surprisingly, i find the three regular customer service staff at canon pretty well informed. in fact, one of them knows me from the Hardwarezone days when i was posting up information regarding SCSI!

yoohoo icyflame... will u be going down to the zoo this sunday??? maybe can give a show of what had been added :D (or can upload some screenshots of what the menu look like in your camera ;) )

btw, does changing the firmware has any effect on the warranty? afterall, we are installing a firmware that's not released by Canon.

install it like you would any firmware..

Sorry for being so blur, but I've never install any firmware before so I have no idea how its done. Can you please teach me?

there is nothing "must die for" with this hacked firmware. except maybe the reduce the size of the embedded jpg in RAW shots..

Agree nothing to die for. But add some functions and u can easily revert back to the original firmware. Other than reducing the jpeg size in raw, u can use the "set" buttons. Below are quotes from DP review

1) set to quality now all I need to do is press the set button and I can change the shooting quality with the dial, almost instantly from small through to raw

or

2) You can use the Russian Firmware to give you three button custom White Balance.

* Program the set button to option "3: Menu Display"

* Go to the regular menu and select custom WB then leave the menu by tapping the shutter or whatever. You do this so that when you return to the menus the Custom WB will still be selected.

* When you want a custom WB, take a shot, then hit the set button three times and then you'll have your new custom WB.

* If you do a lot of custom WBs, this can be an easy one-hand-no-need-to-look-at-the-camera method.

In my case, I usually leave the set button programmed to change quality levels, generally to toggle between Large-Fine and RAW. The 10D folks use the three-press-WB option all the time, I read about it in their forum.

yeah. unless you shoot only in raw. then the custom white balance and quality settings are irrelevant since you can do those in post processing. so only the RAW + embedded jpg size is relevant (and useful).

ie: 1gb CF card can keep 160 raw vs the original 137..
(so for my 512MB cf card, increase from 69 raw shots to 80 raw shots..)

sounds good to me.. Probably put it in tmr.

ok: installed firmware, camera now can store 80 RAW on a 512MB cf card...yay!!
