i think it's a competition with Canon's 70-200 F2.8 IS, which prices was just adjusted this week by 500 bucks!

anyway great for consumers! cheers

Have Sony updated their pricelist for the lens on their site?

Mino Tan, remember what I told you ? .................. :what:

Let them drop some more ...............( I don't own a single Sony lens) ...............

I was in Hongkong last month, I would have to say comparing Sony HK & SG prices ( Lens & Body). It is worth the flight tickets if you are getting the complete system ( Body + Lensssss + Flash + Grip + etc).

Unfortunately they ran out of one of the lens that I was looking for, in the end I did not bought any sony products there... :(

Has the 24-70G also dropped from it's insane original price?

you mean the zeiss 24-70mm?
nope, no change for this lens.

Just want to straighten the information. I spoke with SonyStyle just now.

70-200G is 2,999 - S$ 700 drop, not 1,100 drop as mentioned in earlier
70-300G is 1,199 - S$ 250 drop.

Most other sony lenses above $1,000 like fish eye, drop about S$ 200. While the CZ lenses like 135mm still selling at 2,199 (If I heard correctly).

In conclusion, the price is nearer to HK prices but still significantly expensive. A 135mm in HK would about less than 1,800, while here is 2,199. For a 300-400 dollar difference, this would influence people to buy locally instead of from HK or US out of desperation by huge price gap.

Hope this helps.

It's adjusted to 2599 for CZ24-70. A S$400 cheaper. still S$300 higher than HK price

Sounds like a good thing to do.. Assuming Sony SG was responding to price drops from Canon SG, and assuming Canon SG 's prices are more even across the world.. I am just wondering whether Sony HK would also drop their prices to match Canon HK.. so maybe the gap between Sony SG and Sony HK was reduced, or stayed the same or even increased..:o

wow. this is a great piece of news. other than the above mentioned 2 lenses, which lens dropped price too???

in my memory, most of the lenses price had been revised, beside the above 2 lenses,85mm/1.4 cz also drop. but the actual figure i cant recall.

I really don't think SONY dropped their lens prices to counter Canon's move... it's probably some timeline that they are following and perhaps in relation to the A900's impending release... I don't think there's such a great expectation as for the A900 compared to other brands, save perhaps for the Canon 5D MkII...

actually pardon me, i really have no idea how A900 release will make 70-200 drop in price.

unless there are new models replacing the older ones.. if not usually in business it's competition that drives the prices down.

If not the coincidence on price drop S and C is far too queer.

PS: i tot Canon's move to drop 70-200 is to hold their current camp of user from leaping into N camp since newer N body are kinda more impressive(at the moment)? making C user buying another long zoom keeps them happier in the same camp and hence hold out till the next release? just my guess... :P

Let me be bland and honest here: If S would charge a lot more for lenses and bodies than their main two main rivals that would make their products uncompetive. Hardly a 21st centrury winning strategy. Responding to competition is not a bad thing, is a good thing, it would show that they want to be in, rather than they don't mind being out :)

SONY has seldom really cared about its rivals... it's products have always carried a premium price tag... so I'm holding my breath to have SONY countering rival brands' price initiatives...

My reference to the anticipation for the A900 is not related to the drop in price for the 70-200G... there's likely a replacement for that... what I'm saying is that the A900 is creating a lot of anticipation among Alpha mount users since it has been very long in its gestation just like the Olympus E3.

And as I have pointed out to marios below, I am not holding my breath to have SONY compete with the other brands on price... their strategy has always been to put a premium price on their products, you could simply compare prices of TVs, stereo players, etc... usually for the same feature set, the SONY costs more... that's the way it is... even for simple consumer P&S cameras... SONYs cost more, sometimes a lot more!

:) I know what you mean.. but Sony has been forced to play elsewhere hard ball DS vs PSP.. also PS(x) vs XBox (x) vs Nintendo . True these are different kind of products.. but Sony's memory can't be that weak when it comes to other ventures: Clie, MiniDisc.. good solid products that demised ever achieving their full potential.. Minolta lost the game for whatever reasons, if Sony just buys over and simply raises their price??!!##

Lets do the following as a game:

- Price of a 70-200mm f/2.8
L Lens:
N premium lens:
Sony G lens:

- Price of a FF camera:
C:
N:
S:

(forget about the C is better at high ISOs, S better because of Bionz etc etc etc blah blah)

I really do not track prices to fill the above accurately (to be honest I simply buy what I need and get on with it), so lets fill it up as and when products become available.. Revisit this discussion in a year's / 2 years time..

If you visit dpreview forums, there have been lots of these comparos... bottom line is everywhere, SONY lenses are more expensive than Canon or Nikon lenses... the only difference between regions is the quantum... in US the prices are roughly comparable give or take $100-200, in UK, it's like a few hundred to one thousdand dollars more... in Singapore, it's between $500 to $1000+ more...

But also note that the lenses are often strictly not comparable, so it's only a guide...

In the PS3 / Wii / XBox360, the business model is very different from the other electronic goods... for all other classes of electronic goods, the manufacturer of the goods do not provide content... so they have to earn their bucks from the product... but for the gaming console business, the consumer is locked into the content since they are all proprietary... and so SONY can leverage on that to earn from the content although the gaming division is losing a lot of money from selling the consoles and are not making back that loss from the games fast enough... the XBox 360 has a larger library of games that are also more accessible... so that's really a whack into the SONY strategy... the old strategy of locking in game developers for exclusive titles is soon over... many PS-only games of the past have been ported successively over to the other platforms... so I can see that SONY will have to change tack...

But back to cameras... SONY is still relying on it's old brand name cachet... which works for most regular consumers... the old adage was to shift as many units as possible with thin profits per unit... SONY changed the rules by branding theirs well and turned large number of profits with higher than normal profits... it seems to work even now for the lower end products... and SONY might be trying to change consumer habits for the higher end... no one blinks when buying a Leica Summicron lens... cos of its quality, brand name cachet and target group... SONY is trying for the tier of consumers below the Leica group - well-off, knowledgeable, but suckers for brand name...

I have come to realise that along with the dpreview forums I also need to read:
* http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/
* http://www.dyxum.com/dforum//default.asp (for reviews of Minota lenses and cameras)
* http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/index.asp..

It would seem that that list is getting longer and longer.. but its a good hobby :) Wrgts to the differences in price I now understand mass orders, but it is a weird S pricing strategy to push everyone to buy from HK surely! I thought the whole point of having the anti shake in the body was to reduce the cost of the lenses.. ?? Weird..

Agreed.. Zeiss is better, the rest are just about the same..... NOOOOOOOO.... sorry... my true colours are evident....

Totally agree.. unless of course they stay as a niche market again .. (see below)

As a kido, I grew up in a house of broadcasting equipment, audio stuff etc.. I have full repect for the Sony brand..
The rest of this section become difficult because you are suggesting that S is targetting a cliche market.. It is debatable whether there is space for a cliche manufacturer (see the issues of Contax, Leica etc..). When you mention G, others will say L and with Canon's dominance it is diffcult to imagine a shift worth noting...

But you know, you might be right.. in which case it will become like a Vaio.. you kind of see 1 in every 300 notebooks (a niche expensive item).. their users love it, the rest can't get it... apologies to those hurt by the last comment.. :)

In the USA, the Vaio is dirt cheap. :P
