Many people = More people might get offended. But, they can't be bothered.

i was wondering though, if we ask for permission then isnt the essence of the photo gone? i kenaed a few times like that, asked for permission to shoot then the dude/lady start to pose and smile awkwardly.

how do you guys do it?

Sneaky shots/Quick snaps. I shoot without viewing the viewfinder 90% of the time. And about 50% from the hips.

Sometimes asking for permission to get the "posed" look can be a deliberate effect. :)

Asking for permission to shoot is wierd

Then the spontaneity of the moment is lost. ( Not all. Some shots are taken with the intention for the subject to be posed then so be it )

Usually I just shoot after I took the shot I will still keep the camera at eye level as if still aiming and then walk past the subject so makes him think i am not really aiming for him la.
Else just be nice and apologise if approached

:P

i've heard a lot abt shooting from hips. but really how is it done? 1st thing, where u hang the camera? 2nd, its obvious u're shooting when u hold the camera n press the shutter. 3rdly, is the shot taken while u're moving? 4th, hw to achieve focus? fixed focus?

i tink i'll practice with my pns 1st. at least there's no shutter sound ha.

I think girls will have it better when taking streets/ candid shots. It'll be even better if you are an ang moh. I've seen ang moh ladies taking pictures of practically everyone around them in Botanical Gardens, even small children, no one said a thing. I guess a lady behind a camera feels less 'perverted' and 'intimidating' than a guy behind one. I've seen how some guys with huge tele lens behaved while walking around 'hunting' for their subjects, sibeh suspicious looking, haha. When I do street shots, I will get my gf to accompany me. If anyone starts to give black face, I'll just ask my gf to give them her most innocent looking, cutest smile. Always works :bsmilie::bsmilie:

BTW, will the so called "Victimized" sue the photographer when one sees his or her face being put online without their consent?

Got this one time i shot a guy like 50-100m away from a carpark i took a pic of this guy at a condo and he took put his dslr and took my face also LOL

You wanna join shooting people with me? :p

1) Everyone has their own preference, I sling the neckstrap like a sling bag and the camera is always on my right hand 99% of the time.

2) I always check metering and exposures every time I enter a new light zone or periodically. And my right hand is ALWAYS on the camera so it wouldn't really be suspicious.

I use a 30mm (1.5x crop) which makes a total of 45mm, usually standing 1.2-1.7m and tilting the camera a little upwards will make the subject fill the frame.

3) I try not to move when I take shots because of camera handshakes and so on. But emotions and facial expressions are so fleeting and hard to capture, so sometimes I shoot even while walking/running/jumping/fainting.

4) I used to guess distance and read distance markings on my RF camera, but I use the wide center continuous auto-focus on my D90.

LOL!

I was wondering if it was partly a gender issue too.

I'm not really so much into street photography but on the days that I do, no one really bothers about me, and definately no one threatening to beat me up. Yet.

And i lagi no trouble photographing kids! :bsmilie:

guys with camera = pervert
girls with camera = hotstuff

i think thats their mindset =x
lucky this is Paris, or else you will be sued. ( i read it in the newpaper abt a month ago )
i think photographing streets needs a lot of luck.
if ur luck runs out, JIALAT.
if u r lucky, it will turn out perfect.
ive one time been confronted by a busker.
He gave me a tongue lashing but i just walked away and kept snapping at him =x

true, i agree with you, but if you are a male photographer at your secondary school age, people will think you are cool + cute and not a pervert...
Male photographers are middle age, I think are the ones will get pin point most ba...

ya. no matter how open concept a country is, gender is always weighted differently. its nature i guess. just like males are attracted to females and vice versa. of cuz i'm not toking abt some few cases.

i guess the 1st thing to learn for street photography is how to suddenly become deaf when the subject turns aggressive. just like the 1st thing to learn skating is how to break a fall :bsmilie:

sec sch playing with a dslr? i wldnt think he's cute, but i'll think his dad is damn rich haa..

Once took a pic of an old man in Crete, in one of the villages away from the coast. He waved his walking stick at me and shouted something in Greek -- probably "F**k off" or something -- lol! So much for the Greeks being a friendly lot! I was much younger then and it didn't bother me at all, I just ignored him. Now, I have more respect (and fear of being clobbered!) so I always ask first, even though it usually spoils what would otherwise have been a totally candid shot. Heck, I don't get paid to live dangerously!

haha. i just finished my sec sch. and my camera is all of my own expense.=(
advantage of my age to take street photography, i can always give excuses like
" its for my school project " and it always works. =D

Manually focus to a certain point, say 3 - 5 meters away, put on smaller aperture (you've got to experiment with this) and put on time shutter delay of say 2 sec. If your camera blinks when you put on shutter delay, just tape it up with a black tape so that it won't show. Find you subject, press the shutter and then point the camera at your subject. Do all these while slinging your camera from your shoulder and you don't even need to look at your subject. No need to see through the viewfinder the whole excursion. Should be fun.

wah.... how did you manage to earn that amount of money to support your hobby... ;p got lobong introduction me also leh~

Weird, i've never had problems with my street shots thus far, even though i tend to go very close.

Sometimes i ask, sometimes i just focus and shoot. I use a 35mm lens most of the time so maybe they think i'm shooting beyond them.

I try to look like i actually know what i'm doing. Being nervous just makes you look suspicious.

These are really nice shots!

I've been confronted before. And I wasn't even consciously taking a photo of the person. I've also been stared at, again, not for taking photos of people, but just areas of an old HDB estate. Usually I'd just smile and say that I'm just taking the scenery for "historical recording purposes".

Having said that, I generally don't like taking photos of random people. If they don't like it, I also feel uncomfortable.
