Hands-on with Pentax K-5 :)

sorry, what do you mean? i am a bit confused, since i do not have the k-7.

do you mean that when you rotate the camera, then the picture will adjust based on orientation?

the k20d doesn't have this feature, what it does have is that the picture will come out vertical when it was shot in portrait format, that's all...

like on normal camera, if u shoot portrait format, it will appear vertical on the lcd, but K-7have an extra feature where if u rotate the camera, the lcd will also correct its orientation so u turn ur camera any direction, the lcd display will oriented itself to the correct orientation...

Congrats to all K5 owners! :)

I'm interested to find out how the AF compares to K7? In K7, it tends to make a series of small focus adjustments before finally achieving AF lock. This tends to make the overall focusing slower and prevents the shutter from firing before AF lock is confirmed. Does K5 do this as well? And if it does, is it any faster (for AF-S)?

TIA.

It occasionally will hunt in poor light, bt usually it doesn't. Its extremely fast on screwdrive lenses, the microadjustments, if any, are done extremely quickly. SDM lens may hunt for a second or two though.

thanks for the explanation guys

now here are some golden questions:

(1) how does it fare in the "amount of detail" department, especially when compared to k20d?

(2) naturally we would not expect pentax to self-cannibalise its own offerings, but knowing how value-friendly they are.... is the IQ on k-r on par with k-5?

(3) even if the answer to (2) is "yes", weather sealing, the added bells and whistles on the k-5 like the pentaprism versus pentamirror, 100% vf coverage, etc... still make the k-5 a strong offering. (ok this isn't really a question)

ahhahaa nightmare.. u're quite funny arent u.. lol

K-5 seems like it has a LOT of DR. The RAW files are a joy to process.

Jpeg direct from RAW via LR3.2 (iso 100 f/8.0 1/160s)

Processed Jpeg (some recovery, fill light and blacks)

Some comments by GordonBGood

"For the technical analysis, I found that this ISO 80 image is even better than the ISO 80 that I got from a beta K-5 in that this one shows a full about 14 stops of Dynamic Range according to the DxOMark standard (standard deviation of noise level at absolute black as compared to full scale output) and this follows the usual fairly linear trend right up to ISO sensitivity range so that ISO 800 still has a DR of 11.5 stops. This is over1.5 stops better than even the K-x/K-r right across the ISO sensitivity range on an individual photosite basis in spite of having about 35% more photosites."

This is impressive! With an extra 3.5 stops of DR over the K-7/K20D, HDR and GND may become less of a necessity, the trade off would be a bit of extra time in front of the comp. Will be very nice for landscapes and architecture/interiors... ;p

SO the K-5 does not have the Extra feature of the auto-orientation?
It's a cool feature on the K-7 which i like it alot. Hmm.. how come They will miss it out on the K-5

Is there a setting in the K-5 to turn it on?

Don't worry. The K-5 has this same feature as the K-7 ;)

Though I missed the feature but for me this is not a deal breaker as the K-5 has many other really neat features :) I understand why the manual is so thick :D :D

??? :dunno: This feature can be found in the K-5 as well.

I think the camera setting info screen auto orientation is still there but the picture playback auto orientation is gone now, i.e. if you rotate the camera when playback picture taken it will not rotate together with the camera (like in K-7) accordingly like the info screen does. Anyway, this cool feature only Pentax has it, it is not found on Canon or Nikon (don't know about Sony). :)
