Can someone intro a good photography book for newbies-who-wants-to-learn-photography?

I've been to a couple of sites, including the ones which were introduced by fellow forumers. But I would like a really GOOD BOOK. Hopefully, something like those fully illustrated colourful `teach yourself photoshop visually' kind of book.

And something which will cost below SGD$80.

Please recommend.

Idiots's Guide to Photography Like a Pro?

oooh, I forgot to add that I somehow don't really support the `ID10t's guide - to anything'.

And Hopefully it's a book for digital cameras. I'm using the ixus v2 btw, and hope that the book helps/teaches one to improve photography skills with that sorta camera.

But then again, I might want to take a look at it. How much is it btw? Is there a `Idot's guide to digital photography' ?

I'd suggest u NOT buy any book right now. Go visiting any National Library - there are plenty of photography books. Read ALL of them... and soon u will not be a newbie any more. Save the money to buy a camera and once u know what u want to shoot, buy books with specific topics, like wedding, studio, nature etc. Spend your money wisely:)

Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure!

If you don't mind reading website, I think this site ( http://www.camera.canon.com.my/photography/art/archive.htm ) provides very informative reading materials for both newbies AND amateur in Photography.

Now that is a COOL SITE I've never been to before. But it emphasizes more on SLRs... I've only got a point-&-shoot canon ixus v2. Will still read it though....

Thanks for the site! gonna print it all with my office's printer...hehe

i second tomshen recomendation, go to the library as there are alot of books to read and go to kino to see photographers books to get inspiration.

Try "The Kodak Guide to 35mm Photography". Quite an enjoyable read with plenty of useful information.

Our National Library has a very good selection of photography books. No need to buy, just borrow and read them! These are some books that are highly recommended...

1) Shoot! - Liz Harvey
2) Learning to See Creativity - Bryan Peterson
3) New 35mm Photographers Handbook - John Garrett
4) Close up or nature photography books by John Shaw

I just bought The Photographer's Manual by John Freeman for $12 last week. Haven't read it yet, but looks simple and good, it's also very cheap! But I think it's out of stock when i went back to the shop! If you want, i have a few old photography magazine to give away, just email or pm me :)

I see some pp have beat me to it. I second Bryan Peterson's books Understanding Exposure and Learning to See Creatively. Read the latter first if you're in a hurry to improve your photography, as it deals with composition. Both books are written in an easy to read manner. Shoot by Liz Harvey is contains articles written by experts in certain fields, eg. macro photography and commercial photography. Again, very readable. You can check out the Complete Idiot's Guide/Dummies Guide/Keep It Simple Stupid kind of book, but they're really not worth investing in. A book that's required reading for some photography courses in the US is Photography by Barbara London and John Upton, but it costs an arm, a leg and then more. ;) Other than NLB libraries, check out Borders' good if untidy collection, and Kino's so-so collection. Basheer at Bras Bssah has some books on photography too. Above all, shoot first, then ask questions later. (Just kidding!) HTH and good luck.

wow...thanks for the detailed recommendations. Really appreciate it.

For the book: Photography by Barbara London and John Upton, is it recommended for newbies to photography? Coz I really hope that I can get a book which will help me pick up new skills.

OF course nothing is as good as hands on and learning from experience or trial/error. But I hope to have something to cross-reference with when reviewing my photos, so that I can learn from my mistakes.

Please recommend a book which will help me with that....

Thanks-a-millionZ in advance :gbounce: :gbounce:

Hi,

I fully agree with the idea of borrowing photography books from the library.

I recommend photography books written by John Shaw.

Just went through The Photographer's Manual by John Freeman. It's pretty good for a beginner, with simple explaination and many photos to show! At $12, it's very cheap! Let me know if anyone of you are still interested in old photo mag :)

It's recommended to newbies, and also serves as a reference book of sorts to intermediate photographers, if I'm not wrong. U can check out Amazon as it has some sample pages, and Borders carries the title too, at least the last time I checked. BTW, u may want to read some of John Hedgecoe's books, which are full of pixs and very readable.

I was at Bras Basah Complex yesterday, and I happened to find this really good book store. It's filled with photoshop books and photography ones. Please check it out:

Bras Basah Complex

Lotsa nice Books on Photography.

For me, I bought the `The complete Id10t's Guide to Digital photography'. - hehe.... as recommended by someone here upabove in the thread. Price bought: $24.75.

Not really the book I'm looking for, but it's filled with information which is interesting to a newbie like me. Bought it as libraries throughout SG doesn't have it up for loan yet.
------------------------------------||--------------------------------------------

Can someone tell me where I can find a book which has, for example: Pictures taken by photographers, with the exposure settings, white balance, aperture, f/stop...stuff like that? Something like a whole book filled with photos and settings indicated. Will be a great help to me and others trying to get settings right.

THanks and thanks again in advance
