.. thanks

I'm afraid that you are missing the point! Comparing the DA lens with the FA lens (whether they are limited or not limited) is not as obvious as black or white! All the so call "weak" point you listed down also apply for the FA limited lens! Talking about PF, Flare, CA like that, the FA 77 Limited also could not compare with the DA70 Limited! However, lens is not just only CA, PF or Flare! The color rendering, the transsction from forground to background, ect .... are not the strong point of the DA. For many shooting condition, I even prefer the single coating lens over the multi-coating lens! Also, comparing the fast lens amd the not fast lens might not also a good comparison as well. We can not compare the 50/2 lens with the 50/1.2 lens!
