Good travel lense <$1200 for EOS 550D

the 70-200 f4l is a really great lens. really sharp. and if paired with ur 15-85 i think u'd be all set. as for travel lens...personally i use the tamron 28-75 f2.8. its half the px of the canon version and good enough for travel shots in my opinion.

I read alot about the 15-85 in other review sites, and all of them seems to praise the 15-85 as an excellent lense, downside being the price, but considering it is a new lense I think it'll be a good worthwhile investment. It seems to have the range and the IQ i'm looking for.

I think I will try some at the local stores and share my experience with it!

I would hardly call a new retail lens a "good investment" though. Good buys come from the used market.

Owned a Canon 18-200mm on a 500D before....sold the 18-200mm....regret....spent money and bought another one.

At that time, I already had the 17-55 and the 24-105...........

It was really a great lens for lazy person like me (dun like to change lens). Image was sharp enough for me and I pixel peep.....

if u want to use single lens, 18-200 mm is the choice. I'm currently using this lens and it's for sale since i seldom travel and only use my camera for event. Telephoto lens is more important for me.hahahahaha

15-85 also a good lens. i read a good review.
24-105 is not really suitable for me in crop body. It's not wide enough...

hmmm, but i thought the tamron 18-270 is also f5.6 @ 200mm? So is focusing slower due to other reasons?

For Tamron 18-270VC @ 200mm the max aperture is F6.3, thus result in the slower focusing.

Are you sure? The info from dpreview lens review is different from what you state. See below of page from link.

I was holding 18-200 mm quiet long, until I try my friend L Lens, yes, the IQ result is an issue for 18-200 mm if you already try the L lens.

just like, my first audio set is Sony combo and happy with it, until I visite my friend house with sony Home theatre set. :bsmilie:

i have both 24-105 and 15-85. I don think focusing time is a concern if its landscape and shooting friends in a group.All can wait a extra 1 or 2 secs? Quality similar and i pixel peep sometimes. For my 550D and 7D,i would use 24-105L as my quick snaps and videoing. Where 550D with 15-85 since it much lighter for a light body. Since TS mentioned about traveling, portrait, landscape. Changing lens to give opitmum results also not too possible for just 1 lens. I would suggest a EFS 15-85mm since is upgrade ver of 17-85mm(was told from a shop).

True... the IQ of most L zoom are better than non L zoom likewise most L primes are better than the L zooms.

Was just wondering, I am seeing very few people reselling the 15-85mm on clubsnap, is it because it is a keeper lense, or is it because not many people got it yet? Some are quite happy with it (like limleong), but other than that I don't really hear much about it as compared to the other general purpose lense.

As for future consideration, I personally would buy a 70-200mm f4 IS lense to pair up with the 15-85mm. Do you guys think it'll be a good combo?

The 15-85mm + 70-200mm is a very good combo and you get good IQ and range. Prob you dont see much people selling the 15-85mm on BnS is because its relatively new and its a keeper lens as well.

Hi everyone, thanks again for your invaluable input. Based on what most of you have recommended, I think I've managed to narrow down my choices to the 18-200mm or the 15-85mm. Though I'm more inclined to 15-85mm due to the reviews regarding the good IQ, and USM, cause that is what I really want in my future travel lense.

It is true the 24-105 L does seem a little lacking for the wide angle portion, and will require a UWA lense to cover it. I think the main reason I am attracted to it is because of the L quality and resale value, and it may not be that practical for APS-C cameras, probably it'll be very front heavy or a body like 550D.

My setup is 10-22 and 24-105 which pretty much covers the range needed.

that said, on my travel, i find that i have my 10-22 mounted for 90% of the time. i personally find that if there is a need to zoom, all i have to do is just move closer. on travels, the wide is much more valuable. even if i'm in some indoor places, i prefer the wide as i wanted to take shots of the interior.

You have the Tamron lens? Maybe it would be benefit most with a short test at yourside to verify the result from the two review site.
